Plans to close York's main post office are a "backwards step," according to the Communication Workers Union.

The Post Office has confirmed it wants to move it into a city centre branch of WHSmith and says there will be a six-week consultation on the proposals.

Post Offices in Beverley, Harrogate, Northallerton, Scarborough and Selby could also be relocated.

The Crown Post Office, based at 22 Lendal, was built in 1884 and is one of the last surviving Victorian purpose-built post offices still in use today.

David Bowmaker from the union, which represents some post office staff, says for somewhere like York to not have a Crown Post Office is "mind blowing":

A statement from the Post Office says: "We propose to franchise up to 40 branches to WHSmith (York is one of the branches), but this is subject to consultation."

  8. Baby 'choked to death' in poorly designed cotpublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

A seven-month-old baby choked to death in his cot due to the gross negligence of the designer of the bed, a jury has been told.

    Craig Williams

Leeds Crown Court heard that Oscar Abbey was found by his parents, caught in the side of his bed at their home in York.

Craig Williams, the owner of the company which sold the bed to Charlie and Shannon Abbey, went on trial accused of gross negligence manslaughter.

John Elvidge QC, prosecuting, said Oscar died in 2016 of positional asphyxia after becoming stuck in the bed.

"In effect, he choked to death. He was starved of oxygen," he said.

Mr Elvidge said he died because the cot bed bought by his parents from the defendant's company "was designed and constructed without any care or thought for the safety of the child".

Mr Williams, of Park View Road, Kimberworth, Rotherham, denies manslaughter and fraud.

    The trial continues.

    Meeting

A meeting with local health groups took place today and more are planned.

  16. Footballer hangs up her boots to focus on firefightingpublished at 14:57 British Summer Time 15 October 2018

A full-time firefighter has had to quit playing football for Sheffield United Women, because she says there's not enough money in the game to allow her to play it professionally.

    Nicola HobbsImage source, Getty Images

Nicola Hobbs joined Sheffield United earlier this season, but has had to stop playing for the team as that and her full-time job made it too demanding.

As Sheffield United Women can't pay full-time wages, it means many players also work other jobs.

Speaking to the BBC, the goalkeeper says she'd need to be offered about £35,000 a year to make it worthwhile leaving her job as a firefighter with South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

She said it was the "hardest decision" she'd ever had to make.

"Because the game is growing, it's becoming too 'professional' for me to be able to commit to," she said.

"We're the wrong generation to make it full-time."

Provisional results from the summer show 70% of Bradford pupils achieved the expected standard in reading for Key Stage 2, up from 66% last year and 57% the year before.

It is a vast improvement for the district, which has been identified as an area of the country where children are severely lagging behind in reading skills.

Despite the improvements, Bradford still lags slightly behind the national average for the expected standard in reading.
