    The sea might be quite a few miles away from Harrogate (60 miles to be exact), but the town's set to see some of the ocean's greatest creatures this weekend.

    A record-breaking 6.2 metre-long baby Minke Whale, a Great White shark and octopus are set to 'swim' into the town at the weekend.

    Using the plastination process, to preserve biological tissue, made famous by Dr Gunther von Hagen the exhibition at the Harrogate Convention Centre, features 50 life-size creatures.

    Police are looking for this man after conmen tricked their way into a 73-year-old Doncaster woman's house and then stole jewellery and cash.

    Two men knocked on the lady's house in Wheatley last Thursday at about 19:30.

    They told her they needed to check the water in her home, with one of them asking her to watch the tap in the kitchen.

    The other man went upstairs to check the taps in her bathroom.

    The 73-year-old found that jewellery and cash were missing after they left her home.

    People westbound on the M62 this afternoon face a very slow journey, there are more than 20 miles of queues and stop-start traffic.

    West Yorkshire Police say there's no particular reason for the delay.

    Traffic is either moving slowly or stopped from J29 at Wakefield to J23 at Huddersfield.

    There are also reports of 50 minute delays in Leeds.

  6. Flood warning issued along Yorkshire coastpublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 26 October 2018

    Flood warnings have been issued for part of the Yorkshire coast tomorrow morning.

    The Environment Agency says strong to gale force winds combined with high tides will create large waves at high-tide in the morning, with over-topping likely.

    A flood warning is in place for Hornsea.

    The agency says the flood gates allowing access to the beach at Hornsea have been closed.

    High tide is between 06:00 and 08:00 tomorrow morning.

    Flood alerts are also in place along the North and East Yorkshire coast and for the Humber Estuary.

    A man who is already serving a life sentence, for the abduction and murder of a teenager in Leeds in 2000, has been given a whole life tariff for a series of sex attacks.

    John Taylor, 62 is already serving a life sentence for the abduction and murder of 16-year-old Leanne Tiernan 18 years ago.

    The judge heard he had conducted a 20-year campaign of "rape and sexual assaults against children and women, fuelled by a sadistic desire to inflict pain for sexual gratification."

    Taylor appeared on video link at Leeds Crown Court as prosecutors spent two hours outlining the details of his assaults, including one on a terrified seven-year-old girl.

    They also heard of another attack which was witnessed by his pregnant victim's three small children.

    He showed no emotion as Judge Robin Mairs told him there was "no doubt that you must be kept in prison for the rest of your life".

    John Taylor, 62, who was jailed for murder of Leanne Tiernan in 2000, has been sentenced to life in prison for a series of sex attacks involving five further victims between 1977 and 1966.

    The youngest victim was aged seven.

    North Yorkshire Police have released images of a man they want to speak to following a sexual assault in Sowerby.

    The incident occurred in an alleyway between Sowerby Road and Topcliffe Road, Sowerby, at about 15:10 on Saturday 13 October.

    A woman, who had crossed Sowerby Road and started to walk down an alleyway, was approached by a man.

    The pair struggled and the woman shouted for help and then managed to escape from her attacker.

    Police are asking for anyone who might recognise the man in the images to contact them.

  10. Hull FC and World War One hero honoured with muralpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 26 October 2018

    A mural remembering Hull FC legend and World War One hero John 'Jack' Harrison has been created on the street where he grew up.

    John was a professional rugby league player and played for Hull FC.

    He scored 52 tries in the 1913-14 pre-war season, a club record that still stands.

    He crossed for 106 tries in his 116 matches before his last game for Hull FC on Boxing Day, 1916.

    He became a British army officer and and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions, which cost him his life in 1917.

    The mural is part of a community project to bring art to the area.

    Leeds-based supermarket giant Asda is to begin consultations with staff on changes that could mean up to 2,500 job cuts.

    An Asda representative said the firm needed to consider changing staff roles and working hours.

    The spokesperson added the proposed changes would allow Asda to do a better job for its customers.

    Asda, which has been owned by US retail giant Walmart since 1999, has agreed to be taken over by larger rival Sainsbury's.

    The proposed merger is the subject of an inquiry by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

    Bradford City co-owner Stefan Rupp has issued a statement giving his full backing to head coach David Hopkin.

    The Bantams have only won one of their nine league games since the Scot took over, but Rupp insists Hopkin "is the man to take the club forward in the long term".

    He added "He faces a huge challenge, there is no doubt about that, but we all stand right behind him."

    "David is currently scouring the market to strengthen the squad as injuries continue to trouble us."

    Police patrols in West Yorkshire are being stepped up ahead of Halloween, a night the force describes as "one of the busiest" of the year.

    The force is asking people to be "mindful of others in the community" who might not want to take part in trick or treating.

    Officers have designed a poster people can put in their window to tell people they aren't taking part.

    Ch Supt Mabs Hussain said: "This is one of the busiest weeks of the year for officers and staff who will be working tirelessly during this period of unprecedented demand."

    Calls to 999 at Halloween last year were up by 16% compared to an average weekday and people are being urged to use online reporting services if they can.

    The first people have moved into homes at a brand new council housing development in Leeds.

    The Leeds City Council project, built on the site of a former pub in Whinmoor, features 22 two-bedroom properties which are all expected to be filled by the end of next month.

    Each house boasts solar panels and the interior decor was influenced by residents and shoppers in the Whinmoor area.

    A local youth group has been asked to come up with a name for the housing development which will be revealed next month.

    Yorkshire scientists think they've come up with a way to reduce unnecessary cancer surgery, external.

    Experts at the University of York say they have worked out how to distinguish between fatal prostate cancer and a manageable type of the disease at an earlier stage.

    A recent study's shown for every single life saved 25 men go through surgery or radiotherapy they don't need.

    Professor Norman Maitland, from the University of York’s Department of Biology, said: "Unnecessary prostate treatment has both physical consequences for patients and their families, but is also a substantial financial burden on the NHS, where each operation will cost around £10,000.

    "Cancers contained in the prostate, however, have the potential to be 'actively monitored' which is cheaper, with fewer negative side-effects in patients with non-life threatening cancer."

  17. Big rise in complaints to Hull trainspublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 26 October 2018

    There's been a dramatic rise in the number of complaints made to rail operator Hull Trains, a new report reveals.

    The Office of Rail and Road report, external shows that in the first quarter of 2018 there had been a 60% increase in the number of complaints, compared to the same period in 2017.

    Hull Trains is the second worst rail operator in the country for responding to customer complaints in a timely manner, the report also shows.

    A total of 72% of complaints were dealt with by Hull Trains within 20 days, well below the national average of 94.9%.

    The company has struggled in recent months with its ageing fleet of trains, which is due to be replaced next year.

    More now on the news that a man from Rotherham has been jailed for three years and four months after a seven-month-old baby "choked to death" in a cot bed he designed.

    Oscar Abbey was found by his parents caught in the side of his bed at their home in York on 3 November 2016.

    He had got his head stuck while trying to crawl through a gap in the cot sold by Craig Williams's Playtime Beds Ltd.

    Williams, 37, pleaded guilty on Wednesday at Leeds Crown Court to failing to discharge the employer's general duty.

    A jury in his trial was asked to return a not guilty verdict to gross negligence manslaughter.
