    A Pankhurst Party will be held in Leeds on Sunday to celebrate one hundred years since women getting the vote.

    Hundreds of parties are taking place around the UK to mark the birthday of Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst.

    The Leeds event starts at 10.30 on the Leeds Town Hall steps in Victoria Square.

    A wreath will also be laid in honour of Emmeline Pankhurst who was born on 14 July, 1858, in Moss Side, Manchester.

    In 1903 she, along with daughters Sylvia and Christabel, founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in a bid to get British women the right to vote.

    National organiser Fleur Butler, said: "We need more women to take part in public life as councillors, school governors, MPs, Assembly Members, Mayors, Police & Crime Commissioners, MSPs and Magistrates.

    "We want women not just to vote but to stand for public office as well.”

    Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts has called on the government to fully reimburse all the costs faced by South Yorkshire Police for helping provide security for Donald Trump's visit to the UK.

    Direct costs are being paid for the US president's visit but Mr Betts says this doesn't include things such as overtime and rest day working rates incurred in the county.

  4. Police hunt for man after quad bike assaultpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

    Police are searching for a York man suspected of assaulting two Police Community Support Officers by driving at them on a quad bike.

    The incident happened in York on Tuesday.

    Lewis Matthew Berkley (pictured) was the first person in York to be the subject of a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).

    The court order prevents Berkley interacting with four named people and trying to disguise his identity with a hood when in public.

    In September 2017 he was released from prison for burglary and theft offences.

    He is described as white with mousey hair and brown eyes and about 5ft 10ins tall.

    Police believe he may currently be in the Clifton area of York and want to hear from anyone who knows anything about his whereabouts.

    More than 134,000 people went to the Great Yorkshire Show this year, according to organisers.

    The three-day event near Harrogate was attended by about 1,000 more people than last year, with organisers saying it was one of their best ever.

  7. Boy, 14, jailed for armed underpass robberiespublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

    A 14-year-old boy has been sent to a Young Offenders Institute for two years after robbing people in a Sheffield underpass with a knife.

    The boy, who can't be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to six counts of robbery, two attempted robberies, and six counts of possession of a bladed article at Sheffield Crown Court this week.

    He stopped people in an underpass near Ecclesall Road and took some of his victims to a nearby Waitrose cash machine to withdraw money.

    Police arrested the boy on Thursday 15 March and found him with an eight-inch knife.

    A group of Kate Bush fans will be 'running up that hill' in Sheffield tomorrow as part of a global homage to the singer.

    South Street Park amphitheatre, overlooking Sheffield railway station, will become a flurry of flailing limbs and flowing gowns as they attempt to recreate the dance moves from her famous Wuthering Heights video.

    The celebrations are being held to mark the 200th birthday of the book's author Emily Brontë, Kate's 60th birthday and the song's 40th anniversary.

    The Sheffield leg is being organised by the Friends of Sheaf Valley Park.

    The group are meeting at 14:00 on Saturday and anyone is welcome to dress up and go along.

    A two car crash is affecting the M18 at the moment with traffic at a standstill on parts of the network.

    Highways England say the crash is northbound between junction one for Bramley and junction two for the A1(M).

  11. Poundworld to close more than 100 storespublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

    Poundworld administrators have announced the closure of 80 more stores, resulting in 1,024 job losses.

    The latest announcement by the company's administrators Deloitte means that a total of 105 of the company's 355 stores are now earmarked for closure.

    Poundworld, which has a number of stores across Yorkshire, went into administration last month after failing to cope with rising costs, fewer shoppers and greater competition.

    Deloitte said talks to sell the remaining parts of the business continue.

    Poundworld was founded in 2004, but the firm can trace its origins back to 1974 and a market stall in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, according to the company's website.

    Chris Edwards, who founded the firm, sold out to TPG for £150m, and later took over at rival Poundstretcher.

    Earlier this month he had a rescue bid for the chain rejected and pulled out of any future deals.

    A cyclist is in hospital with serious injuries after he was in a crash with a lorry near Bradford.

    An ambulance crew alerted police at 08.32 today, who then closed off the A58 Whitehall Road at the junction with the A641 Huddersfield Road near Wyke.

    The rider was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with serious, but not-life threatening, injuries.

    Police said the road is still closed and nearby Lower Wyke Lane was also blocked after a lorry got stuck.

    The RSPCA are appealing for information after two gerbils were found dumped in a plastic box in Sheffield.

    The gerbils, called Longclaw and Needle, were found in a storage box outside student accommodation in Priory Place, Sheffield on Monday 9 July.

    RSPCA Inspector Kim Greaves who collected the gerbils, said it's very sad to see animals abandoned and wants to find out who did it.

    “No matter how many times I come across dumped animals, I still find it incredibly surprising that someone can do this.

    "Unfortunately, we live in a disposable, throwaway society so even though these are sentient beings they are still dumped when their owner decides they no longer want them."

    Luckily, the gerbils have now been rehoused.

    The dive team are searching the seabed, 48 m below the surface, trying to find the Scarborough man who went missing at about 18:55 on Sunday.

    Officers from the Yorkshire and Humberside Underwater Search and Marine Unit say they're going to continue the search next week.

  16. Appeal after four-year-old boy hit by a carpublished at 12:14 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a four-year-old boy was struck by a car in Bradford.

    The accident happened about 14.22 yesterday when a black Volvo S80 was travelling along Beckside Road towards Spencer Road.

    The driver collided with a four-year-old boy, but early inquiries suggest he had run out into the road.

    He was taken to hospital and is said to be in a "serious, but stable condition".

    Officers spoke to the driver of the vehicle at the scene.

    No arrests were made.

    Barnsley residents say Donald Trump should be "greeted with respect" when in the UK, according to American news channel Fox News.

    In an article on their website,, external Fox News say they spoke to residents in the South Yorkshire town about the US President's visit to the UK.

    Speaking to market stall holders, one person says they'd shake his hand if Mr Trump came to Barnsley.

    Amber Rose Roberts congratulated Mr Trump on being strong in the role.

    "You’ve upset some people, but you’ve also really got some of the community together and feel proud to be American,” she told the website.
