Home Office funding of £13m across the UK has been awarded to projects, which support vulnerable children by ensuring they have positive adult role models in their lives.

The money's coming from the government's Trusted Relationships Fund, a scheme which attempts to intervene early if a child is at risk of abusive predators or being drawn into criminality.

    Dr in office

Nimbuscare, a group of GP practices in the city, has been given a contract to deliver extended primary care service hours in areas of central York and Pocklington starting in October.

Dr Russell Saxby, from the My Health Practice in York, welcomed the move, saying: "We know people currently find it difficult to get a face-to-face or telephone appointment at their GP practice, at a time to suit them.

"This new service will give people a better choice of appointment times and more options to speak to a clinician, or even, eventually, have a virtual consultation on their mobile device or computer."

  20. Dogs used in pioneering Yorkshire cancer trialspublished at 08:48 British Summer Time 22 August 2018

In the first trial of its kind in the UK, dogs are being used as part of a research project at hospitals in East Yorkshire to see whether they can detect if someone has cancer.

Medical Detection DogImage source, Medical Detection Dogs

The three-year study uses 2,000 patients to help train dogs to diagnose bowel cancer by sniffing urine samples.

Doctor Claire Guest, from Medical Detection Dogs, said: "If our trial shows dogs can detect colorectal cancer in urine samples, the potential is there for a quick, non-invasive test, which could encourage far higher rates of testing and therefore early diagnosis.

Dogs have previously been used to detect changes in blood glucose levels in Type 1 diabetes patients.

The trial has won the backing of the Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt.

Mr Hunt said: "I think ideas like this sometimes don’t get looked at as quickly as they should, because they sometimes get put in the 'quackery' box.

"One of our jobs as MPs is to question orthodoxies and look at different ways of doing things that possibly the establishment has swept under the carpet."
