York Balloon Fiesta blamed for traffic 'gridlock'published at 09:17 British Summer Time 1 October 2018
A hot-air balloon festival in York has been blamed for causing gridlock in the city centre at the weekend.
Some buses were running more than an hour late due to too many cars trying to get to the Balloon Fiesta on the Knavesmire racecourse, according to City of York Council.
The council wrote on Twitter there were "severe delays" on roads heading towards the racecourse and bus company First York reported "major delays" on all services.
First York said on social media that traffic resulting from the Balloon Fiesta had "brought York Centre to gridlock", with most services running about 60 minutes late.
The balloon festival organisers said they were "victims of their own success" and they would improve traffic management next year if the event is staged in the city again.
It's thought more than 30,000 people attended the event, which saw 50 balloons taking off from the city centre location.
