The relationship came about to promote peace following World War Two - the idea being that if people were friends they were less likely to go to war again.

It was formed with two twinning ceremonies, one held in France in October 1968 and the other at Leeds Civic Hall the following April.

Although the relationship started in 1968, the Leeds-Lille links go back to the immediate post-war years.

School links started with France through pupils writing to pen pals in Lille which gradually developed into a city relationship.

Pictures of dancing pixies were mocked up in 1917 by 16-year-old Elsie Wright and her nine-year-old cousin Frances Griffiths in the village of Cottingley, near Bingley.

The girls borrowed Elsie's father's camera, and used coloured paper cut-outs and hat pins to stage their scenes near the stream at the end of Elsie's garden.

The pictures found their way to keen spiritualist Conan Doyle, of Sherlock Holmes fame, who was writing a magazine story on fairy life.

Following the publication of his article a great public controversy raged, with leading scientists and writers voicing their opinions in support of and against the truthfulness of the photographs.

Elsie and Frances only confessed the photographs had been faked in 1983.

Dominic Winter Auctioneers expects the two images to fetch over £2,000.

  13. 'Second-rate service' replaces town's minor injuries unitpublished at 08:55 British Summer Time 4 October 2018

Campaigners in Withernsea claim the seaside town's minor injuries unit has been replaced by a "second rate service".

A sign saying minor injuries unit

The town's former unit, which used to be visited by about 10 people a day, closed six months ago to make way for a new eight-to-eight centre.

Now, fewer than one person a day gets seen there, and local resident have said they're growing concerned they could end up losing it all together.

Roger Read, chair of Withernsea and District Health forum, said: "Second-rate service, simple as that. It's quite difficult to get a referral here and that means the service is being under-utilised."

Health managers say the priority in Withernsea is for planned care so there are more clinics for treatments such as physiotherapy and podiatry.

Jane Hawkard, chief officer of East Riding Clinical Commissioning Group, said: "We think we've done a good job, it's very difficult to provide services across our geography.

"Equally, we've got to balance the needs for the population of Withernsea and actually their needs are not in urgent treatment."

    David Burns
Hull City Reporter, BBC Radio Humberside

Last night it emerged that a consortium which could include former chairman Paul Duffen may be close to a takeover of Hull City.

    Paul Duffen

Duffen is the name that won't go away in the pursuit of Hull City, I've been saying that for a while now, and I'm told he's backed by mainly Saudi Arabian money.

It appears to me, having had quite a lot of conversations with various people, that somebody is doing due diligence on the club and there is a possibility that a deal might be close.

But you never know with these deals. We've seen it before when we've thought we've got close on deals and they've not happened...
