    An inquest is due to open today into the deaths of four young men killed in a high speed crash in Leeds.

    Caelan Megson, 21, Brandon Frew, 19, Declan Grove, 19, and Matt Walshaw, 18, died at the scene on the Leeds outer ring road when their car collided with a taxi.

    The men all came from the Horsforth area of the city.

    Two girls, aged 16 and 17, who were also in the car, were seriously injured and taken to hospital.

    The Uber taxi driver, a 42-year-old man from Bradford, was also hurt.

    The mother and grandmother of a Leeds teenager left to "rot to death" are due to be sentenced for his manslaughter today.

    18-year-old Jordan Burling was so emaciated when he died his appearance was compared to that of a World War Two concentration camp victim.

    He went into cardiac arrest in Leeds in 2016, and died weighing less than six stone (37kg).

    His mother and grandmother were found guilty of manslaughter earlier this week.

    His sister will also be sentenced today for causing or allowing a vulnerable adult's death.

    Sheffield will be hit by a second tram strike in the space of four days today.

    Most of the network was brought to a halt on Monday, as drivers and conductors walked out in a dispute over pay.

    A limited service will operate again today, with replacement buses running between 07:00 and 19:00.

  7. Underwater searches for missing Scarborough diverpublished at 06:44 British Summer Time 12 July 2018

    A police underwater team is searching for a diver missing off the Scarborough coast today and tomorrow.

    The 74-year-old man from Scarborough hasn't been seen since Sunday.

    His disappearance two miles off the coast triggered a major rescue operation, involving lifeboat crews and a coastguard helicopter.

    Police say they are continuing to support the man's family.

    A 13-year-old boy has gone missing from Huddersfield.

    Police say they are concerned about Mohammed Zubair.

    He was last seen at 17:30 yesterday on Armitage road in the Birkby area.

    Officers say the teenager is of Asian appearance, 5ft 8in and of medium build.

    Anyone with any information about his whereabouts is asked to contact West Yorkshire Police, external.

  10. Elderly woman disturbs burglar in her bedroompublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    An 87-year-old woman in West Yorkshire woke up in the middle of the night to find a burglar in her bedroom, according to police.

    Detectives say they're "pursuing every possible line of enquiry" to catch him after he broke into her house on Scar Lane in Milnsbridge near Huddersfield at 03:00 yesterday morning.

    The man had searched the downstairs and taken items including the lid to a Wedgewood blue heart-shaped trinket box.

    He escaped before the police arrived.

    Police are looking for a man 6ft to 6ft 2ins tall, broad-chested and wearing a dirty rose pink hoodie.

  12. Blaze devastates family home in Otleypublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    A house in Otley was "completely engulfed" by fire in the early hours of this morning, according to the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS).

    The blaze gutted the house on The Crossways.

    The man inside and his two children were taken to hospital with problems from smoke inhalation after the fire, which happened at about 01:00 this morning.

    A spokesperson for WYFRS said their investigator has been to the house as work begins to established the cause of the fire.

    Nine Barnsley primary schools are facing budgets so small that they might have to form an academy-style federation to stay open, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Primaries in the 'Penistone pyramid', which feed the town's grammar school, are all facing severe financial pressures which will come to a head within the next few years unless their budgets improve.

    Meetings between schools, council education staff and councillors found that sharing resources and expertise might be a cost-saving option.

    It comes after Penistone West ward councillor Dave Griffin asked schools to complete an anonymous survey to see what state they were in.

    "All the respondents were worried or very worried they won't have the finances in three years time to provide a good education for their pupils".

    One school in the area is already operating at a deficit budget, with four expected to plunge into the red next year.

    The search for a 74-year-old diver, who is missing off the North Yorkshire coast, is still ongoing.

    The Scarborough man, who has not been named, was reported missing at about 18:55 on Sunday.

    Officers from the Yorkshire and Humberside Underwater Search and Marine Unit are carrying out preparation dives today ahead of underwater searches due to take place tomorrow and Friday.

  17. Travel update: Fire causes delays on M62published at 17:08 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    A fire at J24 of the eastbound M62 near Ainley Top has caused tailbacks of almost six miles this afternoon.

    The fire is now out, and all lanes have reopened.

    Fire crews are now investigating to find out what caused the fire.

    Fifteen-year-old Alzebeta Daniella Kapurova has been missing for 10 days from Durham and police think she could be in West Yorkshire .

    Alzebeta was last seen at Durham City bus station on 1 July and officers say she has links to Bradford, Leeds and Sunderland.

    She was wearing a light grey Adidas jacket with white stripes down the arms and the Adidas logo on the back.

    A Labour MP has revealed he attempted suicide after he was suspended from his party over a string of misogynistic and homophobic comments he made online.

    Jared O'Mara, who won the Sheffield Hallam seat against Nick Clegg in 2017, was readmitted to the party last week nine months after his suspension.

    He told ITV's Calendar he was "hounded by the press" and that he made three attempts to take his own life.

    He said: "I was just a mess. I was shaking. I was crying. I'll not mince my words. I made three attempts on my life.

    "I was harassed and hounded by the press... I was too scared to go home."
