Mike Procter, the chief executive of the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Earlier this week, the York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust transferred support staff to a subsidiary company, something described by the Unite Union as a step towards privatisation.

Ladywood Primary School, in Grimethorpe, South Yorkshire, has proposed that teaching assistants would supervise meals to save cash.

It wants to make all nine school meals supervisory assistant roles redundant which has resulted in six days of strikes by Unison union members.

The school did not want to comment on the escalation of strike action.

But a Barnsley Council spokesperson said "no viable proposals" had been put forward by the unions at a meeting on Wednesday.

Teaching assistants and support staff at the school were also taking action short of a strike by not covering the dinner ladies' work, the union said.

Jordan Stapleton, area organiser with the Unison union, said: "We have a lot of support from parents and we hope that the school sees sense.

"It's going to have a disruptive effect which is regretable but if these proposals go ahead then the disruption is going to be permanent and really severe for the children in Grimethorpe."

Head teacher Clare Grainger previously said it was "facing a significant budget shortfall for 2019-2020".

The school had to review its staffing and "this is a difficult time for those involved", she said.

Millions more in funding has been promised by the government, but so far the money has not materialised.

Mr Corbyn, while on a visit to the city, said the government should "cough up" as they had pledged to do.

The Boxing Day floods brought by Storm Eva in 2015 damaged more than 700 businesses and nearly 3,000 homes, mainly in the Kirkstall area of Leeds.

A cross-party delegation of eight local MPs and council leaders will meet the floods minister later this month.

They will ask for £47m, which they say is lacking, to protect the city from future flooding.

    Quote Message

Unless the government now funds the next stage of flood protection for Leeds then there are going to be problems ahead."

Leeds Crown Court heard how the gang approached victims in Slovakia, including a father who had a family of 11 living in a single room, and said they could get them a better life in the UK.

The victims were bought over, had their bank accounts taken out of their control and were given run-down accommodation to live in.

One woman gave evidence to say she could see how hungry the children of her neighbours were so she fed and clothed them, but the gang's children had new clothes, and the women had jewellery, the court heard.
