The competition watchdog has begun a formal investigation into the proposed takeover of Leeds-based Asda by Sainsbury's.
The new company would be the largest in the country - in terms of its share of the market.
The supermarkets said, external the merger would mean a fall in grocery prices both chains.
However, some experts have said at least 70 shops might have to be sold.
The Competition and Markets Authority, external will now look into the plans.

A 26-year-old prison officer has appeared in court charged with bringing drugs in to a Doncaster prison.
Victoria Sked, of Station Road, Stainforth, was arrested after police were called to HMP Lindholme on Monday following a report of a prison officer attempting to take drugs into the prison.
A number of items, including mobile phones and suspected drugs, were found following a search.
She was charged with two counts of conveying a prohibited article into/out of prison, possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of Class B, the acquiring/use/possession of criminal property and conveying a prohibited article into a prison intending it to go to a prisoner.
She appeared at Doncaster Magistrates' Court yesterday and will appear at Sheffield Crown Court next month.

A chimney stack which has towered above land near Brighouse since 1992 is due to be demolished later.
The chimney, off Cooper Bridge Road next to the River Calder, is part of the old sewage sludge incinerator which Yorkshire Water is replacing with a brand new £57m digester.
It was damaged during the 2015 Boxing Day Floods, meaning sludge had to be transported off site to be treated elsewhere.
The new digester will turn human waste into electricity which will feed into the national grid to power homes in Calderdale and Kirklees.

A wallaby which has gone missing from Filey on the North Yorkshire coast may have travelled up to 100 miles away, it's being claimed.
The marsupial disappeared from Filey's Bird Garden and Animal Park only hours after arriving there on Monday.
Yesterday, the park said there had been two potential sightings - one near Gristhorpe Roundabout and one at the top of Folkton Brow.

A 22-year-old man from Wakefield has been charged with helping a man accused of knifing a pensioner to death in her own home in South Yorkshire
The body of Jill Hibberd, 73, was found with multiple stab wounds at a house in Roy Kilner Road in Wombwell, near Barnsley, on 31 May.
Andrew Ashby, 22, of Woolgreaves Avenue, Wakefield has been charged with assisting an offender in connection with her death.
He was bailed to appear at Barnsley Magistrates' Court on 12 September.
Lee Trevor Fueloep, 40, of Willow Garth in Wombwell, was previously charged with murder, theft and burglary and is currently on remand.
