    Steelworkers from Rotherham are heading to London today to protest against Donald Trump's tariffs on steel imports from the European Union, which they fear will hurt the town’s industry.

    Unions and local MP's met last month with Embassy staff to express their concerns, and call on the tariffs to be dropped.

    They argue the tariffs will have a negative impact on UK steel-makers.

    The mother and grandmother of 18-year-old Jordan Burling have all been jailed for manslaughter, after Leeds Crown Court heard he weighed under six stone and was covered in bedsores.

    Leeds City Council has launched a full, independent review.

    Bernard Gallagher, a child protection expert from Huddersfield University, says: "You have to ask whether their intervention should have been more assertive and longer term.

    "Another major issue was the fact Jordan Burling was home schooled and was subject to very little scrutiny."

    A Labour MP who was suspended over alleged misogynistic and homophobic comments has resigned from the party.

    Jared O'Mara was suspended in October over a series of online posts and claims he verbally abused a woman.

    He was reinstated on Tuesday with party officials saying he should attend training and be given a formal warning.

    The Sheffield Hallam MP announced his resignation on his website, external, saying he had not been "listened to or been given a fair investigation" by Labour.

    He said he intended to continue as MP for the constituency.

    In the open letter to his constituents, Mr O'Mara apologised for any offence his online comments from 2002 and 2004 had caused, but added: "I didn't commit any crimes, yet I have been made unfairly to feel like a criminal."

    A Labour Party spokesperson said: "We're disappointed Jared has decided to resign from Labour after we won the Sheffield Hallam seat from Nick Clegg and the Lib Dems last year."

    Sheffield’s General Cemetery has been awarded more than £3m of funding to improve facilities and access.

    The project, funded by the National Lottery, is planned to start later this year and will see conservation work carried out, transforming the site into a wildlife and heritage park.

    The council say the General Cemetery has been in decline in recent years and is currently listed on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.

    Leeds is one step closer to being the home to one of the North of England's tallest buildings after blueprints have been backed by city planners, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Councillors on the city plans panel voted through proposals for a 37-storey structure on Wade Lane, provided the developers contribute nearly half a million pounds towards infrastructure improvements.

    The block would rival the city's existing high-rise constructions such as Bridgewater Place and Sky Plaza - and developers hope to start work as early as autumn this year.

    It would be built close to the Merrion Centre and Leeds Arena, and is hoped to house more than 750 students.

    Bradford-based supermarket Morrisons is trialling vending machines at some of its stores to allow shoppers to recycle single-use plastic bottles.

    Customers can deposit a maximum of 20 bottles a day and in return will receive points to be spent in store.

    The machines are being trialled for six months at two branches, one of which is in Skipton, with the supermarket saying it wanted to reduce its impact on the environment.

    The machines will accept all plastic bottles that have a barcode and Morrisons own-branded bottles that do not have one.

    Mum queuing for Build-a-Bear offer

    Build-A-Bear Workshop was offering UK customers a chance to buy any bear, which can cost up to £52, for the price of their child's age.

    At Leeds' White Rose Shopping Centre police were called when queues of "about a mile long" formed.

    The company said the response had been "overwhelming and unprecedented".

    The offer has since been withdrawn over "safety concerns".

    An inquest has opened into the deaths of four men who were killed in a high-speed car crash after leaving a party.

    Caelan Megson, 21, Brandon Frew, 19, Declan Grove, 19, and Matt Walshaw, 18 died at the scene on the Leeds outer ring road when their car collided with a taxi, on 30 June.

    They all came from the Horsforth area of the city.

    The hearing before Senior Coroner Kevin McLoughlin at Wakefield Coroner's Court was opened and adjourned.

    Young people living in North Yorkshire are being warned against arson, after at least seven fires were started deliberately in Harrogate since May.

    North Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are issuing the joint warning and are working together to investigate the fires.

    A bin, car, and several houses have all been set alight over the last two months and officers are still investigating if they're linked.

    A 15-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy have been arrested in connection with the latest fire on 26 June and released under investigation.

  17. Pair jailed after Sheffield man murderedpublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 12 July 2018

    A man and a woman will be in prison for a combined total of 48 years after robbing and killing a Sheffield father last year.

    Bradley Onfroy, 32, and Josie Hollis, 25, were both charged with murder after Jordan Hill was fatally stabbed in the hallway of his flat on Southey Avenue, on 23 March 2017.

    Onfroy, of no fixed abode, was found guilty of murder and robbery by a jury in February this year, following a two week trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

    He has been sentenced to life in prison, to serve a minimum of 33 years for murder, with a sentence of 15 years to run alongside for robbery.

    Hollis, of no fixed abode, was due to stand trial with Onfroy in February, however she entered a guilty plea to manslaughter and robbery at an earlier court hearing in October 2017.

    She has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for manslaughter, with a sentence of 12 years to run concurrently for robbery.

    The 23-year-old victim was targeted when Onfroy and Hollis drove to Jordan's flat with a kitchen knife thinking he might have money or drugs.

    After stabbing Mr Hill, Onfroy then searched the flat looking for money, threatening his girlfriend with the knife.

    Fingerprints and DNA left in their abandoned car linked them to the murder.
