    A woman from South Yorkshire called 999 to report "an unusual slug in her garden", according to police.

    The unnamed woman rang the emergency line, with South Yorkshire Police saying inappropriate calls are commonplace.

    The force says the "frankly wacky" calls included complaints about takeaway deliveries not arriving.

    Chief Constable Stephen Watson says those kinds of calls are slowing response times to genuine emergencies.

    A mural has been unveiled at Hull's multi-million pound new arena, featuring key landmarks and famous faces from the city.

    The Bonus Arena was officially opened last week with a performance by Van Morrision.

    The new mural inside the venue was created by local artist Joseph Cox.

    It has around 250 references to Hull including iconic buildings and references to famous names like Phillip Larkin, Mick Ronson from the Spiders from Mars, and the pop star Calum Scott.

    A cyclist has been left with serious injuries after a hit-and-run crash in Wakefield.

    The 22-year-old cyclist was hit by a blue car, possibly a Vauxhaull, as he rode under the railway bridge on Balne Lane at about 15:40 on Sunday.

    The car was then driven off without stopping.

    The cyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

    Anyone who saw what happened, including people with dashcam footage, are being urged to to get in touch with police.

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of child cruelty offences after police were called to a "disturbance" in Sheffield.

    Concerned members of the public made several calls to the police after a disturbance involving a 42-year-old man at Leighton Road in Gleadless.

    It happened at around 05:50 on Sunday.

    He's been released on bail as enquiries continue.

    A man who stopped and rescued a woman who was being seriously sexually assaulted in Leeds this morning is being sought by police.

    The woman, who is in her 50s, was walking to work on Bristol Street at about 06:15 when the attack took place near the derelict New Roscoe pub.

    A passer-by who intervened causing the suspect ran off walked the victim away from the scene and called the police.

    He left the scene without giving his details and officers are keen to speak to him as a witness.

    The attacker is described as black, aged 35 to 40, slim build, with short dark hair.

    Work to improve a dangerous junction near Beverley is due to start next week.

    There have been four serious crashes at the Meaux Lane junction, on the A1035 between Leven and Beverley, in the last three years.

    About £150,000 will be spent on installing a right turn lane as well as a stopping point for cyclists and pedestrians to cross the road, according to East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

    The work is expected to start on Monday 10 September and will take eight weeks to complete, the council says.

  9. York pop-up theatre 'hopes to return next year'published at 14:39 British Summer Time 3 September 2018

    The company behind a pop-up replica of a Shakespearean theatre in York say it's been a "phenomenal success" and are talking to the council about doing it next year.

    Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Richard the Third have all been performed at the Rose Theatre near Clifford's Tower over the summer.

    James Cundall, who is from Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, says he wants it to come back again.

    "Next year, I know it's no secret that we are talking to the council [about doing it again].

    "I think there is a desire for it to come back."

    A huge spout of water has been gushing from the ground in Barnsley this morning.

    It happened on Grange Lane earlier today and led to some people being left with low water pressure or no water at all.

    Yorkshire Water said their teams are on site fixing the leak.

    A man has been charged with three counts of rape after a series of attacks in Doncaster town centre.

    Anthony Dorey, 25, of Howville Road, Hatfield Woodhouse, appeared before Doncaster Magistrates’ Court earlier charged with three counts of rape over the past two years.

    The charges to relate to three separate occasions between 2016 and 2018 in Doncaster, involving adult women.

    The latest attack is said to have happened on Sunday 2 September, when police received a report that a woman in her 20s had been raped after a night out in Doncaster town centre.

    He has been remanded in custody to appear before Sheffield Crown Court on 1 October 2018.

    Wayne Woods has been missing since yesterday and police say they are "very concerned" for his welfare.

    The 35-year-old was last seen in Lupset at about 19:00 on Sunday and officers have since been out searching the area.

    Mr Woods was wearing blue jeans, black Nike Trainers, a white Nike baseball cap, grey T shirt, and a navy blue jumper.

    The body of a man has been found on the site of a former Homebase store in York.

    The discovery was made near Foss Islands Road at about 06:30 this morning.

    Police believe the man, in his 40s, had been working at the ex-Homebase site, which is now being redeveloped.

    Officers say: "Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident. At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained."

    Anyone with information about the man's death is being asked to contact police.

    A teenager is in hospital in a critical condition after he was assaulted in Keighley at the weekend.

    The 19-year-old man suffered serious injuries in the attack on Dalton Lane, which police say happened at about 15:55 on Saturday.

    A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack and he has since been released under investigation.

    Those who carried out the attack were in a black car, similar to a VW Golf, and are asking for witnesses to come forward, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    A motorcyclist who was seriously injured in a crash near Bempton yesterday has died in hospital.

    The 29-year-old man was airlifted to hospital following a crash on the B1229 between Buckton and Bempton on the East and North Yorkshire border yesterday afternoon.

    Another man who was a passenger on the bike suffered minor injuries.

    Fish have been rescued from several rivers around Yorkshire as water levels begin to drop dangerously low.

    In the last week, the Environment Agency says it's had to carry out a number of fish rescues from rivers.

    Those include the River Rye in Helmsley, where more than 1,000 fish were rescued.

    Species included brown trout, grayling, bullhead, stone loach, minnow, lamprey and native crayfish were caught and moved to another location.
