    One of Yorkshire's airports has been rated the best in the UK by passengers for the second year running.

    Doncaster Sheffield Airport was praised for short queues and quick baggage reclaim.

    Manchester's Terminal 3 is named among the worst, with visitors facing long lines at security.

    Leeds Bradford Airport is in the bottom 10, while London Luton came last in the Which? survey.

    The poll found people enjoyed travelling through smaller regional airports, rather than major cities.

    It was based on more than 11,000 passenger visits, taking into account everything from queues at bag-drop to the cleanliness of toilets.

    Police have said a two-year-old girl, from Yorkshire, died in a crash which closed the M1 on Wednesday.

    It happened just north of J25, for Nottingham and Derby, shortly after 15:00.

    The young girl was in a car with her family when it was involved in a crash with a lorry.

  3. Crazy contenders compete for cobbled cart race crownpublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 24 August 2018

    It's the time of year in York when teams of brave and ingenious people climb into homemade carts and see who can go fastest down a steep, winding and cobbled hill.

    The vehicle pictured above is just one of the contenders for top spot.

    It's been made by staff and pupils at Scarcroft School in York, who are raising money for the British Heart Foundation by taking part in the Micklegate soapboax challenge.

    The event, on Bank Holiday Monday, is expected to see about 50 teams race carts down the ancient cobbles to raise money for charity.

    Starting from a 5m high ramp (pictured) near Micklegate Bar on the south west corner of the walled city, the carts will shake and vibrate their way down the hill towards the River Ouse.

    And good luck to their "drivers"!

  4. Major grassland blaze in Sheffield was 'deliberate'published at 09:51 British Summer Time 24 August 2018

    Firefighters were forced to battle a "deliberate" grassland fire in Sheffield at 10 separate locations in a bid to get it under control last night.

    Fire crews were called to the fast-growing fire on Stubbinghouse Lane in Grenoside at about 20:30.

    On arrival, they discovered a total of 10 separate seats of fire, according to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

    Two crews spent two hours fighting the blaze, which is being treated as deliberate, before it was brought under control.

  5. Landmark Huddersfield building to be brought back to lifepublished at 09:32 British Summer Time 24 August 2018

    A landmark town centre building in Huddersfield is to be converted into flats after the council agreed to loan money to a property development company.

    Kirklees Council says it'll loan money to help renovate 103 New Street, the former Co-operative building, in Huddersfield town centre.

    The authority hopes that SKA Property will then be able to convert the building into 75 flats.

    The firm has already had planning permission granted for the development.

    The money has come from a £25m property investment fund set up by the council to help bring vacant buildings back into use.

    They stood beside the M1 in South Yorkshire for decades, but 10 years ago they were reduced to rubble in just seven seconds.

    The 250ft tall Tinsley cooling towers were brought down in the middle of the night in a controlled explosion, with thousands of people watching from the car park at nearby Meadowhall.

    A £120m biomass power station now stands in its place, with an art trail also planned to commemorate the landmark towers.

    Plans for a new road and bridge in York to provide access to 2,500 new homes are expected to take a major step forward next week.

    Senior councillors will be asked to agree a route into a planned new 72-hectare building development known as York Central.

    New homes and almost 90,000 Sq m of commercial space are planned for the site behind York railway station, as well as a multi-storey car park, a public square and a park.

  9. Surf clubs in lifeguard out-of-hours rescuespublished at 08:30 British Summer Time 24 August 2018

    Surf lifesaving clubs have carried out more than 50 rescues this year at times when RNLI lifeguards are not on duty.

    Since last year the coastguard has been able to call on qualified surf lifesaving club (SLSC) members who are often on beaches at off-peak times.

    There are now registered patrols at 17 SLSCs in places including North Yorkshire, Cornwall, Devon, Norfolk and Sussex.

    So far in 2018, they have carried out 57 rescues in the mornings and evenings. Lifeguards are usually on duty between 10:00 and 18:00.

    In total this year they have performed 101 rescues, including those during lifeguard hours.

    The scheme started in 2017, when there were 151 rescues by nine registered clubs.

    England Test captain and Yorkshire player Joe Root will play for Sydney Thunder in this winter's Twenty20 Big Bash League in Australia.

    Sheffield-born Root has not played in an overseas T20 competition before and the 27-year-old went unsold in the Indian Premier League auction in January.

    The 2018-19 Big Bash runs from 18 December to 17 February.

    The England and Wales Cricket Board has cleared Root and Jos Buttler to play in the first half of the tournament as it falls between winter tours to Sri Lanka and West Indies.

  11. Police appeal over Sheffield sex assaults on elderly womenpublished at 07:54 British Summer Time 24 August 2018

    Police in Sheffield are appealing for information after a series of sexual assaults on elderly women.

    They've all happened in Walkley in the last three weeks and involve a man tricking his way into people's homes by pretending to be from the council.

    On two occasions women were sexually assaulted while another saw cash being stolen.

    One man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault while four other men have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary.

    Det Supt Una Jennings said: "These incidents are incredibly serious and I know how hard it has been for these brave women to come forward."

    There could be more victims and police are keen to hear from them, adds Det Supt Jennings.

    Police are warning festivalgoers of the dangers of selling and taking drugs at this weekend's Leeds Festival.

    It comes after a BBC investigation found a number of posts online offering advice and information on how to smuggle drugs into the site at Bramham Park.

    West Yorkshire Police say security checks will be tight and officers will take a tough stance on drug use.

    A father whose son killed himself 48 hours after mental health nurses in Sheffield determined he wasn't a suicide risk is calling for lessons to be learned.

    Andrew Bellerby, 35, who was receiving treatment for anxiety and depression in July 2015, was taken to the Northern General by ambulance after a pharmacist raised concerns for him,

    It was decided he wasn't at risk of suicide and he was allowed home. He took his own life two days later.

    Prior to his death, Mr Bellerby had made a number of attempts on his life, including cutting his wrists, and threatened to jump from a fifth-floor window, his father, Richard Bellerby, has told the BBC.

    Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Northern General Hospital, has offered its "sincere condolences" to Mr Bellerby's family and say it's taken steps to improve care.

    The trust has admitted some failings in care, but denies liability for his death.

  16. Leeds Mers patient being treated in hospitalpublished at 06:30 British Summer Time 24 August 2018

    A patient is being treated for the potentially deadly virus Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers) after attending hospital in West Yorkshire, Public Health England (PHE) said.

    PHE would not confirm the person's gender but said it was just the fifth case of Mers occurring in England.

    The patient is a resident of the Middle East, where they are believed to have contracted the infection.

    They took themselves to hospital in Leeds before being transferred to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

    The individual was admitted to the tropical and infectious diseases unit on Wednesday evening.

    PHE said the patient travelled on Saudi Arabian Airlines flight (number SV123) from Jeddah to Manchester on 16 August.
