    A father-of-two with advanced Motor Neurone Disease has abseiled more than 100ft underground.

    Jason Liversidge, 42, from Rise near Hull, said the descent into Lancaster Hole in the Yorkshire Dales was his wife Liz's idea, and he is not a fan of small spaces.

    Offenders could be used to tidy up and carry out maintenance in Withernsea.

    The town council will be asked to agree to the scheme at a special meeting this evening.

    They'll be asked to sign up to the Town SMART programme, which is designed to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour through a number of strategies.

    A mechanism would also be introduced to make sure antisocial neighbours were dealt with swiftly.

    A group of New Age travellers, who live on land at Sheffield's former ski village, are expected to go before the courts today as part of an ongoing eviction hearing.

    There are big plans to redevelop and reopen the site at Parkwood Springs as an extreme sports venue.

    The scheme is supported by Sheffield City Council.

    Twenty-nine people living below the former site on Vale Road were issued with an eviction notice in January.

    Sheffield Ski Village opened in the 1990s, but has been derelict since a fire in 2012.

    The travellers have lived there for more than 10 years.

    Rotherham's first dedicated centre offering degree courses could have a big impact on the town's economy, according to the director of the new site.

    The University Centre Rotherham opened two weeks ago.

    It offers degree courses accredited by Sheffield Hallam University and The University of Hull.

    Director Jana Checkley says Rotherham is a great area for the new centre.

    "This is absolutely what it needs and it's giving the community what it deserves.

    "I love Rotherham, it gives back to the community that has already given us so much."

  7. Search for Leeds man with 'significant head injuries'published at 09:16 British Summer Time 8 October 2018

    Police are trying to locate a man who sustained a suspected head injury after being hit by a taxi in Leeds.

    It happened in the early hours of Sunday morning on Dewsbury Road, according to police.

    The man left the scene after being hit by the vehicle.

    A helicopter was deployed to look for him but failed to find him.

    The man, thought to be in his 20s, is described as a white male, 5ft 8ins, with brown hair.

    It's thought he walked along Dewsbury Road towards Leeds city centre after being hit.

    Officers say they want to trace him urgently to ensure he's not badly injured.

    New rapid charging points for electric vehicles could be installed across a West Yorkshire city under new plans.

    Councillors in Wakefield are looking at putting almost £400,000 towards a new network.

    They hope it will encourage residents and businesses to consider switching to electric vehicles.

    The government wants the majority of cars on our roads to be electric by 2040.

    It has already outlined plans to put charging points into new streetlights.

  11. Police harassment warning to Father Ted writerpublished at 08:15 British Summer Time 8 October 2018

    The co-creator of Father Ted has been given a verbal warning by police for alleged harassment following a row on Twitter with a transgender woman.

    Graham Linehan was told by West Yorkshire Police not to contact Stephanie Hayden.

    She reported him for referring to her as a "he", and for tweeting the names she used before transitioning.

    Miss Hayden, 45, is now suing the writer.

    Mr Linehan, 50, told the BBC he is also considering taking action against her.

    Children in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire are some of the first in the world to join a pioneering medical trial to correct spinal deformities.

    A man has died after he was stabbed in a street in Sheffield two weeks ago.

    The 31-year-old was one of two men stabbed in Walkley Lane, Hillsborough, just after midnight on 23 September.

    He was taken to hospital and died on Sunday morning, South Yorkshire Police said.

    The second man, a 29-year-old, was taken to hospital but released shortly afterwards.

    A 24-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder.

    Regulators are investigating the actions of Boots after the death of a great-grandfather from Doncaster who was sent duplicate packs of prescription drugs.

    Richard "Tony" Lee (pictured) took a week of extra pills dispensed in error shortly before his death in December 2016.

    The General Pharmaceutical Council, which regulates pharmacies, said it was investigating his daughter's complaint.

    Boots said "extremely rare circumstances" led to the error and apologised to the family.

    Mr Lee, 84, was supposed to be sent four 108-pill, weekly packs each month to control heart, kidney and anxiety conditions.

    But after his death, his daughter Gail Pickles found double the expected number of packs, along with evidence he had taken the double dose.

    A man has been stabbed in broad daylight outside a betting shop in Leeds.

    Police were called to the scene outside the Coral shop on Compton Road in Harehills just before 14:00 yesterday.

    The man was taken to hospital for treatment.

    His condition is not known.

    West Yorkshire Police said the area has been cordoned off and officers remain at the scene.
