  2. Man arrested for sexual assaults on elderly womenpublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 23 August 2018

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of committing a series of sexual assaults on elderly women.

    The arrested man is believed to have tricked his way into the women's homes.

    The assaults took place on 7 and 21 August in Walkley, Sheffield.

    Four men have also been arrested on suspicion of burglary.

    Det Supt Una Jennings said “These incidents are incredibly serious and I know how hard it has been for these brave women to come forward.

    "With this in mind, I’m conscious there could be more incidents and more victims whom we are not aware of."

    Ahead of the Black Music Festival in Leeds this weekend, BBC Radio Leeds will be broadcasting a special programme - presented by former Leeds United footballer Sanchez Payne (pictured).

    Between 19:00 and 22:00 tonight, The Black Music Festival Takeover will showcase some of the acts performing in the festival and feature reggae, rap, soul and RnB music.

    The Black Music Festival is Europe's biggest free open-air reggae concert and runs to compliment the city's West Indian Carnival.

    The untold story of some of the survivors of the Yorkshire Ripper attacks will be heard for the first time in a new BBC documentary to be broadcast in 2019.

    Made for BBC Four, the series will look at the infamous case, particularly if attitudes towards women and prostitutes at the time influenced the police investigation.

    Peter Sutcliffe, from Bingley near Bradford, is serving 20 life sentences for murdering 13 women, and trying to kill a further seven.

    The multi-million pound makeover of one of Europe's oldest concert halls, St George's in Bradford, is underway.

    The first acts for the venue have already been booked for January 2019.

    The bells will ring out over Ripon later, as the city's cathedral commemorates people who died during World War One.

    The full peal of bells will mark the centenary of one death in particular - that of Ripon bell ringer William Thorpe.

    Pte Thorpe, of the Grenadier Guards, was killed in action during the second battle of the Somme on 23 August 1918.

    Police in Dewsbury are hunting a driver who failed to stop after hitting and seriously injuring a man earlier today.

    The injured man was found lying in Huddersfield Road at Ravensthorpe and remains in a serious condition in hospital.

    Police are appealing for anyone who might have seen the incident to contact them.

    A patient is being treated for the virus Middle East respiratory syndrome (Mers), Public Health England (PHE) said.

    The person, whose gender has not been confirmed by PHE, admitted themselves to hospital in Leeds before being transferred to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

    The patient is a resident of the Middle East, where they are believed to have contracted the infection.

    This is the fifth case of MERS diagnosed in England, with previous cases diagnosed in 2012 to 2013.

    People without symptoms are not considered infectious but, as a precaution, those who have been in close proximity will be contacted and monitored, PHE said.

    The first Mers fatality was recorded in June 2012 in Saudi Arabia.

    According to the World Health Organization, there have been 2,229 confirmed cases of Mers in 27 countries since September 2012 and 791 associated deaths.

    Poet's Society - ridden by Frankie Dettori - won a handicap chase at York to give the Scot his 4,194th victory.

    The 20-1 shot has taken Johnston, 58, past the mark set by Richard Hannon Sr, who retired in 2013.

    Johnston, who is based in the North Yorkshire village of Middleham, trained his first winner in 1987 and his victories have earned £53m in prize money.

    More than 90,000 concert goers have turned out for shows at Scarborough's Open Air Theatre this summer, organisers have said.

    Following on from the likes of Gary Barlow and Noel Gallagher, Britney Spears performed at Europe’s largest open air theatre on Friday, before indie legends, James, brought the season to a close on Saturday night.

    Promoters Cuffe and Taylor say they're already working on next year’s line-up which they promise will bring more of music’s top names to the Yorkshire Coast.

    A man has died in a fire at a flat in Bridlington.

    The blaze broke out on the top-floor of the property in Wellington Road on Wednesday evening.

    Police said firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 19:30 and the blaze was an isolated incident.

    An investigation has started into the cause of the fire and the man's death, which detectives are treating as unexplained.

    A much-loved member of his community and a former Wakefield councillor has died aged 87, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Colin Peaker, who lived his whole life in Wakefield, worked as a barber for almost half a century - he also served on the old city council between 1964 and 1974.

    In retirement, he became known as Britain's oldest paperboy, delivering newspapers for Preens Newsagents on Savile Street for 25 years.

    He was still rising at 04:00 each morning to set off on his rounds until his retirement a few weeks ago.

    Speaking after his 85th birthday in 2016, he said: "I said I was just going to do the job for a month and see if I liked it. Now it's 23 years later."

    Bradford has been named as one of the most affordable places to rent a home in the UK.

    Researchers found other places including Hull, Durham and Dudley were also among the cheapest in the country.

    Jobs website Adzuna compared average advertised salaries with average rental figures in towns and cities across the UK.

    The results were used to compile lists of the most and least affordable places for renters to live.

    On the second anniversary of the murder of a man from Bradford, police are again appealing for help in finding his killer.

    Beyake Keita Ann was 21 when he was assaulted in Attock Park, Laisterdyke, in August 2016.

    He was playing football with friends in the park when he was approached by a group of males who attacked him and one of his friends.

    Following his death, police launched a murder investigation which led to the arrest of more than 20 males. A number of suspects remain on bail.

    Det Ch Insp Ian Scott says: "There is a possibility that circumstances may have changed in the last two years and that those who felt they were not in a position to speak previously can do so now.

    "If this applies to you, please come forward and speak with my team. You may have that vital piece of information which will help us to solve this case and provide Beyake's family some closure."

  18. Oldest rescue seal at Yorkshire sealife centre diespublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 23 August 2018

    The oldest seal at the Sealife Scarborough centre has died at the grand old age of 29.

    Bruno had lived at the centre since 1989 when he was rescued to be rehabilitated, but an outbreak in the wild of Phocine distemper virus meant he couldn't be released.

    Lyndsey Crawford-Darwell, head of animal care, said: "Bruno was a huge part of our family. Both the whole team and myself are very upset, but are finding comfort knowing we gave him a wonderful home.

    "Bruno developed a strong bond with one of our other residents, Mando, after he arrived.

    "Mando was supposed to move away, but when move time came, Bruno was so determined not to have his best mate taken away he lay between us and Mando."

    Bruno leaves behind his other pool-mates, Pendle, Herbie and Ed.

    It's thought Bruno died from kidney issues which are common in older harbour seals.
