    A driver doing 38mph in a 70mph zone aroused the suspicions of police in North Yorkshire last night...

    Unsurprisingly, the slow Volkswagen, being driven on the A19 at Thirsk, wasn't difficult to catch.

    Officers said they thought the speed the man was driving "seemed a bit strange on a quiet road" - but once stopped, things became a bit clearer.

    Police say: "He turned out to have never held a driving licence and the car had no insurance or road fund licence either."

    They added: "The gentleman had only popped out for a quick run out - from Walsall."

    That's about 140 miles from Thirsk.

    The meandering motorist is due to appear in court at a later date.

    Meanwhile, police say they sent him on his way - on the last train out of Thirsk.

    Three men are due to appear in court in Leeds later charged with the murder of a man who died after being shot in the city earlier this year.

    Christopher Lewis, 24, from the city, died a day after he was shot in Reginald Street in Chapeltown on Wednesday 1 August in what police believe was a "targeted" attack.

    Three men were arrested on Wednesday and have since been charged on suspicion of murdering Mr Lewis, police say.

    Steven Mark Grey, 38, Jonathan Gledhill, 37, and Denzil Browne, 49, are due to appear before magistrates in Leeds this morning.

    Five other people who were arrested as part of the investigation this week have been released on police bail while enquiries continue, according to police.

    More than 400,000 passengers a year are expected to use a new railway station in West Yorkshire, it's been revealed.

    Plans for the new station, at Elland, which will link passengers to Bradford, Leeds and Huddersfield as well as Manchester, have now been unveiled.

    Planners say the new station, built on the existing Calder Valley route, will:

    • Serve as a Park and Ride station, capturing commuter and leisure trips to relieve congestion on the A629
    • Promote sustainable growth by encouraging more people on to the rail network and decreasing car journeys
    • Provide new jobs in Elland by making it more attractive to new businesses and support existing local businesses

    Part of the station will be "elevated" and would be accessed by lifts at both sides of the station which will be served by a minimum of two trains an hour, according to West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

    Police in York say they are growing "increasingly concerned" over the whereabouts of a woman missing from the city.

    Laura McBride, 24, went missing last night from her home in Ordnance Lane.

    She is described as white, 5ft 4ins tall, with brown hair and brown eyes.

    Anyone who thinks they've seen her is being asked to call police.

    Patients in Sheffield are set to benefit from a new £2m scanner after a successful fundraising appeal.

    This is the first scanner of its type in the region and promises to speed up research aimed at tackling life-changing diseases like Parkinson's and cancer.

    The MRI-PET scanner has been paid for by 11,000 donations, with the equipment being housed at the Sheffield Scanner facility at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

    A road's been closed in Halifax since the early hours of this morning after an HGV crashed when the driver had what police describe as a "medical episode".

    It happened at about 01:05 on Queensbury Road in Boothtown.

    The condition of the driver is not known.

    The road's closed northbound from Ploughcroft Lane (Boothtown) to Swales Moor Road (Holmfield).

    At the moment, police say there are no plans for the recovery of the vehicle.

    It's thought the road is likely to be closed into the rush hour.

    A would-be thief has targeted a vehicle which was parked in, of all places, a police station car park.

    Tim Cook, who edits the Harrogate Informer, external website, left his car at the North Yorkshire town's station on Beckwith Head Road while he was carrying out an interview.

    But when he returned with Sgt Paul Cording to the car park at 21:00 on Wednesday, he said the window of his car had been smashed and a man was inside.

    Sgt Cording posted on Twitter: "I'm still stunned by this, you couldn't make it up!

    "I spend time with Tim talking all things drink-drive, return to the station and his car alarm is going off with a male sat in the passenger seat trying to steal it!

    "From the car park of the Police Station!!!"

    North Yorkshire Police said a man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of taking a motor vehicle and remains in custody.

    A man's due in court today charged with the murder of an 86-year-old woman in Bradford more than 20 years ago.

    Amy Shepherd was found dead at her sheltered housing home in Wibsey in August 1994.

    A post-mortem examination showed she had been strangled, stabbed and sexually assaulted.

    A small amount of cash had been taken from her purse.

    Raymond Kay, 70, of Baker Fold, Halifax, is due to appear before magistrates in Bradford later.

    The A647 Queensbury Road in Boothtown, Halifax, is currently closed northbound due to a "police incident".

    A 75-year-old woman had £1,000 taken out of an account after her bank card was stolen in a Waitrose car park.

    Police have now released a photograph of a man they want to speak to, in connection with the incident.

    The victim was in the car park of Waitrose, at Willerby near Hull, when a man with a Polish accent asked her for directions.

    Humberside Police say a second man opened her boot and stole her bank card which was then used to take out cash.

    Police have released a photograph of a man they want to speak to about the theft on Saturday 10 November.

    A man who killed a drug user by stamping on his head because he was "sick of seeing spice heads" has been jailed for life.

    Ricky Ramsden, 27, attacked 39-year-old Dawid Szubert as he lay unconscious on the floor in Barnsley town centre.

    He was found guilty at Sheffield Crown Court of what police described as a "brutal and callous" murder.

    Ramsden, of Dodworth Road, Barnsley (pictured above) was told he must serve a minimum of 17 years in jail.

    Mr Szubert, originally from Poland, had been living in Barnsley for two years when he was attacked on 17 June.

    The court heard on the day he died Mr Mr Szubert, a Polish national who had lived in Barnsley for approximately two years, had taken the drug spice and was unconscious.

    Handcuffs are among items worth £10,000 which thieves have stolen from Humberside Police in the past three years.

    Drills, mountain bikes and a hammer are also included in the list of items taken from the force between Feburary 2016 and September 2018.

    A Freedom of Information Act request revealed that, out of the 35 police items recorded as stolen, 15 have never been recovered.

    In a statement, Humberside Police said: "We take all reports of theft seriously including items that are stolen from police."

    A pair of women were held up at gunpoint in Scarborough by burglars wearing balaclavas.

    Police say two men, holding small black handguns, entered a property in the Crossgates area of the town.

    They shouted at two women who were in the property at the time, taking phones and car keys before leaving.

    North Yorkshire Police are appealing for information following the aggravated burglary at about 20:30 on 29 November.

    A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “This is an extremely concerning incident, and an extensive investigation is ongoing to identify those responsible.”
