    A man who murdered a fellow hostel resident in a revenge attack after a row about cash and beer has been jailed for life.

    Colin Cadamartriea (pictured), 64, stabbed 31-year-old Jarrad Marsh at a property on Albert Avenue, Hull, on 20 January.

    During a trial at Hull Crown Court, jurors heard the pensioner killed Mr Marsh after the younger man stole his benefits, money and beer.

    Cadamartriea must serve a minimum term of 20 years in prison before he is able to be considered for release.

    Sentencing him, judge Kelson QC described him as a "callous" and "dangerous" man.

  2. Ex-miners to revive century-old tradition on Yorkshire Daypublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 30 July 2018

    Former miners are to revive a rather odd tradition in Leeds this week as they perform what's known as a "Josh Wedding".

    It's all happening at the Lotherton estate on Yorkshire Day - 1 August - and will be led by retired miners carrying banners and memorabilia commemorating people who died down Yorkshire’s pits.

    The Josh Wedding ceremony itself began almost a century ago as a novel way of supporting injured coal workers and saw two miners, one dressed as a bride, the other as a groom, take part in a music hall style wedding service.

    Donations were then collected from guests, the proceeds of which were also used to collect food for the poor.

    The tradition died out when the NHS was created in 1948.

    A teenager who had been missing since last night in Filey has been found "safe and well".

    Eve Cockburn, 16, was last seen walking along the beach at 21:10.

    Police say she's now been located.

  4. Missing girl, 14, 'could be staying in hotel'published at 11:28 British Summer Time 30 July 2018

    Police searching for a missing 14-year-old girl from Sheffield say she could be staying in a hotel nearby.

    Morgan Foster was last seen in the Beighton area of the city last Thursday evening, but police say they're growing increasingly concerned for her welfare.

    She is described as being about 5ft 3ins tall, with brown shoulder-length hair.

    Police are appealing for information to help find her.

  5. 'Bigot' pulls down rainbow flag from police stationpublished at 11:12 British Summer Time 30 July 2018

    Members of an anonymous group pulled down a rainbow flag from outside a police station in East Yorkshire then sent hate mail boasting about what they'd done, it's emerged.

    Humberside Police are investigating after the incident at t Bridlington Police station, with abusive emails sent to the Chief Constable, the Police and Crime Commissioner and the chair of the Hull and East Riding LGBT Forum, Andy Train.

    It was the first time Humberside Police had flown the rainbow flag, a symbol of pride and diversity, from its buildings.

    A group calling themselves Men of Bridlington claimed to have done it.

  6. Police 'concern' for 16-year-old missing from holiday parkpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 30 July 2018

    Police say they are really concerned about a 16-year-old girl who has gone missing in North Yorkshire.

    Officers say Eve Cockburn has been missing from The Bay holiday village in Filey since going for a walk along the beach at about 21:10 yesterday.

    She is described as having a shaven head, blue eyes, fair complexion and is of slim build.

    Anyone who has seen Eve is asked to contact police as a matter of urgency.

    The Bay Filey has issued the following statement: "The Bay Filey can confirm it is assisting the police following one of its guests reportedly missing since Sunday evening.

    "The management team are providing support as needed to the family."

  7. Watch: Dramatic video shows water pipe 'fountain'published at 10:38 British Summer Time 30 July 2018

    The video shows the scene on Woodseats Road in Sheffield at the moment after a water main burst.

    Water was sent about 30 ft into the air on the busy road.

    Work was already taking place in the area, with temporary traffic lights being used.

    Yorkshire Water have been contacted for comment.

    Humberside Police has reassured people living in a part of Hull that the force is doing all it can to remove an illegal encampment.

    Travellers have been staying on Pickering Park in West Hull without permission.

    The force says it's aware that the number of travellers on the site has increased recently.

    Humberside Police say the laws around unlawful encampments on private and publicly-owned land are complex, and Hull City Council are in the legal process to evict the travellers.

    Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Emily Brontë, one of the famous writing sisters from Yorkshire.

    A series of celebratory events are being held at the Brontë Parsonage Museum, external in Haworth, where she lived for much of her life.

    Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte were 19th Century novelists who formed one of the world's most famous literary families.

    Often left alone together in their isolated Haworth home, all three sisters began to write stories at an early age.

    Charlotte's Jane Eyre and Emily's Wuthering Heights are hailed as British classics.

    Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was a huge bestseller.

    Police have praised rescue boat volunteers after they detained a man following a stabbing in York on Sunday.

    Police say the attack on a 47-year-old man happened on Skeldergate, near to the Queens Hotel (pictured), at about 00.10.

    The injured man was taken to hospital by ambulance for emergency treatment.

    His injuries are serious, but are not thought to be life-threatening.

    Officers say the 44-year-old suspect was "bravely detained at the scene by members of the York Rescue Boat," before being taken into custody for questioning.

    The rescue charity patrols the rivers Ouse and Foss in York, and was founded after a series of deaths in the city’s rivers in 2014.

  12. Engineering work means no Sheffield-Derby direct trainspublished at 09:28 British Summer Time 30 July 2018

    There'll be no direct trains between Sheffield and Derby from today, because of major upgrade work.

    A replacement bus service will run from Chesterfield, as the track engineering work is carried out at Derby railway station.

    It also means there'll be just one train an hour from Sheffield, through Chesterfield, to London St Pancras.

    The work's due to last until 7 October.

    Network Rail says passengers will face delays, but they're done everything they can to minimise disruption.

    An East Yorkshire village wants residents to sponsor large poppies to be displayed for Remembrance Day in November.

    Reedness Parish Council, external is asking residents to sponsor poppies, which can then be displayed on lamp posts, garden gates and front doors, as a way of remembering all those who died in the line of duty.

    It costs £10 to sponsor a poppy.

    Look at the size of this lump of ice which fell to the ground in York.

    The ice was one of countless similar huge lumps which descended rapidly in a hail storm in York on Friday.

    If a hailstone is cut open, a layered structure like an onion of clear and opaque ice is sometimes apparent.

    Apparently this type of hailstone falls from deep cumulonimbus clouds, where much of the cloud is full of supercooled water droplets.

    People living in Penistone in South Yorkshire are kicking up a stink, saying the smell coming from a nearby animal rendering plant "smells like death".

    According to residents, the whiff from Bella Vista Farm has been an issue for years, but this summer's hot weather has made the stench worse than ever.

    Catherine, who didn't give her surname, lives nearby:

    "The smell is horrendous and it is causing flies and it is causing maggots, and there are children around here that are being sick. Literally sick.

    "It smells like rotten eggs, like chicken's rotting. It smells like bodies rotting really, it smells like death."

    JG Pears, who run the site, said in a statement that it takes its environmental responsibilities extremely seriously and work very closely with authorities.

    It says the Penistone site provides an essential service to local farmers and meat producers, and that workers strive to make sure activities don't impact on neighbours or the local environment.

    Barnsley Council say investigations are ongoing into complaints from residents, and officers have been to the site to check control measures are in place.

  16. Water shortage shuts part of Leeds Liverpool canalpublished at 08:31 British Summer Time 30 July 2018

    A 55-mile stretch of a canal, that runs from Leeds across the Pennines to the north west, is closing from today because of water shortages.

    Lock gates on the Leeds Liverpool canal, which is England's longest man-made waterway, will be shut to boats on the stretch from Gargrave upwards.

    The closure is likely to last throughout August.

    The closure will prevent boats travelling from Wigan, through Lancashire, and up to Gargrave, near Skipton.

    However, the towpath will stay open.

    An emergency pump has been put into the River Foss in York to provide oxygen for fish in the river.

    The Environment Agency say they've been "working non-stop" since midday on Sunday to rescue fish struggling due to a lack of oxygen.

    An operations team organised a pump to aerate the water yesterday evening.

    They've asked anyone who witnesses fish having problems to contact them.

    The economies of Britain's older industrial towns are "essentially stagnant," according to a new report by York's Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Sheffield Hallam University., external

    The report focused on places once dominated by industries like coal and textiles.

    Bradford, Hull, and Wakefield are among those mentioned as having slower than average job growth and poor pay and conditions.

    The research says over many years Britain’s older industrial towns, which have a population of over 16 million people, have all been hit by major job losses in the industries that once underpinned their economies.

    It states: "The economy of Britain’s older industrial towns is essentially stagnant.

    "Older industrial towns are increasingly becoming dormitories for men and women who work elsewhere."

  20. Derelict homes in Hull get graffiti makeoverpublished at 07:29 British Summer Time 30 July 2018

    Derelict homes in Hull have been sprayed with graffiti in a bid to stop them being targeted by vandals.

    Artists from across the country descended on Preston Road to give the boarded-up properties a makeover.

    The council gave up 10 homes to organisers at the Bankside Gallery.

    It hopes the artwork will deter them from being a target for vandals.

    The properties, which are being replaced by new homes, will be demolished in six months.
