  1. Sheffield woman's 'locked-in' recovery inspires filmpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    A woman from Sheffield who suffered a severe brain stem stroke and was diagnosed with locked-in syndrome is hoping to raise money for a new feature film about her recovery.

    Locked-in syndrome is a condition where sufferers can think, feel, see and hear, but move absolutely nothing below the eyelids.

    Kate Allatt, 48, from Dore, suffered her stroke in 2010 but has since gone on to make a recovery which saw her walk off her hospital ward and renew her wedding vows (pictured).

    Doctor Allatt says she's worked with families around the world to help them going through something similar.

    Now, a crowdfunding campaign is under way to fund a feature film about her recovery in a bid to inspire doctors and change misconceptions about quality of life.

    Leeds Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington has given a clearer indication as to why the club's head coach Brian McDermott (pictured) has been sacked.

    Hetherington said the club was at a "critical point of the season", with four important games coming up which will decide whether the reigning Super League champions can make it into the play-offs or face a relegation battle.

    He added: "It's crucial we finish as strong as possible. It's fair to say we're disappointed where we find ourselves and with results too...We find ourselves on the back of seven defeats with a team that needs a change in direction."

    Hetherington said he "wasn't optimistic" that things would get better like they did in 2016 and the decision was made to effect a "positive change in direction" for the team.

    A motorbike rider has died after a crash in North Yorkshire at the weekend.

    The collision happened between a car and a bike on the A682 junction with the B6253 near Hellifield.

    A 27-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Police are appearing for witnesses, or anyone who has any dash-cam footage taken in the area at about the time of the collision, to get in touch.

    It goes without saying, but leaving your dog inside a car during the current heatwave isn't smart.

    A Yorkshire MP says he's "very hopeful" funding will be secured soon to improve access for people with disabilities at Yorkshire's oldest railway station.

    Selby railway station, a Grade II listed building, was opened in 1834 for the Leeds and Selby Railway.

    People in the town say the lack of a lift there causes difficulty in reaching platforms and carrying suitcases or pushing prams.

    Nigel Adams, the Conservative MP for Selby and Ainsty, is supporting a campaign to improve the situation, with a petition calling for change so far attracting more than 800 signatures.

    The Conservative MP for Calder Valley is hoping plans for a new station in Elland will bring "much-needed" new investment into the town.

    Craig Whittaker said: "We need some serious investment, like the Piece Hall is having, like the Princess Building and Halifax Railway Station - we need some of that investment in places like Elland."

    There's a chance for people to have their say on the station proposals with drop-in sessions, external taking place later this week.

    Firefighters from South Yorkshire continue to help tackle the moorland blaze on Saddleworth Moor.

    They first went to help over the weekend, with two engines being sent earlier today to continue the effort.

    The South Yorkshire team join numerous firefighting teams from across the country trying to bring the blazes at Saddleworth Moor in Greater Manchester and at Winter Hill in Lancashire under control:

    A 64-year-old cyclist from Leeds is in a critical condition after a collision involving a stretch limo.

    The incident took place on the A19 at South Kilvington in North Yorkshire on Saturday 30 June.

    At the time, the cyclist was taking part in an organised time trial in the area - he was then airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesborough.

    Sunshine and no rain doesn't mean there's a risk of a hosepipe ban, according to Yorkshire Water.

    Reservoirs across Yorkshire may look significantly lower than what we might expect, but suppliers say new technology means they can move water to where it's most needed.

    This means there are no concerns about water levels at present.

    This was the scene earlier when a landmark tower at the site of Britain's last deep mine was demolished:

    The controlled explosion on Tower One at Kellingley Colliery, on the North/West Yorkshire border, followed the first tower being demolished last year.

    Kellingley closed in December 2015.

    Production began at the pit, known locally as "Big K", in April 1965 and at its height employed more than 2,000 workers.

    Following the sacking of Brian McDermott as Leeds Rhinos head coach, the former Bradford Bulls player has given his views.

    During eight seasons at the club, McDermott, 48, won four Grand Finals, two Challenge Cups, a League Leaders' Shield and a World Club Challenge.

    Officers say Gary Steele went missing from Kirkby Fleetham at about 02:40 this morning.

    He's described as 55-years-old with short, grey hair.

    Anyone with information about his whereabouts is being asked to contact police.

    A "firewatch" operation has been launched in the Peak District as the hot and sunny weather continues.

    Staff from the National Park, partner organisations and volunteers are in place at moorland vantage points throughout the National Park to look out for fires.

    It comes as firefighters in Lancashire continue to battle a wildfire which has been raging for five days.

    Sarah Fowler, from the Peak District National Park Authority, says visitors to the area must be extra careful as ground conditions on the moors are extremely dry, presenting a high fire risk:

  18. Leeds crash: Police appeal after naming four victimspublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 2 July 2018

    All four men killed in a crash in Leeds at the weekend were from the Horsforth area, police have revealed.

    Caelan Megson, 21, Brandon Frew, 19, Declan Grove, 19, and Matt Walshaw, 18, were among six occupants of a grey Seat Leon involved in a collision with a grey Seat Alhambra private hire vehicle on the A6120 Leeds Outer Ring Road.

    Two girls, aged 16 and 17, who were passengers in the Leon, were seriously injured.

    Officers say the 16-year-old, who was previously in a critical condition, is now described as "serious but stable".

    The West Yorkshire force is still carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances of the collision and what happened in the time leading up to it.

    A decision on whether to allow asylum seekers to move to a North Yorkshire town is due to be made today.

    Scarborough councillors are deciding on whether the town should accept up to 20 asylum seekers.

    The Conservative-led cabinet declined to make a recommendation when it met earlier in June, leaving it up to the full 50 councillors to decide.

    Fifty asylum seekers could arrive in North Yorkshire over the next two years.

    Each of the county's district councils is being asked to consider taking some of them.

    Scarborough has a population of over 50,000, according to Office of National Statistics figures.
