The Grade I listed Temple Works building, in Holbeck, has been the subject of several stalled rescue attempts.

Leeds City Council has now agreed to spend money to weatherproof the building, while grand designs for a renovation can be completed.

Councillor Richard Lewis told a meeting about the landmark building's future: "It is a bonkers building in many ways, but has huge potential for the regeneration of the South Bank."

A report stated the building suffered major structural damage in 2008 when part of the roof and frontage fell in.

The site had been earmarked for a new £50m manufacturing facility for fashion giant Burberry, but the company pulled out of the deal in June last year.

It was bought by Commercial Estates Group last November.

The council will provide about £100,000 of the total £400,000 cost for weatherproofing.

  6. Police plea to motorists: 'Don't swear at us'published at 07:00 Greenwich Mean Time 22 November 2018

South Yorkshire Police closed the M1 at junction 37 yesterday evening to deal with an overturned van and its occupants.

Officers say traffic was moving again soon after the incident, but two lanes remained closed due to "a large amount of diesel and vehicle debris on the road."

The delay however seemed to anger some motorists.

Police posted a message for impatient drivers on social media saying: "There was no need for a few motorists to swear and use other offensive language at the emergency services for making them a little late.

"If this was you, just think, it may be you in this situation one day and you'll welcome the sounds and sights of the police, ambulance and fire service."

The occupants of the van, who had suffered minor injuries, received treatment at the scene.

The government wants police forces to increase the amount they contribute to pensions, but Mr Turner said this could mean Humberside Police cutting the jobs of "130 police officers, or all 250 PCSOs".

Both Labour and Conservative MPs from the Humber region have written to the Home Secretary Sajid Javid saying Home Office funding must be found for the changes.

The Home Office says it's working closely with forces to understand the impact this change will have and that it's also in discussions with police leaders.
