The UK drinks industry relies on people drinking to harmful levels to generate most of its revenue, according to new research done at the University of Sheffield.
That creates a conflict of interest if alcohol companies continues to be involved in helping the government form policies on safe drinking, researchers claim.
The work, by the university's Alcohol Research Group, has found that people drinking more than 14 units a week account for just 25%of the population - but they provide 68% of revenue for the drinks industry.
Research Fellow Colin Angus says it's not in the industry's interest to see sales fall if people only drink the recommended amount:
The Portman Group, the alcohol industry's self-regulatory marketing body, said: "In the last decade, binge drinking has fallen by nearly a quarter and alcohol-related violence, drink-driving casualties and acceptance of drinking among children have also fallen significantly.
"Drinks producers have contributed to this decline through their commitment to encouraging moderation through the development of a wide range of low and no-alcohol products," it adds.
