Two men wearing balaclavas went into the Metro Express store in Thornhill Road, Longwood, near Huddersfield, at about 19:45 yesterday.
They were armed with a baseball bat and what is believed to be two handguns.
After demanding cash from the till they attacked the only member of staff.
The victim, a 31-year-old man, was taken to hospital with a serious arm injury.
The suspects left empty-handed and made off in the direction of Longwood Road.

A 71-year-old woman remains in a "serious" condition after she was hit by an unmarked armed response police car in Leeds earlier this week.
She was one of two people hit by the vehicle in Roseville Road, Leeds, on Wednesday.
She suffered serious injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening, while the man managed to leave the scene.
The case has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The white Ford Katamarano was taken from the driveway of a home in Barlow, near Selby, at about 14:00 on Monday.
The left-hand drive vehicle, which had a wing mirror missing, was found burnt out in the Nottinghamshire area on Thursday.
North Yorkshire Police are trying to trace two men, seen in CCTV footage arriving at the property in a white Ford Focus.

Women suffering heart attacks are twice as likely to die as men, according to researchers at the University of Leeds.
Their study found that more than 8,200 women could have survived their heart attacks had they been given the same quality of treatment as men, but researchers believe the actual number could be much higher.

More than £60,000 has been seized after it was found in a car stopped by police in Sheffield.
The money was in a carrier bag on the back seat of the car when it was stopped on the Sheffield Parkway after being followed from Doncaster.
