    The Great Yorkshire Show got off to a memorable start for one couple yesterday.

    Yorkshire farmers, Liz Bailey and Chris Moorhouse, from Emley near Huddersfield, chose the Harrogate showground for their special day.

    Both have been visitors to the show since they first met 25 years ago, and chose the event's 160th year to get married.

    Thousands of people have signed a petition calling for a bank holiday on Monday if England win the World Cup.

    Liam Betson, 26, from Woodseats in Sheffield, set up the petition after losing to Belgium in the group stages.

    Seeing England's potential route to the final he says he thought "why not?"

    More than 200,000 people have signed the petition , externalwhich could be debated in Parliament.

    The final on Sunday will be between France and either England or Croatia, who play tonight.

    People in North Yorkshire will have to pick up an £800,000 bill if they want improved street lighting.

    North Yorkshire County Council has been warned it will have to increase its spending on maintaining them, after inspectors found many were suffering from corrosion and cracking around the bases.

    The council has replaced around 27,000 of its 50,000 street lighting columns since 2005, and is considering investing the money in the next financial year, to carry out repairs and replacements.

    A volunteer police officer who was injured in a protest by far-right demonstrators has thanked the public for their support and is recovering well, according to his colleagues.

    Bloody pictures have been posted on social media of the special constable's injuries, which he sustained as he was policing a demonstration in Leeds city centre on Saturday afternoon.

    West Yorkshire Police say the officer was hit by a bottle and described the incident as "completely unacceptable".

    He had volunteered to work on the hot Saturday afternoon as England played Sweden in the World Cup quarter-final.

    His colleagues with West Yorkshire Police's neighbourhood support team posted:

    "The officer injured on the weekend wants to say thank you for all your messages of support & well wishes.

    "A few more hospital visits booked but he is recovering well."

    West Yorkshire leaders are putting a ban on any extra time at a meeting tonight, so they can get home in time to cheer on England in their World Cup semi-final.

    Kirklees Council have agreed to cut short a full council meeting, which traditionally lasts for three hours or more, to allow elected members to see the game.

    The meeting was originally scheduled to kick-off at 17:30,meaning it would have crashed into the 19:00 start for the World Cup semi-final in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

    Group leaders and the mayor have agreed to get the ball rolling at 16:00 and full time will last no more than 90 minutes.

  6. Report wanted into why bike-sharing scheme quit Sheffieldpublished at 09:03 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    Sheffield's Green Party is calling for the council to investigate why a bike-sharing scheme is quitting the city, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The firm ofo, which operate Sheffield's fleet of over 1,000 yellow scan-and-go dockless bikes, announced last week that they would cease operations in the city to concentrate on other UK markets.

    Green councillor Douglas Johnson says the authority needs to know why the company has failed, so it can look for a replacement scheme.

    "What made it worse in Sheffield than in London, Cambridge, Oxford and Norwich and 250 other cities across the world>

    "Is it theft and criminal damage? Is it hills? Is it the lack of safe and clearly marked cycle lanes? Was the scheme too small? Or too big?"

    Labour has said it will look at other dockless bike schemes to replace ofo.

    Police forces across Yorkshire are reminding fans to enjoy the World Cup "safely and legally" tonight.

    Last Saturday's quarter-final match saw cars and property in parts of the country damaged in the wake of England's 2-0 win over Sweden.

    West Yorkshire Police say they saw an increase of nearly 500 calls on Saturday, compared to the previous weekend.

    The Princess Royal will be the guest of honour at the 160th Great Yorkshire Show later.

    Prince Charles is patron of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, which organises the event in Harrogate.

    The show has received several royal visits over its long history

    Recent visitors include The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh in 2008.

    The Princess Royal last visited in 2010 (pictured above).

    It's predicted more than 100,000 people will have passed through the gates of the showground by the end of tomorrow's final day.

    A man was hit over the head with a gun, had his car stolen and heard gun shots during a car-jacking near Rotherham.

    It happened at about 00:45 on Monday in the car park on Doncaster Road, near Fosters Garden Centre.

    The victim had parked his black Vauxhall Zafira at the bottle bank when he was approached by five men described as wearing balaclavas.

    He was threatened with a gun, hit over the head with it, and then as the victim ran away he heard shots fired.

    He's suffered substantial cuts to his head, police say.

    The government's halted plans for powers and resources to be handed to a single mayor covering the Yorkshire region.

    It says discussions on the issue can't take place until an agreement for South Yorkshire has been fully implemented.

    The Local Government Minister, James Brokenshire, has written to the 18 council leaders who back the One Yorkshire deal.

    He says he won't talk to them until a deal already arranged for South Yorkshire has been fully implemented.

    The problem is Barnsley and Doncaster won't agree to the South Yorkshire deal because they want to join the rest of Yorkshire.

    The 18 council leaders are meeting tomorrow to consider their next moves.

    A single burglary in Harrogate, in which the homeowners disturbed an intruder, has been linked to 50 others.

    Police say offenders forced a hole in the door of a property on Hookstone Road on 1 June.

    Once inside, they were disturbed by the owner's sons and left empty-handed.

    The property owner, who returned shortly afterwards, was approached by a couple who said they'd seen a man run from the house and get into a BMW car, with two other men, and leave in the direction of Leeds Road.

    Officer say they believe the men are linked to burglaries which have taken place at properties in Harrogate, York, Whixley and Scarborough.

    They also think the men are connected to more than 50 burglaries in the Thames Valley and Hampshire areas.

    Police say they want the man and the woman who saw the men leaving the area to contact them.

    Police in Doncaster are asking the public to give their change to charity, not homeless people on the streets, after drugs were seized in the town.

    Dozens of colourful wraps were taken off someone who portrays themself as homeless, police say.

    On Facebook, external, the neighbourhood policing team at Doncaster Central said people should "give your change to charity, not to the drug dealers".

    A Yorkshire college has been forced to issue an apology after an email was sent containing the details of hundreds of potential students and parents.

    Scarborough Sixth Form College issued the email on Monday to parents and carers of this year's new starters.

    It included the names, email addresses and phone numbers of more than 600 potential students and their parents.

    Two hours later the college's Principal, Marcus Towse, sent a follow-up email apologising "unreservedly" for the data breach.

    Parents and students say they're concerned about the safety of some of those named, while the Information Commissioner's Office, external said it would investigate the breach.
