    Safety measures are being put in place in York to keep pedestrians safe from cars.

    Following advice from police, a trial is starting to reduce the risk of cars mounting footpaths - it will reduce vehicle access to St Sampson's Square and Coney Street.

    Bollards will also be put in place by the Mansion House.

    Members of a theatre company in Leeds are stepping in to secure the future of what's thought to be England's oldest social club.

    The Holbeck opened in 1877, but in a few years ago it hit some financial difficulties and recently it's been run by volunteers.

    But now Slung Low, which is based in nearby railway arches, is to move into the club to run it.

    It'll remain as a social club, but the building will also be used for performances and teaching.

    Slung Low has promised to pay staff and volunteers a living wage.

    A woman was thrown 10ft into the air when she was involved in a hit-and-run in Huddersfield, police say.

    The victim, who is in her 40s, was walking along Thornhill Avenue last Friday at about 10:50 when she was hit by a black or grey Vauxhall Corsa.

    She was thrown across the road and landed near a parked car. However, her injuries aren't thought to be life-threatening.

    The driver of the Corsa didn't stop and instead drove on towards Huddersfield town centre, according to police.

    The car had a damaged windscreen and was missing a windscreen wiper.

    Anyone who saw what happened, or has any information about the incident, is being asked to contact police.

    East Yorkshire tennis player Kyle Edmund will not play again this season after an MRI scan revealed a small amount of fluid behind his left knee.

    The injury is not thought to be serious, but the player, who's from near Beverley, has been advised to rest and, as a result, has withdrawn from the Paris Masters.

    Edmund, 23, has had his best season to date, reaching the Australian Open semi-finals and a world ranking of 14.

    A quarter of LGBT+ people in York say they've had problems accessing health services, according to a survey carried out in the city.

    Many respondents have told Healthwatch York, external that they've experienced negative attitudes related to their sexuality or gender identity when dealing with health professionals.

    The report's main recommendation is "that providers treat all those accessing services with equal respect to ensure services are more inclusive".

    City of York Council says it welcomes the findings of the report which highlights a number of areas where health services could be improved.

    A man has been left with serious injuries after the car he was driving left the road as he was overtaking.

    The crash happened on the A628 Hemsworth Bypass at 13:20 on Sunday when the man's Saab hit a tree as he was overtaking and heading towards Brierley, police say.

    The driver, a 41-year-old man, received serious but not life-threatening injuries.

    Volunteers at a community garden in Barnsley have installed a special beacon to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War One.

    The volunteers at Old Martha's Yard in Hoyland have been crowdfunding and commissioned local artist Alex Dodson to build the beacon which will be lit on 11 November.

    The figures on the beacon include saluting soldiers, gunners and barbed wire.

    A father from Hull who taught himself how to create a virtual reality program to help his daughter who has a rare learning disability has won a top award.

    Craig works as a chef, but wanted to find a way to support his daughter Imogen, who has Williams Sydrome.

    The rare condition means she has learning difficulties and is easily distracted, so Craig created the computer program to help with her homework.

    His work has won him an award from the Design Council and he is now raising money to try to make it available to more children with learning disabilities.

    One person has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash on the A1(M) this morning.

    Officers from Highways England and North Yorkshire Police have been dealing with the crash involving a HGV between junctions 46 at Wetherby and 48 at Boroughbridge.

    Sgt Paul Cording, from North Yorkshire Police, says the recovery is complex as it involves such a large vehicle.

    "I'm hoping that within a couple of hours we might be able to get lane three and possibly lane two open, but there is still a full closure now. If you can, please avoid the area," he said.

    Two of Yorkshire's finest bakers are set to compete against each other tonight for the coveted Great British Bake Off crown as the latest series draws to a close.

    Kim-Joy, from Leeds, and Rahul, from Rotherham, will also go up against fellow contestant Ruby, with the winner set to be announced tonight.

    The series, which has now been running for eight years, sees contestants whip up their creations in the famous white marquee in Berkshire's Welford Park.

    During the final, the contestants will be in the tent to tackle doughnuts as the signature challenge and for the showstopper.

    But Channel 4 has not given any details of the task or the location for the technical challenge, apart from saying it is "deceptively simple".

    A Bradford MP says she hopes immediate action is taken to improve children's services in the area after they were judged "inadequate" by inspectors.

    A report by education watchdog Ofsted said the service had "rapidly deteriorated" in the past 18 months.

    The major factor has been an increased demand for services at the same time as the loss of a "significant number of experienced social workers and managers, who left to work for other local authorities", said the report.

    Responding, council leader Susan Hinchcliffe said the council was "very sorry...and we will act quickly and address it".

    Bradford South's Labour MP Judith Cummins says councils must be provided with adequate funding to meet demand.

    A "zombie" flash mob turned a South Yorkshire street into a dancefloor when its members recreated parts of Michael Jackson's famous Thriller dance.

    Dozens of dancers took part in the performance on Steade Road, in Sheffield, after it was organised by Kate West to celebrate her 50th birthday.

    Commuters are likely to face more disruption on Hull's roads this morning.

    Roadworks have closed North Bridge for the rest of the week and it's thought a burst water main on Bankside is unlikely to be fixed before Friday.

    Monday's morning rush hour also saw two crashes in the area which added to the congestion.

    Do you recognise this man? Police want to speak to him following a spate of tyre slashings in North Yorkshire.

    The slashings happened overnight between Thursday 11 October and Friday 12 October, with a number of tyres being damaged at several locations in Thirsk and Sowerby.

    Officers are asking members of the public to get in touch if they recognise the man in the CCTV image as they believe that he may have important information.

    At least £700 has been raised in a crowdfunding campaign by friends to help pay for the funeral for a boy who was stabbed to death in Halifax.

    Jamie Brown, 17, was fatally attacked in Ovenden on Saturday night.

    Six teenagers, one of them being 14-years-old, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are still being questioned over his death.

    A public meeting is due to be held in South Yorkshire later as people get a chance to have their say on plans for the high-speed HS2 rail route.

    There have already been a number of consultation meetings across Yorkshire relating to the proposed HS2 route.

    Phase 2b of the line is planned to start in Birmingham and end in Leeds, with an extension into North Yorkshire.

    Campaigners argue it could harm some local communities, but building firms say it'll create thousands of jobs.

    The meeting will be held at Hellaby Hall in Rotherham this afternoon.
