  1. Disruption continues for Hull Trains passengerspublished at 09:03 British Summer Time 25 October 2018

    The latest travel news for Hull Trains today, external shows that four of its services have been cancelled and six trains will either start or stop at Doncaster.

    The rail operator, which runs services between Hull and Kings Cross, says the changes are due to more trains than usual needing repairs.

    There have been several weeks of disruption for passengers.

    A carriage caught fire on 5 October at Grantham and on 13 October no direct Hull to London services ran because all the company's trains were broken.

    Hull Trains managing director Louise Cheeseman has previously said that the current trains are 18 years old and travel about 1,000 miles a day.

    A new fleet of trains is due in 2019.

  4. Trapped gannet rescued from East Yorkshire cliffspublished at 08:33 British Summer Time 25 October 2018

    Abseilers have swooped in to rescue a seabird trapped on a cliff in East Yorkshire with rope and plastic around its leg.

    The juvenile gannet became tangled in its nest halfway down the 300ft chalk Bempton Cliffs on Monday.

    It was spotted after its parents flew off for the winter along with thousands of other migrating gannets.

    RSPCA abseilers from around the country descended 150ft down the cliff to free the "clearly distressed" bird.

    "The bird had extensive line and plastic wrapped round its leg and would never have been able to fly and leave the nest without our assistance, so we're all extremely happy," an RSPCA spokesperson said.

    The bird has been taken to the RSPCA's Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre, in Cheshire.

    The UK's first operational tram-train service is due to roll out of the depot today in Sheffield.

    It's designed to run on the rail network and tram tracks and will travel between Sheffield and Rotherham.

    The service was supposed to be up and running two years ago and faced criticism after costs spiralled from £15m to £75m.

  6. CCTV appeal after woman punched in face in Leedspublished at 08:09 British Summer Time 25 October 2018

    An 18-year-old woman on a night out in Leeds was punched in the face by a man after her friend refused to give him a kiss, police say.

    The attack happened in Albion Street in the city centre at about 02:30 on Sunday 5 August, when the victim and her friend were followed by a group of four men.

    The men asked her friend for a kiss, which she refused and one of the men grabbed her.

    The 18-year-old then intervened and was punched, fell to the ground and was left with a severely bruised and swollen jaw.

    Anyone who recognises the man in the picture is being asked to contact police.

  7. Police Commissioner 'shocked' by bullying allegationspublished at 07:54 British Summer Time 25 October 2018

    North Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has just under three weeks to formally respond to a report which says she's displayed "bullying behaviour".

    The county's police and crime panel has been examining allegations made by former employees about PCC Julia Mulligan.

    The panel's complaints sub-committee heard allegations Mrs Mulligan had demonstrated consistent disrespect for one of the complainants, by interrupting, making negative and humiliating comments and avoiding eye contact.

    The sub-committee concluded there was sufficient evidence from four statements by former staff to suggest "the perception of constant criticism formed a key feature of the working environment" for some staff in Mrs Mulligan's office.

    In a statement, Mrs Mulligan said, external she had been "left shocked" at both the panel's approach and findings, saying she was dismayed by the lack of attention paid to the evidence she provided.

    She also said she can be "challenging and difficult", but considered this was part and parcel of being able to survive in the "male dominated" area in which she works.

    "People do not recognise the picture painted by the report, but this is clearly a time to pause and reflect, which I will do," she added.

  8. Police search for missing East Yorkshire man, 87published at 07:40 British Summer Time 25 October 2018

    An 87-year-old man has gone missing in East Yorkshire and police are asking for help finding him.

    Peter Taylor was last seen in Driffield at about 21:00 last night.

    He's described as 6ft tall, well-built with a bald head.

    Police want anyone who has seen him or knows where he is to contact them.

  9. Debenhams 'seeks to close 50 stores' in radical overhaulpublished at 07:18 British Summer Time 25 October 2018

    Debenhams is understood to be seeking to close 50 of its 166 stores in a radical overhaul as it prepares to reveal a record £500m loss.

    The struggling department store chain has previously said 10 stores were earmarked for closure over the next five years but has raised that target.

    In a statement, the firm says it's "increasing closure plans from 10 to up to 50 under-performing stores over three to five years".

    Debenhams has stores in Beverley, Hull, Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Sheffield, York, Harrogate and Scarborough.

    However, the 07:53 Leeds to Manchester Piccadilly Service has been cancelled.

    Boeing's first European factory is due to be officially opened later in South Yorkshire.

    The US firm revealed plans last year for the £20m plant at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in Catcliffe, Rotherham.

    When it was announced, the President of Boeing Europe, Sir Michael Arthur, said South Yorkshire was chosen due to its skilled workforce and the firm's links with the AMRC.

    The factory will produce hi-tech components for the firm's 737, 737 MAX and 777 aircraft.

    A police investigation is continuing in York today after a man was left with serious injuries to his face after being assaulted by another man with a "sharp implement".

    It happened in the Bootham area of the city centre in the early hours of yesterday morning.

    The victim, who was with his girlfriend, fled to Gillygate where they called police.

    The victim first encountered his attacker about three hours earlier near a city centre nightclub, police say.

    It happened at an off-licence on Station Road in Royston on 21 September when a bearded man went into the shop and talked to the shopkeeper, implying he was going to buy something.

    He then threatened the shopkeeper with a knife and demanded money but the man ended up leaving empty-handed.

    South Yorkshire Police say the shopkeeper was understandably "left distressed".

    Budding bakers will have to stockpile items, with some shops agreeing not to sell items which could be used for anti-social behaviour.

    South Yorkshire Police is leading the call as part of Operation Mischief, handing out posters to shops informing potential customers that they won't be selling some items to under-16s.
