Up to 125 bee sculptures were placed around Manchester and about 75 will be sold on 17 October.

At a city council meeting, councillors were told the local authority had received a "sound 'no'" from former Communities Secretary Sajid Javid, after the authority asked for financial support.

A total of £10m is being spent on placing sprinklers in every one of the city's 116 tower blocks, which the council will pay for in full.

The Department for Communities and Local Government has yet to respond to a request for comment.

Meanwhile, emergency services were praised for their response to a tower block fire in Cottingley on Monday (pictured) in which no-one was injured.

  20. Historic clock stops tickingpublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

A timepiece which solved a centuries old seafaring puzzle has stopped ticking at its home in Leeds.

The Harrison Clock, invented by world famous Yorkshire clockmaker John Harrison and his brother, in 1727, solved the problem of how to calculate longitude while at sea.

    ClockImage source, Leeds City Council

In 1714 the British government offered £20,000, the equivalent of around £3m today, for anyone who could come up with a way of accurately determining longitude.

Not being able to do that had caused numerous ships to get shipwrecked, costing shipping companies a fortune in lost lives and cargo.

However, age appears to have finally wearied the precision of the 291-year-old timepiece which is housed in Leeds City Museum - the 18th Century marine chronometer has stopped ticking.

The clock also played its part in the space race, at a dinner at 10 Downing Street, Neil Armstrong toasted John Harrison, saying his invention enabled men to explore the earth, which gave them the courage to voyage to the Moon.

Matthew Read, Director of the Bowes Centre for Art, Craft and Design visited Leeds today to try and diagnose the problem.

It's hoped Matthew will come up with a treatment proposal to get the clock working again.
