  4. Alarm not raised soon enough over body parts - MPpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 5 October 2018

The government confirmed the waste had not been properly disposed of by Healthcare Environmental Services.

A spokeswoman said there was no risk to the public, but the waste material had not been incinerated in a timely fashion.

One of the affected sites is in Normanton, near Wakefield, in the constituency of Labour MP Yvette Cooper.

Ms Cooper said: "If it's serious enough to have a criminal investigation, if it's also serious enough to go to a Cobra meeting, yet there was no statement to Parliament."

"There was no statement to the public, no statement to the local community. I just don't think that is fair."

The BBC has contacted Healthcare Environmental Services for comment.

  6. Hull Fair-goers warned to stay safe and securepublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 5 October 2018

Visitors to Hull Fair have been warned by police to leave any valuables such as tablets, jewellery and credit cards at home.

    The police at Hull Fair

Humberside Police have issued 10 "crime prevention tips" for the estimated 450,000 people expected to attend the fair between today and Saturday 13 October.

Members of the public have been encouraged to park in well-lit areas, not leave valuables in the car and wipe sat nav marks from their windscreens.

Alcohol on buses to the fair, which is held on Walton Street, is banned and anyone caught caught drinking will be asked to get off.

Ch Insp James Glansfield said: "Hull Fair is a family event and there's no place for anti-social behaviour.

"If anyone does commit crime or act in an anti-social way, they can expect to be dealt with firmly so that they don’t affect anyone else’s enjoyment."

  7. Listen: 'Engage with youngsters' - Knife crime appealpublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 5 October 2018

More people need to be exposed to the reality of growing up in poor areas, according to the man behind a conference in Huddersfield focusing on how to stop young people getting involved knife crime.

Youth leaders are set to meet council workers and police in the town later to look at how they can stop people joining gangs.

Social media use and a lack of positive role models are also on the agenda at the conference at the University of Huddersfield, which is trying to bring together groups to tackle social issues.

Conference organiser Howard Belafonte, from outreach group Conflict Resolutions, says engaging with youngsters in their own environment gives a better picture of the issues they face:

    Police cordonImage source, PA

Asbestos was discovered during a search of the premises at the junction of Dewsbury Road and Oakhurst Avenue in Beeston last week, police say.

A number of cannabis plants were removed for destruction before the asbestos was identified at the site and the scene was sealed off.

Officers wearing protective suits and using other protective equipment are due to carry out a "comprehensive" search of the building later.

Det Insp Phil Jackson says: "We want to make people aware of what is happening at these premises to avoid any unhelpful speculation or unnecessary concern in the community.

"The potential risk from asbestos is only within the building itself and there is no need for anyone in the area to be unduly concerned."

The pictures were taken in 1917 by 16-year-old Elsie Wright and her nine-year-old cousin, Frances Griffiths, in the village of Cottingley, near Bingley.

The hoax fooled many people including Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

  17. Primary school dinner ladies go on permanent strikepublished at 07:39 British Summer Time 5 October 2018

Dinner ladies at a school in South Yorkshire are now on strike indefinitely after talks between their union, Barnsley Council and the school broke down.

    Dinner ladies

Ladywood Primary School, in Grimethorpe, has proposed that teaching assistants would supervise meals to save cash.

It wants to make all nine school meals supervisory assistant roles redundant, which has so far resulted in six days of strikes by Unison union members.

The school did not want to comment on the escalation of strike action.

But a Barnsley Council spokesperson said "no viable proposals" had been put forward by the unions at a meeting on Wednesday.

Head teacher Clare Grainger previously said it was "facing a significant budget shortfall for 2019-2020".

The school had to review its staffing and "this is a difficult time for those involved", she said.

  18. Human body parts stockpiled in West Yorkshirepublished at 07:27 British Summer Time 5 October 2018

A criminal investigation's been launched by the Environment Agency into the build-up of hundreds of tonnes of medical waste, including body parts, being held at several sites including one in West Yorkshire.

    Waste lorry

It emerged yesterday that a contractor working for NHS hospitals had been failing to dispose of the waste within the proper time-frames at five sites in England, including one in Normanton, near Wakefield.

A spokeswoman said there was no risk to the public, but the waste material had not been incinerated in a timely fashion.

The anatomical waste is stored on sites in secure and refrigerated containers.

The BBC has contacted Healthcare Environmental Services for comment.

The Health Service Journal, which first reported the story, is reporting the company is blaming a lack of "incineration capacity in the market" and desire to reduce use of landfill.

The statement given to the journal said all waste companies have been affected and the firm had been "consistently" highlighting these issues to regulators.

  19. Report reveals pluses and minuses of Yorkshire devolutionpublished at 07:14 British Summer Time 5 October 2018

    John Henry
    BBC News, Yorkshire

Yorkshire-wide devolution could boost the region's economy by billions of pounds but have little effect on improving road, air and rail transport, according to a leaked economic report.

    Yorkshire flag

The document, commissioned on behalf of 18 Yorkshire councils, was tasked with looking at what benefits devolution could bring.

The Yorkshire economy could be boosted by up to £30bn in the coming years, it claims.

But it adds there's not an "all or nothing case" supporting devolution and some issues would be better dealt with at city region level while others would work better on a north-wide basis.

The paper, produced by consultancy firm Steer Economic Development, says: "There are potentially considerable advantages from devolution to the Yorkshire level.

"These are often higher-level economic functions such as innovation, exports and international business, high-level skills and public transport ticketing."

Port of HullImage source, Associated British Ports

The 122-page report says Yorkshire-wide devolution would be good for the Humber ports such as the Port of Hull (pictured), but the Leeds-Bradford and Doncaster-Sheffield airports would not be a priority for a Yorkshire-wide devolution.

Any devolution would be unlikely to bring additional benefits to rail travel or offer major changes to road transport, it adds.

The government has refused to discuss the so-called One Yorkshire plan until a deal in South Yorkshire is completed - leading to calls for other parts of the county to do their own smaller deals.
