    A music event is being held in Sheffield tonight to try and counter the recent rise in gun and knife crime in the city.

    The event, called Undisputed, is at Plug and will see eight grime MCs go head to head in a rap battle-style tournament for a cash prize.

    The rules include not rapping about guns and knives.

    The idea is to challenge stereotypes which have linked the urban music genre to gang violence.

    Train users in Yorkshire are facing more strike action on Northern services in the run-up to Christmas.

    The Rail and Maritime Union (RMT) has announced five more walkouts on Saturdays between 17 November and 15 December.

    A strike on Northern trains is already expected to go ahead tomorrow and Saturday 10 November in the long-running row over the role of guards.

    The company says there will be a significantly reduced service.

    A woman in her 70s has died after she was hit by a bus in Ilkley yesterday.

    It happened on Brook Street at about 15:20 and involved a single-decker bus.

    The woman was on foot at the time, and she died at the scene.

    The driver of the bus has been interviewed by police.

    Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

    The crash happened on the A661 near Spofforth, but the woman driving the car managed to escape from the wreckage.

    The woman was left with only a minor injury, police described her as a "very lucky young lady".

    South Yorkshire's former Police and Crime Commissioner will not face criminal charges for perjury, according to the police watchdog.

    The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) says it will not be making a referral to the Director of Public Prosecutions after carrying out an investigation into complaints made against Shaun Wright.

    It was alleged he had lied while giving evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee in September 2014 while still Police and Crime Commissioner.

    Mr Wright, who was head of children's services in Rotherham between 2005 and 2010, gave evidence after a report found more than 1,400 girls had been abused in the town between 1997 and 2013.

    The IOPC says it has found no evidence that a criminal offence was committed.

    Josh Warrington, Leeds' current IBF World Boxing champion, will be turning on the city's Christmas lights this year.

    He will be flicking the switch next Thursday at Victoria Gardens.

    He'll be joined by Britain’s Got Talent’s Micky P Kerr and 2017 X Factor finalist Kevin Davy White.

    Josh said "It’s going to be an absolute pleasure to be turning on the Christmas lights and getting everyone into the spirit of Christmas."

    The 27-year-old boxer will be defending his title against Carl Frampton on 22 December at Manchester Arena.

    A man has been stabbed in the arm and threatened with an imitation gun in Doncaster, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    Officers say the 24-year-old victim was riding his bike along Maple Grove in Conisbrough on Monday, when he was stopped by three men wearing hoodies.

    The man had the fake gun held to his head and then stabbed him in the arm.

    The thieves then made off with his mobile phone and keys, police said.

    Local communities must have a say on fracking issues, according to the East Yorkshire MP Sir Greg Knight.

    The government is considering relaxing the planning rules around shale gas schemes, which would make it easier to for developers to carry out exploration work.

    MPs debated the issue in parliament this week.

    Conservative Sir Greg said communities should have more say about where fracking takes place.

    Dogs and their handlers from North Yorkshire Police are to star in their own TV series.

    Dog Detectives, which starts next Monday on channel Quest Red, is a 10-part series which follows the force's dog unit as they fight crime across the county.

    Camera crews have been following the unit since early this year.

    They've been capturing the challenges of detecting anything from missing people to fleeing criminals, firearms and drugs.

    The unit's PC Martin Gayles said: “I’m proud to be part of the police dog family and be able to highlight the vital contribution we bring to operational policing.”

  13. Driver dies after driving wrong way on A1(M)published at 10:50 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2018

    A man has died after driving the wrong way down the A1(M) near Ferrybridge.

    The man, in his 30s, was driving on the southbound carriageway but heading northbound between J42 and J41 at about 18:20 last night.

    His Suzuki Swift then crashed with a silver Hyundai i40 and also hit the central barrier.

    The driver of the Suzuki suffered fatal injuries, the driver of the Hyundai was also injured.

    He was taken to hospital, but his injuries aren't thought to be life-threatening.

    Other cars may have been involved in minor collisions with the Suzuki before the fatal crash happened, according to West Yorkshire Police.

    Sheffield is set to receive £4.6m in extra funding for adult social care, but a local MP has claimed the city's budget has a spending gap of £35m.

    According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts has said the sum will go towards adult and social care in the city from the £650 million promised by the Chancellor in Monday's Budget.

    He said: "In my own city of Sheffield, from those national figures, Sheffield would probably get around £4.6 million extra for social care on a one-off basis because it's not going to continue.

    "The current spending gap for next year in the city's budget is £35 million, by 2020 they'll continue to have to use reserves on an unsustainable basis and Sheffield isn't even in as bad a position overall as many other county councils."

    The family of a Sheffield teenager who survived a crash after the car automatically called for an ambulance believes the system saved his life.

    Bradley Duke, 14, was seriously injured when the car he was travelling to school in crashed into a wall at 60mph.

    The crash happened earlier this year in Totley.

    Everyone in the car was knocked unconscious.

    The BMW alerted the emergency services using an automatic system.

    It gave rescuers the car's exact location.

    Since April this year, the eCall system has been compulsory in all new cars in the EU.

    It calls the 112 emergency number if an airbag is deployed.

    Bradley suffered fractures to his skull, face, spine and wrist.

    His mother Claire said he owes his life to the alert system.

    "Without the system, Bradley wouldn't be here today", she said.

    Staff at the University of Bradford have walked out for the third day in a row in an ongoing protest over cuts and redundancies.

    Bosses have defended the restructure, the final details of which are due to be announced on Monday, claiming financial challenges facing the wider higher education sector are to blame.

    About 50 Unison members at the university were picketing over the past two days.

    A fourth day of action is expected to be held on Tuesday.

    Ossett United are putting on a bonfire display this weekend, with tonnes of wood currently being built before the blaze tonight.

    Volunteers at the Ingfield Stadium have been collecting pallets, spare cuts of wood and waste that the community have donated.

    Nick Smith from Ossett United says the sold out event has been a success so far because of help from friends in the town.

    A Rotherham-based firm is rolling out small polymer balls that they say can help use 80% less water when doing laundry.

    Tech firm Xeros, based at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, started selling specially designed washing machines, under the name Hydrofinity, on the back of scientific research from the University of Leeds.

    The beads replace water and help to pull dirt from fabrics.

    The household machine uses 50% less water than a conventional washing machine, while the commercial version, which uses 70,000 spheres, uses 80% less.

    It's to test how they respond to a terror attack, including scenarios involving a siege with hostages and detaining attackers with guns.

    Police, ambulance and fire services took part, with Det Supt Matthew Davison from West Yorkshire Police saying it's a good time to run the training.

    He said, "We're on the run up to the Christmas period and the threat level in the UK is severe, so it's an appropriate time to run this exercise."

    The government should commit to a so-called "latte levy" to reduce the number of disposable coffee cups, according to environmental campaigners in Bridlington.

    The Chancellor rejected the proposal in this week's budget, but some MPs believe a 25p charge would encourage more customers to switch to reusable mugs.

    About 2.5bn coffee cups are thrown away every year in the UK.
