    Organisers of the Hull Marathon are appealing for volunteers to help with this year's event.

    The event relies on a team of volunteers and hundreds are needed for a variety of roles across the fun run, relays and full marathon.

    It takes place on 23 September and no experience is necessary.

  4. Last day of 40mph speed limit on A64published at 12:59 British Summer Time 31 July 2018

    A 40mph speed limit through roadworks on a major route in Yorkshire is to be lifted from tonight.

    The £3.6m project to replace 11 miles of the safety barrier on the A64, between Bramham and York, has been taking place since February.

    Tonight the speed limit, put in place while sections of the safety barrier were removed, will be lifted from both carriageways and drivers will be able to travel at the national speed limit.

    There will continue to be lane closures overnight, between 20:00 and 06:00, until the end of August for the remaining elements of work.

    The average speed cameras will also be removed during the week commencing 13 August, using full overnight closures - until then signs will be put up letting drivers know they are no longer in use.

  5. Man seriously hurt after flagging down 'taxi'published at 12:44 British Summer Time 31 July 2018

    A man is in hospital in a serious condition after he tried to get into a car he thought was a taxi near Wakefield.

    It happened in South Elmsall in the early hours of Sunday as the 32-year-old man flagged down the car on Barnsley Road.

    He was trying to get a taxi, but when the car pulled over and he tried to get in the car was driven off and hit the man, which made him fall and hit his head.

    The man is now in hospital with a head injury and is in a stable but serious condition, say police.

    Traffic seems to be coping well currently.

    Police in Bradford are trying to find the owner of a house after hundreds of cannabis plants were found inside.

    Officers raided the house in Barkerend this morning and found 312 plants growing, but haven't made any arrests yet.

    They are now trying to find out who lives there and who has been tending to the illegal crop.

    Cannabis plants can be worth up to £1,000 each when they are harvested.

  8. Couple's wedding kiss 'fall' tweet goes viral againpublished at 12:00 British Summer Time 31 July 2018

    A Sheffield man whose wedding photos included his sister who'd fallen on the floor at a key point during the ceremony has seen his Tweet go viral for a second time.

    Kevin Ryan, who is from Sheffield and works at one of the city's universities, originally posted the photo three years ago after his very hot wedding in Chicago.

    But he recently Tweeted it again on the anniversary of the nuptials and the post has gone viral, with more than 65,000 people "liking" the photo:

    Marrying his now wife, Jessica Ryan, Mr Ryan said his sister's fall happened at the exact moment he was told, "You may kiss the bride".

    He says: "I knew it would get some giggles but I never expected it to blow up in the way it did."

    East Yorkshire's hospital staff have raised almost £3,000 to buy camp beds so the families of cancer patients can stay near their loved ones.

    Previously, relatives had to sleep on reclining chairs next to their relatives if they wanted to stay overnight.

    Staff held a Disco Fever night to raise £2,800 to pay for camp beds so relatives can rest properly next to the people they love.

    The camp beds will be used on Ward 30 of the Queen’s Centre at Castle Hill Hospital.

    New slates have arrived in Yorkshire as part of roof renovations at a South Yorkshire stately home.

    The pale green slates have come from the same Lake District quarry which originally supplied Wentworth Woodhouse's tiles in the 18th Century.

    The work is part of a £200m effort to help restore the house, which is believed to be the largest private house in the UK, with 250,000 sq ft (23,000 sq m) of floor space.

    Built by the Marquesses of Rockingham between 1725 and 1750, the front of Wentworth Woodhouse is more than 600ft (180m) long. The main house has more than 200 rooms.

    Two young girls from North Yorkshire are hoping to raise money for their local swimming pool by climbing one of the UK's highest mountains.

    Four-year-old Georgia and her three-year-old sister, Sienna, want to raise funds for their local pool in Settle, by tackling Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales.

    The siblings are no stranger to a tough climb though - they've also climbed Pen Y Ghent in the Yorkshire Dales, when they were both just two.

    Police are concerned for the welfare of a teenager who hasn't been seen since Friday.

    Louise Mitchell was last seen at her home in Wrenthorpe, Wakefield, at teatime.

    The 15-year-old was wearing mint-coloured trainers, black leggings and a grey hooded top.

    West Yorkshire Police say they are concerned for her wellbeing.

    A Yorkshire market town is hoping to be crowned the most dog friendly place in Britain.

    Business owners in Malton says most of the town's shops, hotels and cafes, welcome dogs with open arms.

    The town's now hoping for the public's support in a national competition.

    The annual Dog Friendly Awards, external attract thousands of votes from across the country.

    The current title holder is Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire.

    Malton will have to wait to find out if it's become top-dog until 20 October, when this year's winner is announced.

    Beverley racecourse, external is going to stage a series of race-day tea parties for older people who live alone.

    It follows a one-off event held during the course's 1960s theme day in May.

    The course will work alongside the charity Contact the Elderly, external, and the parties will be open to people aged 75 and older who live on their own.

    Hull comedian Lucy Beaumont is running a free summer school for young children in the city.

    The school, which incorporates musical theatre, is running for the next three weeks at the KCOM Lightstream Stadium, external.

    It will culminate in a final show based on The Greatest Showman.

    Parents in East Hull can book a place for their children by contacting the stadium.

    A girls' football team in Sheffield have received funding from an entrepreneur in Essex after their plea for money went viral.

    Crosspool Juniors needed £600 to pay for a new kit for two seasons so sent out a Tweet asking for help.

    It was then picked up by Claire Thompson, who runs Agility Health Tech, 180 miles away.

    Alex Gardener, one of the parents behind the idea, said she was surprised when Claire got in touch offering help.

    "It was just incredible to know this woman was so passionate about girls football that she was prepared to sponsor a team that she had never even seen."

    Thousands of puffins and other seabirds along parts of the Yorkshire coastline are to be given extra protection.

    The Flamborough Head and Filey Coast special protection area is being extended by more than 7,600 hectares (18,800 acres).

    It will give a quarter of a million breeding birds, including gannets, razorbills and puffins a safe space.

    Special protection areas are designated under the European Union's Birds Directive, which requires countries to protect habitats for rare, vulnerable and migratory birds.

    Officials say the EU Withdrawal Bill will make sure environmental rules, including marine protected areas set up under EU Directives, will continue to be protected under UK law.

    Phone boxes in Bradford could become a thing of the past.

    BT's revealed plans to install a series of multi-purpose digital hubs across the city to replace some of them, subject to council approval.

    The InLink boards will allow people to charge their phones, use WiFi and even make phone calls.

    A refugee family are sharing their journey from war-torn Darfur in Western Sudan and then Libya, to freedom and resettlement in Hull, through their art.

    The Dirar family have built a replica of the refugee tent they spent four years living in at a refugee camp in Egypt.

    They've decorated it with their artwork and words.

    Their temporary gallery has been erected in Hull's Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation, external.

    The exhibition called Drawing Time can be seen from 31 August to 2 September.

  20. Watch: Sheffield Wednesday 'vigorously' deny racism claimpublished at 08:18 British Summer Time 31 July 2018

    An allegation that Mansfield captain Krystian Pearce was racially abused in their pre-season friendly against Sheffield Wednesday is being looked into by the Football Association.

    Tuesday's match is already under investigation by the FA after both sides were involved in a mass brawl.

    A Mansfield statement , externalsaid they had reported the incident to Nottinghamshire Police and the FA.

    Wednesday said they "vehemently refuted any form of racist abuse".
