    A wildlife photographer from Sheffield has built a house in his garden for mice.

    Simon Dell, from Hackenthorpe, said he found them running around in his back garden and did not want them to be eaten by neighbouring cats.

    He decided to build a log house and playground for the mice, who he named George, Mildred and Mini - their baby - and the rodents eat berries and nuts he collects on walks.

  3. Kirklees care home 'requires improvement'published at 13:01 British Summer Time 25 October 2018

    A Kirklees care home has been told to improve following recent inspections, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    White Rose House

    White Rose House in Thongsbridge was found to have breached regulations relating to the Health and Social Care Act by inspectors from the independent Care Quality Commission.

    It has been rated as "requiring improvement" in areas of safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness and leadership.

    The rating following two inspections in June.

    The report did state residents had described staff as "tip-top".

    White Rose House is operated by Darlington-based HC-One.

    A spokesperson said: "Whilst we are working hard to make all the improvements needed, we have also noted the CQC's positive comments."

    A Yorkshire council has been accused of becoming "increasingly dysfunctional" after it was revealed it lost 23,000 working days to staff sickness last year, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    At a meeting last week, members of City of York Council approved plans to pay a company £180,000 to try and cut absences by a third, but the Green Party is now calling for the decision to be reviewed.

    Green Party councillor Denise Craghill said: "This proposal to use a remote company to effectively hound staff back to work from the first few days of their sick leave seems punitive and unlikely to improve staff morale.

    "The introduction of mindfulness classes and a table tennis table are not going to make a significant impact unless we also address the root problems of an authority that's becoming increasingly dysfunctional," she added.

    Speaking at the council's executive meeting, Conservative council leader Ian Gillies said: "Where it's been in-house it's been slow, and we still have 23,000 days lost to sickness - so something has to be done.

    "This is a way of doing it and it will hopefully be managed in a sensitive way," he added.

    Police say the teenager looks much younger than his actual age.

    He was last seen on Beverley Road, Hull, at about 12.30 yesterday.

    He’s white, with short brown hair, very slim and around 5ft 2ins tall.

    Yorkshire is to benefit from almost £2m of Arts Council England cash to boost the region's cultural facilities.

    Art organisations in South, West and North Yorkshire are set to benefit from the cash.

    It is hoped it will help ensure they have the right spaces and resources to deliver their work.

    The successful applicants were:

    • Barnsley Museums - £125,000
    • East Street Arts in Leeds £400,000
    • Heads together Productions in Leeds £250,000
    • Opera North in Leeds £499,999
    • Hepworth Wakefield Trust £499,999
    • The York Early Music Foundation £144,200

    South Yorkshire Police say they stand by an e-fit picture they released of a suspect after it was mocked on social media.

    Dozens of people replied to a tweet from BBC Yorkshire, external after the force appealed for information about a robbery in the Royston area of Barnsley last month.

    Officers said the suspect had black hair, a bright ginger beard, a Barnsley accent and was 5ft 4in tall.

    South Yorkshire Police said in a statement: "The image was composed with the help of the victim, so of course, we stand by it."

    Last night, after a two-nil win over Ipswich, former member of the band One Direction Niall Horan was asked to send United a bit of luck via Twitter.

    Ouch!

    Well, Niall's 39.7 million followers soon came to his aid.

    One wrote "No one likes y’all, try again next time hun.

    "Niall’s solo career is better than anything y’all could ever accomplish."

    However, some other fans from across the globe were slightly less informed about the argument: "If Niall says no one likes Leeds, no one likes Leeds. I don’t know what Leeds is but I don’t like it now!"

    Horan is of course a big Derby County fan.

    Chauffering Scarborough's mayor to and from engagements has cost the borough council an average of £31,500 each year for the last three years - that's £10,000 more than average spends by authorities, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The council is coming to the end of a contract with a hire car firm to provide transport for Joe Plant, the Conservative mayor of the borough.

    The authority says it now intends to examine how the mayor gets about, to see if savings can be made.

    A recent study by the TaxPayers' Alliance found the average spend by authorities on mayoral cars was £21,804 per year.

    Scarborough Council will now review the use of the hire car and make recommendations on what course of action should be taken.

    The three options available are either for the mayor to use taxis and their own transport, or for the council to buy a car or, finally, for the council to continue using a chauffeur service.

    The last three mayors of Scarborough to have a full term of office attended between 320 to 350 events a year and the chauffeur service was used in about 50% of these cases.

    The service was the first tram-train journey in the UK, with the vehicle running on both tram and train tracks.

    The project is expected to have cost £75m and is about three years late.

    A teenager from Peterborough "may have come to some harm" and could now be in Huddersfield, according to police in Cambridgeshire.

    Isma Kouser hasn't been seen since leaving her home in the West Town area of the city on 10 October.

    The 17-year-old was last seen wearing a long yellow top and black trousers and she was carrying a large brown or tan handbag.

    Det Insp Dan Pawson, from Cambridgeshire Constabulary, said: “A considerable amount of time has now passed since she was last seen.

    "We are growing increasingly concerned that she may have come to some harm."

  18. Mulch Ado?: 'Green wall' aims to improve air qualitypublished at 09:50 British Summer Time 25 October 2018

    A new so-called "green wall" next to the main road between Huddersfield and Halifax takes a step closer to becoming reality today.

    The bank, covered in shrubs, wildflowers and trees, is being created at Salterhebble using 5,000 tonnes of soil dug out during work to widen the A629.

    Today, 300 sq m of mulch seed will be sprayed on to the bank to create the green wall.

    It's hoped the vertical garden will improve local air quality as well as brighten up the view.

    Boeing chose South Yorkshire as the site for its first European factory "for a reason", according to the aerospace giant's local boss.

    The £40m factory on Europa Way, Catcliffe, opens today at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.

    A total of 52 employees and 25 apprentices are expected to make about 10,000 aircraft components every month.

    The site's operations manager James Needham says the Sheffield City Region was Boeing's European choice.

    He says: "The ticket you're buying for your holiday next summer is for a plane that doesn't exist yet and hundreds of parts from the Sheffield area will go on all those aeroplanes.

    "Boeing could have selected anywhere to put this facility and they chose here for a reason."
