1. Guns fired at two homes in Doncasterpublished at 12:21 British Summer Time 17 August 2018

    An investigation has been launched after a gun was fired at two houses in Doncaster earlier in the week.

    The first shots were fired at about 22:30 on Wednesday at a house on Lindrick Close in Conisbrough. No-one was injured but a window was damaged.

    Then, 10 minutes later, a second shot was fired at a house on Lime Tree Walk, Denaby Main. A Again, an upstairs window was damaged but no-one was injured.

    Officers say the attacks were "targeted", but that their investigations are at an early stage.

    A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of a firearms offence in connection to both incidents and has since been released under investigation.

    Fans of late entertainer Barry Chuckle have arrived in Rotherham from across the country ahead of his funeral at the New York Stadium later.

    Cathy and her 15-year-old son Sam left Oldham at about 07:00 this morning to pay their respects.

    They used to watch the Chuckle Brothers in Scarborough, with Cathy having them as her phone screensaver.

    "I say their 'To me, to you' catchphrase all the time. I work in a school and I say to the kids when we're moving things 'To me, to you, to me to you'."

    The funeral for Barry Chuckle, one half of the comedy duo the Chuckle Brothers, takes place shortly in their hometown of Rotherham.

  4. Police crackdown on unsecured loads in West Yorkshirepublished at 11:53 British Summer Time 17 August 2018

    A pilot project aimed at reducing the number of lorries losing their loads on the roads is being launched by West Yorkshire Police.

    Officers are called out to 750 incidents of debris on the county's roads each year.

    Since May, 90 drivers have been issued with fixed penalty notices.

    Now, police officers are working in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive to reduce the amount of unsafe loads.

    Supt Roger Essell, from West Yorkshire Police, says: "An insecure load can affect a vehicle’s stability and, in severe cases, the load can fall onto the road, endangering other people."

    The funeral of entertainer Barry Chuckle will take place later today, with about 200 invited guests paying tribute to the star.

    The 73-year-old, whose real name was Barry Elliott, starred in ChuckleVision with his brother Paul on the BBC between 1987 and 2009.

    The service will take place at the New York Stadium, the home of Rotherham United, where Barry was an honorary life president.

    Fans are expected to be outside the stadium this afternoon before the 13:00 service.

    The owners of a Hull city centre club have denied they've been pushed out due to gentrification, after announcing they won't be returning to the site after it's been redeveloped.

    Earlier this week it was announced that Fruit wouldn't be coming back to its current building on Humber Street following the refurbishment.

    Dave Mays, the owner of Fruit, says the club's current home "wasn't built for purpose" and describes it as "old, decrepit, full of asbestos".

    Fire crews from across South Yorkshire have tackled a series of "deliberate" fires overnight.

    Elm Lane firefighters were called at 19:20 yesterday to Standish Bank, Sheffield, where they dealt with a fire involving grass and trees.

    Immediately afterwards, they were called to another fire involving more than 20 sq m of grass on Edge Well Drive and then tackled a derelict caravan fire on Algar Drive.

    Firefighters say they were also called to several other fires across South Yorkshire during the course of the evening, most of them thought to have been started deliberately.

    They're asking people with any information about the incidents to contact them and have issued a guide on how to prevent arson, external.

    Plans to build 165 new homes and an 80-bed care home on a former school site in York have been approved.

    The City of York Council wants to build 96 houses, 26 bungalows and 18 flats.

    The application, approved last night, also includes plans for a police station and health centre.

    The plans went through despite objections from deputy leader of the council, Andrew Waller, who fears the site, which is surrounded on all sides by existing housing, would be over-developed.

    Councillor Mark Waters, the only member of the panel to object to the application, described it as "a gross over-development, not in the interests of existing residents."

  13. Community urged to get involved with Sheffield Castle digpublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 17 August 2018

    People in Sheffield are being asked to help excavate the site of the city's former castle.

    Wessex Archaeology, who are leading the dig, say amateur archaeologists will get the chance to pick up a trowel and help uncover ruins from the 11th Century.

    The dig, said to be the first comprehensive survey of the Castlegate site, is part of a £786,000 council scheme to revamp the area.

    They have spaces available , externalin September and October.

    A 90-year-old man has been killed in a car crash in the Yorkshire Dales.

    It happened just after 10:00 yesterday morning on the A65 near Skipton Golf Club.

    Police say two cars were involved, a grey Mazda 3 travelling towards Harrogate and a grey BMW X1 travelling towards Gargrave.

    The driver of the Mazda, a 90-year-old man from the London area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The occupants of the BMW, a 72-year-old man and woman, 69, both from the West Yorkshire area, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

    Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who saw the vehicles prior to the collision, to contact them.

    A playground is Sheffield is celebrating after hundreds of kids spent their summer playing, rather than on computer games or on the streets.

    For the first time, Pitsmoor Adventure Playground is open five-days-a-week, meaning up to 90 children can play on the slides and zip-wire all summer.

    They've also recently received money from South Yorkshire Fire and Service who teach young people about fire safety.

    You probably wouldn't know it unless you've been up on the roof of the White Rose Shopping Centre in Leeds, but it has almost 3,000 solar panels.

    It means the shopping centre has reduced its energy consumption by more than a fifth.

    The shopping outlet is now being held up as an example to other retailers of how they can help the environment and boost profits.

    The building's owners, Lansec, sells surplus power generated by the 4,600 square metres of panels back to the National Grid.

    They also say a 20% reduction in energy costs can represent a net 5% increase in profits.
