    An empty house in Leeds which was set on fire in the early hours of this morning had also been the target of a shotgun attack last month police have revealed.

    A sofa and a wooden pallet had been set on fire outside the unoccupied house on Ashton Avenue in Harehills at about 03:43.

    A bottle with flammable liquid was found outside the house.

    Officers say they don't think there's any connection to a previous incident where a shotgun was fired at the same house in June, but they are "keeping an open mind".

    No-one was injured.

    Humberside Fire and Rescue have thanked people living near a fire in Hull for their patience, as they got it under control.

    Five fire engines and aerial appliance attended the commercial property fire on Grey Street.

    They are currently still at the site with a structural engineer.

    There are fears the building could collapse.

    A "significant" fire at a building supplier in Leeds which saw nearby residents evacuated and caused damaged to an historic railway could have been started deliberately according to police.

    At its height, 100 firefighters from across West Yorkshire were sent to Jewson on Moor Road in Hunslet in the early hours of yesterday morning.

    West Yorkshire Police say CCTV checks reveal that a man, possibly with others, lit a small fire next to the nearby railway line before 02:30 - when emergency services were alerted to the blaze.

    Middleton Railway is the world's oldest working railway, having opened in 1812.

    West Yorkshire Police say they've now found a teenager missing from Bradford.

    Kieran Blythe has been found safe and well, officers said.

    Officers thanked the public for their assistance.

  7. Replacing tower block cladding to cost £346,000published at 13:24 British Summer Time 16 July 2018

    Sheffield City Council is set to spend £346,000 replacing cladding on a tower block which failed a fire safety inspection in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Last year, the council said a single element of covering on the Hanover tower block on Exeter Drive, Broomhall, failed the inspection.

    After further tests on the material, Sheffield Council claimed they did not contain the same material agreed with a contractor.

    A report to the council's cabinet says there's an urgent need to get the cladding replaced.

    "Government funding may cover the costs of this scheme," the report said.

    "However this has not yet been fully confirmed. In order to allow this work to progress, it will be initially cash-flowed from funds allocated for essential investments."

    Three people have been rescued from the River Ouse in York in the early hours of this morning.

    The fire service was called at 04:18 after police were alerted to the incident via CCTV cameras.

    North Yorkshire Fire Service sent a crew from York and launched the brigade rescue boat.

    They rescued two women and a man from the river close to Ouse Bridge (pictured).

    The three were left in the hands of paramedics for further health checks, the brigade said.

    It's been revealed that health bosses in charge of a shake-up of health services in East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire spent nearly £700,000 on consultancy fees in 2016/17.

    The Humber STP, external is reviewing how Scunthorpe General Hospital and Diana Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby are run.

    They are expected to set out plans for the region in the next few years.

    The plan also includes health services in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

    Health bosses say employing consultants was necessary to fill a staff shortage during the establishment of the partnership.

    Police want to speak to this man after a teenager in Huddersfield was assaulted and robbed of his crutches.

    The 13-year-old boy was on New Hey Road in March when a man went up to him, punched him in the stomach and took his crutches.

    Detectives say the man they want to speak to is about 6ft 2ins tall, muscular and was wearing a black coat and dark blue jeans.

    A teenager, who already has a conviction for making a pipe bomb which was found in his Nazi memorabilia-filled bedroom, has admitted a new terror offence.

    Jack Coulson, 19, from Bradford, was found guilty last year of constructing the explosive device but avoided jail when he was given a youth rehabilitation order.

    On Monday, in a separate prosecution, Coulson admitted an offence of possessing a document or record for terrorist purposes when he appeared at Leeds Crown Court.

    The court heard the document, called The Big Book Of Mischief, contained information of a kind likely to be useful to a person looking to commit an act of terrorism.

    Coulson was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Thursday.

    Coulson was not named in reports of his previous trial, in early 2017, after the court banned his identification because he was 17-years-old at the time.

    That jury heard how the pipe bomb was found in a desk drawer in his Bradford bedroom after police were alerted through suspicious Snapchat messages.

    Prosecutors said one of these messages was a cartoon-like image of a mosque being blown up along with the words: "It's time to enact retribution upon the Muslim filth".

    A cyclist from Sheffield, who was seriously injured two years ago in a crash, is undertaking a coast-to-coast cycle ride to raise money for the Sheffield Hospitals Charity.

    Liam Reid was knocked from his bike and ended up in the Northern General Hospital where he was told he'd require immediate surgery and was at risk of losing his leg.

    The six-and-a-half hour operation saved his leg and just six days after the accident he was able to wheel himself down the aisle to marry his long-term partner.

    Now he's back on his bike and is taking part in a coast-to-coast challenge next month to raise money for the hospital charity to say thank you.

    A biker has been left in a critical condition after a crash in Leeds yesterday.

    It happened in the Cookridge area of the city.

    The motorcyclist and car collided at the junction of Cookridge Lane and Mavis Lane.

    Police say they are looking for witnesses to the crash, which happened at about 12:50, and involved a black KTM motorbike and a blue Mini Cooper.

    Kieran Blythe was last seen at 14:00 in the Little Horton area of the city on Saturday.

    The 16-year-old has red and purple shoulder length hair in dreadlocks and was wearing black trousers and a black coat.

    An investigation is on into what caused a large fire at a disused building in Hull this morning.

    Around 25 firefighters were called to the blaze near Spring Bank.

    People in the area have been advised to close their windows and doors because of the smoke.

    A magistrate has been told to step down by judicial chiefs after "misusing" a disability parking badge.

    Margot Conyers, who heard cases in North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, had been the subject of a complaint to the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office (JCIO).

    A JCIO spokesman said Lord Chancellor David Gauke and Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett had found Miss Conyers' actions to be "incompatible with holding judicial office".

    Miss Conyer was convicted of misusing a disability parking badge, according to the JCIO.

    Police are appealing for urgent help finding Stephen Walker, who went missing from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield yesterday.

    Police say the 46-year-old has a medical condition that needs urgent treatment.

    Stephen is 5ft 10in (1.78m) and of medium build, with a ginger beard.

    He was wearing a baseball cap, red t-shirt, black tracksuit bottoms and a dark top.

    As we told you earlier a river in the Yorkshire Dales has dried up in the heat of the last few days.

    The river Bain leaves Semerwater, a lake at Countersett, and heads in a north-easterly direction towards Bainbridge, where it joins the River Ure.

    At 2.45 miles (3.95km) it's believed to be England's shortest river.

    Neil McNair runs the Low Mill Guest House in Bainbridge, which backs onto the River Bain.

    He says all that remains of the river is "a trickle and a few pools."

    Neil says some of his guests are disappointed at not being able to have tea by the river.

    He say the mill's water wheel has stopped turning too.

    The man who founded Leeds' world famous Caribbean carnival is being honoured today.

    Arthur France will be awarded a doctorate for his contribution to the city by Leeds Beckett University.

    The 82-year-old will join more than 5,000 students who will also graduate today at Leeds Town Hall.

    Mr France founded what's believed to be the oldest event of its kind in Europe in 1967.

    He came to the UK in 1957 from the Caribbean island of Nevis and was made an MBE in 1997 for his community work.

    The three-day carnival takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
