    It won't cost a penny to spend a penny at Leeds station from next week as the charge to use the toilet there is scrapped as a "a long-overdue Christmas present" for customers.

    The 40p charge will be lifted from 17 December, according to Network Rail.

    Rail minister Andrew Jones had planned to scrap the fees in Leeds, Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly stations from April 2019.

    He said the improvement to stations was brought forward due to the "unacceptable" disruption suffered by train customers.

    Mr Jones announced a £15m benefits package for Northern and TransPennine Express users last week.

    A woman is being treated in hospital after being injured in a hit-and-run in Goole last night.

    The victim, a pedestrian, was struck by a vehicle on Mariners Street at about 19:00 yesterday.

    She suffered injuries which are described as serious but not life-threatening.

    The motorist, who was driving a dark coloured car, possibly a Ford, failed to stop at the scene, police say.

    Officers want to speak to the driver as a matter of urgency and are appealing for anyone with information to get in touch with them.

    A so-called "human vending machine" using students from the University of Hull is being installed in London today.

    The idea behind the machine, which is being installed near St Paul's Cathedral, is to highlight the issue of slave labour in food production across the world.

    The university says many people are unaware how closely they're coming into contact with trafficking and forced labour in the food items we buy.

    The company which runs the majority of buses in Leeds says it's almost a third of a way through plans to make services more environmentally friendly.

    First West Yorkshire is investing £71m in 284 new ultra-low emission vehicles..

    By next month more than 100 of them will have been delivered, the firm says, with the new fleet set to be fully introduced by the end of 2020.

    Leeds City Council hopes the scheme will improve air quality in the city by reducing nitrogen oxides and dioxides emissions by an estimated 87%.

    Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann has promised to seek out and punish the Rovers fans who spat in the face of a Bristol Rovers ball boy on Saturday.

    The Doncaster boss believes that two or three fans carried out the act during the 4-0 win at the Memorial Ground.

    Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, Mr McCann said he was "disgusted" by their behaviour.

    "One of the ball boys from Bristol Rovers has come in crying his eyes out. If we find out who those fans are I'll make sure they'll get dealt with", he said.

    "It takes two or three idiots to spit in a ball boy's face. I think it's embarrassing."

    Two brothers are due to appear in court later after four people, including a one-year-old boy, died in a crash with a car involved in a police pursuit in Sheffield.

    Adnan Ashraf Jarral, 35, and his son, Usman Adnan Jarral, died along with Miroslave Duna, 50, and Vlasta Dunova, 41, last month.

    All four were killed when their people carrier crashed with a VW Golf.

    At a previous hearing last month at Sheffield Magistrates' Court, the VW driver Elliott Bower (pictured right), 18, and Declan Bower (pictured left), 23, were remanded in custody.

    No pleas were entered.

    Three other people who were travelling in the people carrier were also injured.

    The dig's taking place as work's being carried out to provide the building with an electricity supply.

    Computer game designers are among a team of researchers at the University of Leeds developing a "ground-breaking" robot to help rehabilitate stroke patients.

    The patient's arm is guided by the robotic joystick to complete computer games, gradually improving their strength and movement.

    A team of engineers, medics and games designers say the trials so far have had promising results.

    Professor Martin Levesley, one of the engineers behind the project, says: "Learning how to use your arm can be repetitive and boring.

    "This machine takes some of the stress out of rehab by making it more exciting."

    An 85-year-old woman is being treated in hospital for serious injuries after a collision in Doncaster.

    It happened at about 13:55 on Sunday when a red Nissan Micra collided with a police van outside the Asda store at the junction of Herten Way and Gliwice Way.

    A police officer was also taken to hospital suffering from minor injuries.

    The incident has been referred to the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

  14. Over 20 arrested in single week in drink-drive crackdownpublished at 06:57 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2018

    More than 20 people have been arrested in one week as part of a Christmas drink-drive campaign in North Yorkshire.

    One driver in Scarborough was more than three-and-a-half times the legal limit.

    Police say: "On average, those arrested have recorded breathalyser readings of almost twice the legal drink-drive limit."

    Five motorists were arrested within the first 24 hours of the campaign – three in York, one in Scarborough and one in Harrogate. The youngest was aged 17.

    The number of drivers caught has prompted traffic officers to reiterate their warning: "If you drink and drive, we will catch you."

    They've also appealed to people who see motorists they suspect are about to drink-drive to contact them.

    So far, eight people have been charged and bailed to appear in front of magistrates.

    A 14-year-old boy has gone missing in the Hull area and police are asking for help in finding him.

    Jack Beal was last seen leaving his home in East Hull at about 16:00 on Friday, police say.

    He is 5ft 5ins tall, slim with short brown hair and when last seen was wearing a black jacket, black trainers and black tracksuit bottoms.

    Anyone who sees him is being urged to contact police.
