Europe's first pop-up Shakespeare theatre opens in Yorkpublished at 06:30 British Summer Time 25 June 2018
History is being made in York today with the opening of Europe's first ever pop-up Shakespeare theatre.
Thousands of schoolchildren will get to experience Shakespeare for free at the Rose Theatre, which has been built next to York's ancient Clifford's Tower.
It took less than a month to construct the theatre which is due to be officially opened later today before the first performance, a matinee of Macbeth.
The Bard "would totally recognise it", according to producer James Cundall.
The temporary theatre has been built in a car park in 28 days to a circular design, similar to those erected on Bankside in Shakespeare's day.
