    More than £400,000 has been spent on legal costs associated with Sheffield's Streets Ahead contract which has seen street trees felled across the city.

    Thousands of trees have been cut down by contractor Amey under the council's tree-felling and replacement contract since 2012.

    Campaigners have staged a series of protests in a bid to stop them being cut down.

    Sheffield City Council insists trees earmarked for felling were diseased, dying, dangerous or damaging.

    But campaigners argue many of the felled trees were healthy and have staged a series of protests in a bid to stop them being cut down.

    A Freedom of Information request by BBC Radio Sheffield has shown more than £400,000 has been spent on court costs, with the council saying it will try to get some of it back through reclaiming court costs.

    A 27-year-old woman has died after a car crash in Bradford at the weekend.

    The woman was driving a silver Audi A4 on Swain House Road at about 06:10 on Saturday when the car hit a kerb and then a tree.

    New aerial footage shows the scale of a fire at the former ski village in Sheffield.

    Plumes of smoke were seen from across the city yesterday afternoon as firefighters tackled the grassland blaze.

    South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue say they were called to the scene at about 14:40 and left five hours later.

    The following video, filmed from a drone by Maximum Altitude shows just how big the fire was.

    Key legislation behind HS2 coming to Leeds and Manchester is thought to have been delayed by 12 months, it has been reported.

    Transport Secretary Chris Grayling announced last summer that the tabling of a bill in Parliament for phase 2b - running from Crewe to Manchester, and Birmingham to Leeds - would take place next year.

    But the Government is preparing to pause this until 2020, according to The Times.

    The DfT would not confirm the delay, but issued a statement which said: "Phase 2b of the railway will connect the great cities of the North to boost jobs, housing and economic growth, and remains on track to open in 2033.

    "We will update Parliament as part of our consultation this autumn."

    Music fans in Huddersfield are in for a treat this week as a conference on the music scene, including a keynote speech from the man behind Metallica, Red Hot Chilli Peppers (pictured) and Adele, hits town.

    The three-day Cross Town Traffic festival at the University of Huddersfield features hip hop, heavy metal, punk and electronic dance music.

    Hundreds of scholars of rock and pop from around the world are expected to convene at the University of Huddersfield for the event which runs until Thursday.

    Legendary producer and Grammy award winning Andrew Scheps will give one of the keynote lectures.

    A ferret and her six-week-old baby have been found dumped in a box in Hull.

    The RSPCA say they were called in after the ferrets were found in a wooden box on Portobello Street on Tuesday 28 August.

    The ferrets, who have been named Jessie and Layla, are being looked after by the charity.

    The RSPCA is appealing for information on who their owner could be.

    A man has been arrested after a stolen van was used to ram into a police vehicle in Sheffield.

    The driver reverse-rammed a police car before he "legged it", according to police.

    He was later found by a police dog.

    He was arrested for failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and drink-driving.

    The van was on false plates, having been stolen from Sheffield in July, police added.

  10. Plaque honouring 'first modern lesbian' to be changedpublished at 11:02 British Summer Time 3 September 2018

    The wording on a plaque in York commemorating a 19th Century diarist, external often referred to as "the first modern lesbian" is to be changed after thousands of complaints.

    The rainbow plaque at Holy Trinity Church on Goodramgate in York currently describes Anne Lister as "gender-nonconforming" rather than lesbian.

    It celebrates Anne Lister's "marital commitment" to Ann Walker in 1834.

    Lister was born in Halifax in 1791 and is known for her coded diaries which tell the story of her life and lesbian relationships.

    Following a meeting of York Civic Trust, the Churches Conservation Trust, York LGBT Forum and York LGBT History Month, it has been agreed the wording will be changed.

    A consultation will now be held with historians and experts on the works of Anne Lister and the proposed new wording will be shared for public feedback before being finalised.

    The new plaque should be in place by spring next year, according to York Civic Trust.

    An urgent appeal for families to talk about organ donation is being made, after it was revealed 168 people from across Yorkshire and the Humber region have died while waiting for a transplant in the last five years.

    At the start of Organ Donation Week, the NHS is calling for more people to let their family know their wishes if they want to be a donor.

    In Yorkshire and the Humber, 70% of families agreed to donate their loved one’s organs for life-saving transplants last year, compared to a UK average of 66% - the third highest consent rate in England.

    Anthony Clarkson, interim director of organ donation for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "It's tragic so many people have died waiting for a transplant.

    "People are dying every day because some families are not talking about donation."

    Nationally, about three people in need of an organ die every day.

    A power cut has left hundreds of properties in Hull and Dunswell, near Beverley, without electricity this morning.

    It was caused by an unexpected problem with the cables or equipment that serve the area, according to Northern Powergrid.

    Engineers are working to have the power restored by about 11:30, the firm says.

    About 370 properties are affected.

    A man has been charged with murder after a man was battered to death with a baseball bat in Batley on Friday.

    The 31-year-old victim suffered fatal head injuries in the attack in Town Street.

    Police have described the assault as an "isolated incident".

    Ibrahim Mahetar, 35, of School Crescent, Batley, has been charged with murder and assault, police say.

    He's due to appear before magistrates later.

    Witnesses are being asked by police to come forward after two people were seriously injured and their car was destroyed in a crash on the M18 at the weekend, police say.

    The three-vehicle crash happened near junction one at Bramley at about 09:25 on Saturday morning.

    A 33-year-old man suffered cuts and bruises, and the passenger, a 64-year-old woman, suffered injuries to her chest, shoulders and spine.

    Stranded motorists verbally abused officers and some drove the wrong way up the hard shoulder to get out of queuing traffic at the scene, South Yorkshire Police said.

    Motorway cameras are being checked and people could face prosecution as a result, police add.

    A motorcyclist been airlifted to hospital after a crash near Bempton on the border between North and East Yorkshire.

    It happened on the A1229 just before 15:00 yesterday afternoon and police say the 29-year-old rider was left with life-threatening injuries.

    The bike passenger was also taken to hospital.

  18. Electric trains on Calder Valley rail route 'a priority'published at 09:10 British Summer Time 3 September 2018

    A campaign to electrify a railway line in West Yorkshire is expected to intensify today.

    Calls to upgrade the Calder Valley line, which links Halifax with Bradford and Leeds, are due to be discussed by senior decision makers later.

    Calderdale Council's cabinet will be told improvements are "absolutely essential" and the authority should start lobbying the government to speed up the process.

    Electric trains accelerate faster than their diesel equivalents and would allow for shorter journey times, according to a report by a group of cross-party MPs, external to advise on rail investment.

    Calderdale Council leader Tim Swift says the government has acknowledged the line's modernisation is vital.

    Mr Swift says: "Electrifying the Calder Valley line is a top priority for the north."

    Police are trying to find a group of youths who attacked a man in Bridlington.

    The man was punched in the face and chased down Brett Street on Saturday evening, according to Humberside Police.

    They are asking anyone who saw what happened to come forward.
