  3. Orgreave campaigners urge public inquiry into policingpublished at 07:24 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2018

Campaigners are stepping up calls for a public inquiry into the so-called Battle of Orgreave.

    Miners and police at Orgreave

The Orgreave Trust and Justice Campaign (OTJC) will hand in a letter to the Home Office later pressing for action.

In 2016, former Home Secretary Amber Rudd ruled against an inquiry into the events during the 1984-85 miners' strike.

Kate Flannery, OTJC secretary, said some documents that had been released highlighted "active government involvement" in the miners' strike.

Thousands of pickets and police officers clashed at Orgreave during the year-long miners' strike.

Police horses charged at the crowd as officers followed to make arrests.

The police said they were hit by rocks and bottles and had to react to protect themselves, however the miners said they were peacefully protesting when the police charged.

A total of 95 mineworkers were arrested, although all charges were dropped, and a number were injured.

Drama ensued as Rahul created a rock garden, inspired by Victorian explorers bringing back exciting plants from around the world.

But his glass storage container smashed due to the heat in the famous white tent and after a swift clean up by producers he had to start again - with an extra 15 minutes to make up for lost time.

After being named champion, Rahul said: "I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. I just feel I need to talk with my mum."

North Bridge is shut this week for resurfacing work.

It has led to long delays for drivers, because Bankside has also had to be closed because of a burst water main.

Hull City Council say the resurfacing work is a crucial part of schemes to tackle congestion, and said "the short-term pain will be worth the long-term benefits."

    Quote Message

Motorists are asked to stagger journey times and make use of the public transport network. Even if just 5% of motorists choose a more sustainable form of transport, there would be a significant reduction in congestion levels."

Members of Unison have said the proposed cuts, which were announced in July, are being "rushed" and have previously called on the university to pause the process.

Announcing the plan earlier this year, vice-chancellor Brian Cantor said they came as the university was experiencing a decrease in applications from the UK and as a result of changes to the government's funding arrangements.

Unison said their members would "be encouraged to attend the picket line in Halloween costume" to highlight "the horrors of the restructure and redundancy process".

The university have been contacted for a comment.

Her remains were discovered in a stream near Pen-y-ghent, more than a mile from the nearest road, in 2004.

The woman has never been identified, but police say they believe she may have been brought to the UK as a so-called mail order bride.

A post-mortem examination was unable to establish the cause of her death, but cold case detectives say it is likely she was killed and brought to the location where she was dumped in a 4x4.
