Thousands spent by council in tree protests legal costspublished at 12:13 British Summer Time 3 September 2018
More than £400,000 has been spent on legal costs associated with Sheffield's Streets Ahead contract which has seen street trees felled across the city.
Thousands of trees have been cut down by contractor Amey under the council's tree-felling and replacement contract since 2012.
Campaigners have staged a series of protests in a bid to stop them being cut down.
Sheffield City Council insists trees earmarked for felling were diseased, dying, dangerous or damaging.
But campaigners argue many of the felled trees were healthy and have staged a series of protests in a bid to stop them being cut down.
A Freedom of Information request by BBC Radio Sheffield has shown more than £400,000 has been spent on court costs, with the council saying it will try to get some of it back through reclaiming court costs.
