Bernard McGuin is returning to local politics after a two-month suspension, which followed complaints tweets he made in 2014 prior to his election were racist.

The council's Conservative Group leader Councillor David Hall said an internal party investigation had decided Mr McGuin had not breached any rules or intended to give offence, and therefore his suspension was rescinded.

Mr Hall said: "He has accepted that we must be careful when using social media, not to write anything which may unintentionally cause offence and I think that is good advice to everyone."

Mr McGuin, 60, who was elected in 2016 to represent the Almondbury ward, said: "A thing like this is really upsetting.

"I know I'm not a racist - If people thought I was that would be devastating for me."

Two teenage boys were also rescued during the four day operation, details of which have only just been made public.

Detectives from Calderdale CID led the raids last week on eight commercial premises across the district.

The teenagers, both aged 17, were found in two stores.

Neither has any parents or relatives in the UK and it is thought they may have been brought into the country in the back of trucks.

They are being cared for by social services.

Officers questioned 36 members of staff and arrested five on suspicion of being in the UK illegally.

To show the lengths the criminals will go to we found one victim who had been branded to indicate she would forever be the ‘property’ of a particular gang. I would urge residents who use businesses that are cash-only to think twice about where their money is going and what it is funding.”

  6. What's next for MP Jared O'Mara?published at 10:17 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

    Liz Roberts
    Political Reporter, BBC Radio Sheffield

Jared O'Mara has already spent more time being an independent MP than he has a Labour one, so perhaps this has encouraged him to think that he can go it alone.

After all, he says he's "experienced little to make me feel welcome, understood and accepted" in the Labour Party.

But without the Labour machine behind him Parliament will be a lonely place.

No Labour Party colleagues, volunteers, or press office.

Local Labour members who once pounded the streets to campaign for his election, will now be the opposition.

Mr O'Mara is now in a unique position.

Possibly the first autistic MP in history, he also has cerebral palsy, and openly admits to suffering from clinical depression and anxiety.

Questions have been raised about his ability to cope in the job, and whether he can last until 2022.

But should his disabilities and mental health problems preclude him from representing the people of Hallam?

  10. Disabled people 'ignored' in cemetery funding boostpublished at 09:40 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

Campaigners say disabled people have been ignored after a Lotto grant of more than £3m was given to Sheffield's General Cemetery, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Sheffield City Council says the cash will complete major restoration work at the Sharrow site, conserving heritage and improving facilities and access.

Objectors say they are opposed to disabled parking spaces being created in the grounds, and that the cash is a smokescreen as it will not help with ongoing funding problems.

Joy Bullivant, from Save Our Open Green Spaces, said she isn't happy about the news.

"The plans for the new car park are going to block disabled access - it's supposed to be improving disabled access but it won't.

"There's been no consultation and it's being steamrollered through against the wishes of the local heritage community. I was totally ignored, as were a lot of disabled people."

"I really like the General Cemetery but this is a really bad idea.

"It's going to ruin the cemetery."

  15. 'Compromise' agreed over tree felling injunctionpublished at 08:45 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

There's been a compromise over extending an injunction against campaigners fighting tree felling in Sheffield, according to the city council.

The council wanted to extend an injunction which would've prevented protestors entering safety zones around trees being felled for three years.

At a court hearing yesterday, the council agreed the new injunction will last 18 months, until January 2020, not three years and will allow peaceful protest as negotiated.

The judge said defendants were "justified in declining to sign" the original proposal.

More than a dozen campaigners had been written to by the council asking them to sign the injunction or face being taken to court for costs.

Thousands of trees have been felled in Sheffield as part of the council's 25 year £2bn Streets Ahead project.

The council says only trees that are diseased, damaging or dangerous are being removed and they are then replaced with saplings.

But campaigners say many are felled because their roots are in the way of resurfacing methods.

A school is attempting to tackle the issue of forced marriages by urging students to hide spoons in their underwear to trigger metal detectors at airports.

Pupils at the Co-operative Academy in Leeds have been told to hide the cutlery there, if they fear they're being taken overseas to be married.

It will trigger metal detectors at airports, allowing them to raise the alarm with security staff privately.

Harinder Kaur, from the school, said the spoons can "save lives".

She said: "In the six-weeks holidays we know there is no contact between school and the family and families have the opportunity to go abroad, get their child married and come back," she said.

A law making it a criminal offence to force people into marriage came into effect in June 2014.
