    A memorial ornamental mushroom has been stolen from Scarborough crematorium.

    It was one of three recently installed there, so that memorial messages can be engraved on it, and was taken during the early hours of Sunday.

    CCTV footage shows a car entering the neighbouring cemetery grounds.

    The council said: "One person gets out of the car, pulls the smallest memorial from the ground, puts it in the car and makes off in the car."

    Councillor Bill Chatt, from Scarborough Borough Council, said: “The speed of the theft suggests this was a targeted crime, with the perpetrators knowing exactly what they wanted to take and where to locate it."

    Anyone with information about the stolen memorial is being urged to contact the police.

    New strike dates which could affect Yorkshire rail travellers have been announced by the RMT union.

    Staff working on Northern trains will stage 24-hour walkouts on three more Saturdays in September.

    The union had already announced strikes for this Saturday, and the following two Saturdays.

    Action will now also take place on the 15, 22, and 29 of the month.

    It's part of the long-running row over driver-only operation.

    There are no "suspicious circumstances" surrounding the death of a man who was found injured in York this morning, according to police.

    The man was found by members of the public outside Tesco in Piccadilly at about 04:30.

    He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, police say.

    Officers are in the process of contacting the man's next of kin.

    Kirkstall Abbey has been granted an events and alcohol licence despite fears from locals that it could turn the historic site into a "theme park", according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Leeds City Council, who run the abbey and its grounds, have been given year-round permission to stage plays, organised dancing, film exhibitions and play music between 07:00 and 23:00.

    Alcohol can now also be served there every day between 11:00 and 00:00.

    Despite objections from neighbours of the 900 year-old monastery, including one from a resident who said living close to it would become "unbearable", councillors approved the application.

    Council bosses have defended spending over £30,000 on a car to transport ceremonial mayors around Doncaster since 2015, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    Figures published by the TaxPayers' Alliance show the council spent around £23,000 on a Skoda Superb SE L Executive car, along with £1,066 per year on maintenance, £1,266 every year for fuel and £560 on insurance.

    Doncaster ranked the fifth highest spending authority across Yorkshire & Humber, with Hull coming top with a £94,000 spend.

    Barnsley was the highest in South Yorkshire - shelling out £58,000 maintaining a BMW 3 Series and a Skoda Superb, while Rotherham spent £44,000 on a Audi A8 and a Volvo S80.

    Sheffield Council spent £9,900 maintaining their 2009 plate Jaguar Sovereign SJ.

    Out of 420 councils asked, 166 hadn't spent a penny on a mayoral car while 47 local authorities didn't respond when asked.

    Doncaster Council said they bought the car at a competitive price and aim to keep running costs as low as possible.

    A man who fatally stabbed a young father in the heart in an apparent revenge attack in Sheffield has been jailed for 27 years.

    Khalid Mokadeh, 22, stabbed Sami Al-Saroori, 31, on 9 September 2017 outside a flat in Wensley Gardens, Burngreave.

    Mr Al-Saroori died at hospital in the early hours of the following day as a result of a 15cm-deep knife wound that pierced his chest bone and penetrated his heart.

    Mokadeh, of The Oval, Sheffield, denied murder but was found guilty of manslaughter after a trial.

    He also pleaded guilty to two counts of wounding with intent and three charges of possession of a bladed article.

    The court heard Mokadeh believed Mr Al-Saroori had ordered a shooting in June of the same year in which he, Mokadeh, was shot in the leg with a sawn- off shotgun.

    A mock medieval castle built by a tourist attraction in the Yorkshire Dales is "harmful" and "obtrusive" government planners have said.

    The 32ft (10m) structure at the Forbidden Corner, near Leyburn, was built without planning consent.

    The Planning Inspectorate rejected an appeal against the Dales authority's demolition notice but gave both sides nine months to come to a compromise.

    The Forbidden Corner said it was "saddened" by the decision.

    A 30-year-old man has been arrested following reports of people fighting at a property in Leeds this morning.

    No-one was there when officers arrived, but they found blood and damage to the property on Charlton Road, East End Park.

    A man was later arrested at an address on Nickleby Road.

    He has been taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not life-threatening.

    A 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, affray and possession of a bladed weapon, following an incident in a Sheffield car park yesterday.

    The man had been seen carrying a knife close to the Homebase store on Chesterfield Road in the Woodseats area.

    When officers arrived at the scene, the man ran at them and they used a taser to detain and arrest him.

    Ch Supt Stuart Barton, District Commander for Sheffield, said: "I’m extremely proud of the officers involved in this incident who ran towards danger, putting the safety of others before themselves."

    People are bidding today to own a piece of York's history.

    Historic stone removed from York Minster during conservation work is being auctioned-off in Dean's Park behind the Minster to raise funds for maintenance work.

    It features lots ranging from 14th Century stones to Victorian pieces and includes grotesques, finials and 10 lots which formed an 18th Century pinnacle.

    If you've got a bit of spare cash then you might end up with stone which once formed the pinnacle of the second largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe.

    The auction started at noon and is part of a celebration of the ancient craft of stonemasonry at the cathedral.

    Police are appealing for information after two men were injured in an "unprovoked attack" in a Barnsley chicken restaurant.

    It happened at about 18:30 on Saturday 24 June, following England's World Cup win against Panama.

    It's thought the two men pictured above assaulted another man, injuring him.

    A bystander was also attacked and injured after he tried to intervene in the KFC on Peel Street.

    A beauty contest entrant has created a dress covered in discarded plastic bottles, including some found on a beach in her home town.

    Millie Margetts, 21, who is currently Miss South Yorkshire and a former Miss Grimsby, made the outfit using hundreds of bottles for the "Eco Round" of the Miss England competition.

    She said she wanted to highlight plastic pollution and was inspired to create the dress after seeing the bottles on Cleethorpes beach.

    "It's turned out to be amazing. I feel a sense of achievement," she said.

    "We have such an issue all over the world with plastic pollution, it's all you ever see everywhere you go.

    "I wanted to make the outfit bright and out there so it stands out when trying to put the message across," she added.

    For those not old enough to get the "chat show hosts" reference, it relates to TV entertainer Rod Hull, who caused chaos on chat show legend Michael Parkinson's programme when his emu puppet attacked the talk show host.
