Sabastiaan Gahr was driving a lorry when he was stopped by HMRC at King George Docks on 13 June.
Gahr, 41, said he was delivering soil to a garden centre in Liverpool, but 5,200,000 cigarettes were found in the vehicle.
The cigarettes were packed in cardboard boxes, wrapped in white plastic and hidden behind bags of soil, Grimsby Crown Court heard.
A woman has died following a crash on Handsworth Road, Sheffield last week.
The 75-year-old pedestrian was involved in a crash with a motorbike near to the junction with Fitzalan Road.
She had been in hospital with life-threatening injuries but died last night, police say.
South Yorkshire Police is now appealing for witnesses to the crash to get in touch.
