    A judge has jailed four Huddersfield grooming gang members for a total for 36 years, telling them their abuse "defies understanding".

    Leeds Crown Court heard how some of their teenage victims were plied with drugs and alcohol before being abused.

    Judge Simon Phillips told them that the girls' victim impact statements made for "harrowing reading", adding that one girl felt like she was "used goods".

    She was 17-years-old and only managed to escape the defendants when she became pregnant, the court heard.

    The four jailed men were members of a 20-strong gang of men who carried out the "inhuman" abuse of a total of 15 girls over a period spanning 2004 to 2011.

    Two teenagers have been charged following a burglary at a property in Scarborough.

    Officers say a woman was allegedly threatened with a knife in the burglary at a property off Queen's Street at about 17:30 on Saturday evening.

    A 16-year-old and a 17-year-old have been charged with aggravated burglary.

    They were remanded in custody to appear at York Magistrates' Court.

    Four men who were part of a grooming gang in Huddersfield have been jailed for raping and abusing three young girls.

    Mohammed Akram, Niaz Ahmed, Mohammed Ibrar and Asif Bashir have been sentenced at Leeds Crown Court after being found guilty of a total of 10 offences.

    They were part of a gang of 20 men who groomed and abused 15 girls, some as young as 11, between 2004 and 2011.

    The gang's ringleader, Amere Singh Dhaliwal, was jailed for life, with a minimum term of 18 years.

    Mohammed Akram, 33, of Springdale Street, Huddersfield, was found guilty of two counts of rape and two counts of trafficking for sexual exploitation and sentenced to 17 years.

    Niaz Ahmed, 54, of Woodthorpe Terrace, Huddersfield, was found guilty of sexual assault and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and sentenced to five years.

    Asif Bashir, 33, of Thornton Lodge Road, Huddersfield, was cleared of one charge of sexual activity with a child but found guilty of, rape and attempted rape and sentenced to 11 years.

    Mohammed Imran Ibrar, 34, of Manchester Road, Huddersfield, was found guilty of trafficking for sexual exploitation and assault and was sentenced to three years in jail.

    There are "totally unacceptable delays" in transferring mentally-ill prisoners from Wakefield high-security jail to secure accommodation, a report has found.

    The delays at HMP Wakefield are exacerbating some inmates' conditions, inspectors said.

    Peter Clarke, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, will now take the "unusual step" of making a recommendation directly to the prisons minister calling for action.

    The report would be used "to further develop" Wakefield, the government has said.

    However, the report also described Wakefield Prison as calm, secure and decent.

    Nearly 100 vehicles have been broken into in Hull in the space of three weeks, according to Humberside Police.

    A total of 21 of the thefts happened on roads around Great Thornton Street (pictured) in the first three weeks of October.

    In many cases car windows were smashed and valuable items were stolen, police say.

    Det Insp Rich Osgerby said: "Our advice is to make sure that anything of value is not on show when you leave your car unattended. Don't tempt opportunist thieves."

    Trinity Shopping Centre in Leeds have announced that Kim-Joy Hewlett, finalist in this year's Great British Bake Off, will be turning on their Christmas lights this weekend.

    The 27-year-old baker, who's from the city, will have the honour of turning the lights on the huge 60ft Christmas tree this Saturday.

    Dan Wharton, from Trinity Leeds, said: “Kim-Joy sadly didn’t win Bake Off but she certainly won the nation’s hearts."

    Men suspected of committing "dreadful offences" against children are not being pursued by prosecutors, according to the MP for Huddersfield.

    Labour MP Barry Sheerman said new child abuse cases were not being taken on by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

    In the Commons, he cited "senior police sources" as saying the CPS did not have the capacity to take on new cases.

    The Attorney General said if true, it would be of "profound concern".

    He promised an investigation.

    Firefighters have been attacked with fireworks and eggs as they tackled a blaze in Sheffield.

    The attack took place as officers tackled a suspected arson attack at a terraced house on Lifford Street last night.

    Objects were thrown at the firefighters, but nobody was injured.

    Area Manager Tony Carlin at South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said the service is appalled at the attack.

    "Attacks like this place the safety of our firefighters, and the people they are trying to protect, at risk," he said.

    Fishermen have helped clear more than 25 tonnes of rubbish from seas off the Yorkshire Coast this year, according to wildlife campaigners.

    The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has been encouraging workers on fishing boats to collect litter found at sea as part of its Fishing for Litter campaign.

    It says record amounts of rubbish have been collected this year.

    A woman is in a serious condition in hospital after she came off the moped she was riding and hit a wall in village near Huddersfield.

    The woman, who is in her 40s, crashed on New Mill Road in Brockholes at about 11:00 on Wednesday.

    She was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries and is still being treated by doctors.

    Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

    A woman who fell 16ft down a well in York has been rescued by the emergency services.

    The woman, who is in her 60s, was waist deep in water in the well in Strensall, when rescue crews arrived at the scene at about 18:15 last night.

    She suffered a head injury as a result of the fall and is now being treated in hospital, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service.

    The latest changes to Ryanair's baggage policies take effect today, meaning passengers flying with them from Leeds Bradford Airport who want to take anything more than a small bag on board will have to pay.

    Only those paying £6 for priority boarding will be able to take a small suitcase of up to 10kg in the cabin, that option being cheaper than the £8 charge to check in a 10kg bag.

    The changes, the second this year, are intended to reduce flight delays, according to Ryanair.

    Sheffield City Region has defended a job advert for someone to run mayor Dan Jarvis' office for just over £55,000 a year, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

    The combined authority, which covers Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley, is looking for a "proactive, credible and authoritative voice on behalf of the mayor to edit, comment, decide and approve communications".

    The successful candidate will also be in charge of "considerable" financial budgets and be a key adviser to the mayor.

    Dave Smith, managing director of Sheffield City Region, said it's an important role which needs to have strong candidates.

    "This role will provide the mayor, Dan Jarvis with the right level of support to deliver on his manifesto commitments to residents across the whole region."

    The authority is also looking for a £37,000 a year communications officer to mainly write speeches, handle media requests, run social media channels and write press releases.

    An end to roadworks which have been causing problems for drivers in Hull this week has been delayed because of cold weather.

    North Bridge will now open in the early hours of Monday 5 November because the new surface has taken longer than expected to harden because of the cold conditions, the council says.

    Further works will have to be carried out on the bridge at a later date and the planned closure of Beverley Road this weekend has also been postponed, the council adds.

    Staff at Bradford University are on strike for a second day.

    Members of Unison have walked out over plans for redundancies and what the union says are pay downgrades and poor management.

    Yesterday, staff members were on the picket line dressed in Halloween costumes "to highlight the horrors" facing about 250 administration and support workers.

    The strike's due to last for another day, with a 24-hour stoppage also planned for next Tuesday.

    In a statement, the University of Bradford said: "The Higher Education sector has become market-driven and increasingly competitive.

    "In order to remain financially viable and sustainable, we, along with other institutions, will continue to innovate, evolve and reshape internally."
