    A crab has had to be "rescued" from Sheffield's Peace Gardens.

    'Karl' the crab was seen enjoying the sunshine in the garden's cascading water feature.

    He was safely extracted from the water and is now under the care of the RSPCA.

    Leeds City Council are carrying out emergency work to the A647 Stanningley Bypass after the road buckled due to the hot weather:

    The southbound carriageways towards Leeds have been closed since 09:30 this morning.

    Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council's executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, said they were doing all they could to get the road repaired before the afternoon rush begins.

    A teenager is in a critical condition after a car he was travelling in as a passenger crashed in a village near Selby.

    The 17-year-old boy is being treated at Leeds General Infirmary, with police appealing for information about the smash.

    No other vehicles were involved in the accident, on Hirst Road in Hirst Courtney, at about 20:15 on Monday, police say.

    Short jail sentences make no difference, a former Yorkshire prison governor has said.

    Veronica Bird, former governor of prisons in Wakefield and Leeds, has spoken out in response to a suggestion that sentences under a year should be axed for all but the most serious crimes.

    She said: "We've got to look at value for money for the taxpayers. If somebody is sent to prison for a short period of time, you're not going to make a difference."

    Justice Minister Rory Stewart has told the Commons Justice Select Committee that community penalties are more effective and he wants to "significantly reduce, if not eliminate" terms of under 12 months.

    Animals at a Sheffield farm were left without water in hot weather earlier this week after someone deliberately pulled apart water pipes for the troughs.

    Staff at Graves Park Animal Farm, near Sheffield, posted on Facebook, external say they've had to increase patrols and checks after the incident on Monday afternoon.

    They've had offers from local plumbers to help fix the damage for free.

    From 16:00 onwards, water troughs for our animals were dismantled and pulled apart on our main path that runs from the car park down to the duck pond. This meant that our animals had their constant supply of water taken from them in this heat!"

  8. Row over homes plan near 'irreplaceable' York peat bogpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 27 June 2018

    About 500 new homes could be built close to a nature reserve in York which has previously been lauded by Sir David Attenborough, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The famous naturalist visited Askham Bog in 2016 (pictured), likening it to a cathedral for conservationists.

    He said building close to the ancient peat bog would be like building next to York Minster and there was a responsibility to look after the "irreplaceable" treasure.

    The land has been in and out of consideration for development for years, but was taken off the table two years ago by city councillors.

    A new bid has now been submitted to City of York Council to put the houses up off Moor Lane in Woodthorpe, along with allotments, a school, and sports facilities.

    Askham Bog is owned by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust which has vowed to fight any development plans.

    The council says any planning application will be considered against both national planning policy and York's new Local Plan, which shows the site as greenbelt.

    Rail passengers in Yorkshire are being advised by a train operator to avoid one of its trains because of the hot weather.

    Customers who are planning to get the 20:30 service from London to Hull, which stops at Selby, are being encouraged to get on a different train instead.

    The hot weather means the train is expected to "experience higher temperatures than usual".

    Anyone who's planning to use it can get on an alternate service and its team will provide free water on board, according to operator Hull Trains.

    A 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the serious sexual assault and attempted murder of a teenager in Leeds at the weekend.

    The attack, which left the 19-year-old victim with serious facial injuries, happened at about 03:00 on Saturday near the footbridge adjacent to Grace Street, by the Inner Ring Road.

    Police describe the attack as "horrific" and a team of specialist officers is providing the victim and her family with support, police say.

    A man found dead in Sheffield yesterday died from stab wounds, police say.

    The victim, who has not been named, was found in a house on Steven Close, Chapeltown, at about 00:30.

    A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

    Formal identification of the victim is expected to take place this afternoon, South Yorkshire Police said.

    Arsonists set fire to a field in Barnsley causing a large blaze, according to fire crews.

    Firefighters were sent to the fire on Crookes Lane near Carlton at about 15:00 on Tuesday.

    The large fire took four hours to extinguish.

    The fire service believes it had been started deliberately.

    Two lambs have been shot dead with an arrow in fields near Richmond, North Yorkshire.

    It's thought they were killed with an arrow fired from a recurve or compound-type bow.

    If businesses vote in favour of the plans, they will pay more in business rates in exchange for improvements to the city centre.

    A similar scheme has recently been launched in Wakefield.

    Liz Murphy, Wakefield BID manager, said it has made businesses more involved in the community.

    "We've now done our third 'Make a Difference' day and we've been doing painting, cleaning graffiti and changing bins round - this was something businesses really wanted to change."

    Filey's fishermen have won a temporary reprieve from changes, which they claim could put them out of business, but are still angling to take the issue to parliament.

    The proposals are designed to protect salmon stocks by shortening the fishing season.

    The government says any changes have now been postponed until at least 2020 to allow a closer look at the evidence.

    Fisherman Rex Harrison said the reprieve would enable them to put more pressure on the government.

    The body of a teenage boy has been pulled from the River Aire in Leeds.

    The 17-year-old was found in water at Cardigan Fields at 01:30 after more than six hours of searching.

    It's unclear how he came to be in the river, police say.
