    The Peugeot was followed by police officers near Malton, North Yorkshire, with a stinger device used to stop the car near York.

    Stingers are used to burst the tyres of vehicles.

    The driver was over the legal limit for alcohol, North Yorkshire Police said.

    The family of Bradley Lowery has been gifted land to build a holiday home for sick children in Scarborough, where they visited shortly before the six-year-old died.

    Scarborough Borough Council has agreed to lease land to the Bradley Lowery Foundation, which was set up in memory of the six-year-old who died in July 2017.

    One of his last family holidays was to Scarborough and now the charity has been given the land there for the home, on the condition it gets planning permission.

    Bradley was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when he was 18-months-old and made national news for his bravery and friendship with footballer Jermaine Defoe.

    An appeal has been launched to find the family of a 77-year-old who died at his home in Hull.

    Derek Heeson was found dead at his house on Freehold Street and police are now trying to find his relatives.

    Humberside Police say it's tried to find his family, since 23 November, but have "so far been unable to".

    Police say his death is not being treated as suspicious and believe he may have relatives in South Yorkshire.

    Fundraising for a statue commemorating Doncaster's pit history has reached its target after a last-gasp donation from the town's mayor Ros Jones.

    More than £131,000 was raised in five months for the public art which will celebrate "Doncaster’s rich mining heritage", according to the crowdfunding website.

    A final £16,000 personal donation from Mayor Ros Jones helped the target be reached.

    Two men have been arrested after a man was shot in Huddersfield last night.

    The victim, 21, was shot by two men while he was in his car on Walpole Road at about 22:00.

    The two suspects fled the scene but were arrested shortly after.

    The injured man is in a stable condition in hospital.

    Police are continuing their enquiries and a cordon remains in place in the area.

    Det Insp Mark Atkinson said: "Any firearms incident will cause some concern in our local communities, but I'd like to reassure members of the public we take these incidents extremely seriously."

    A Hull business has donated clothes to homeless people in the city, with staff also volunteering at a local soup kitchen.

    Arco, one of Hull's biggest employers, gives workers two days paid leave each year to volunteer in the community.

    This year, a team of 10 members of staff will be helping out at Raise the Roof, a homeless charity which typically feeds 100 people each week.

    Everyone who uses the service will also get a parcel containing fleeces, gloves and other items of clothing.

    Police in Leeds are urging local residents to avoid "unhelpful speculation" as specialist staff begin searching a building in Beeston.

    Officers are due to begin an operation at the premises on the junction of Dewsbury Road and Oakhurst Avenue after a cannabis factory was found there on 27 September.

    Several cannabis plants were removed for destruction during the raid but asbestos was then identified and the address was sealed off.

    Police say the building still needs to be fully searched and the potential risk presented by the asbestos is "beyond the standard safety equipment and training available to officers".

    Det Insp Phil Jackson says: "The health risks posed by exposed asbestos are very serious and we need to take all relevant precautions to ensure we can complete a search of the building in safety.

    "We recognise that this increased activity at the site could cause unhelpful speculation which is why we wanted to let people know what is happening."

    There are fears overcrowding could pose a safety risk at a Christmas market in York.

    Some residents commenting online have said the packed attraction in Parliament Street was "hell" at the weekend.

    Many expressed fears over safety, with one saying: "There is a real danger of crushing and people being trampled."

    Guildhall councillor Denise Craghill has said she likes the market's atmosphere, but thinks more consideration should be given to people with disabilities, pushchairs and young children.

    She added: "I do think that as a city we should look carefully at this for future years."

    Chris Price, head of markets at Make It York, said safety is the "utmost priority" and the layout of the fair was worked out with help from the fire service, police and council.

    Senior councillors have promised to review the situation, saying: "Based on the feedback we've received, we'll work to see how the Christmas market experience can be better improved."

    One in four allegations against teachers in East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire last year were deemed to be malicious, according to new research by the BBC.

    It's understood that more than 150 teachers in England and Wales fell victim to malicious or false pupil allegations last year.

    The National Education Union has said the allegations can end a teacher's career even if they're found to be false and more needs to be done to protect teachers.

    Young athletes who train at Woodburn Road stadium in Sheffield are celebrating success after being told the facilities will be opened up to them.

    Sheffield Hallam University, which runs the stadium, had decided to close the facility on Monday and Friday evenings for December and January because of low usage.

    But youngsters and parents hadn't been told, so they ended up training in the dark.

    Now the university has apologised and agreed to open up the stadium for evening training and to put the floodlights on in future.

    Iain Smith, who trains at Woodburn Road with his two children, says: "There are families, groups and many people who use the tracks, so it's extremely important.

    "Where's the next Jessica Ennis or Sebastian Coe or Nicola Adams going to come from if we don't have training facilities?"

    Did you see a red glow in the sky over the Humber last night? If you did, you weren't alone...

    Humberside Fire and Rescue Service received a high number of calls from concerned members of the public about the glowing sky.

    It was a fire, but nothing to be worried out. The big red glow was actually caused by a refinery burning off unusable waste gas.

    Crews said: "We have checked out the areas reported and following liaison with industrial partners this is a safe activity, albeit unusual. All is safe so sit back and enjoy the view."

    Football legend Paul Gascoigne is due to appear in court later charged with sexually assaulting a woman on a train from York to Durham.

    The 51-year-old former England midfielder was arrested at Durham station on 20 August.

    Mr Gascoigne shot to international fame during the 1990 World Cup.

    After leaving his hometown club Newcastle United in 1988, he enjoyed success at Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio and Rangers.

    A BTP spokeswoman said in November: "A man is due to appear in court next month charged in connection with the sexual assault of a woman on board a train from York to Durham.

    "Paul Gascoigne, of Amy Street, Leicester, was charged via postal requisition with one count of sexual assault by touching, contrary to Section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003."

    Officers believe the man has information about an incident on 27 November in which someone broke into the Tesco on Hilderthorpe Road and lit firelighters before leaving.

    Firefighters were quickly on the scene and put out the blaze and no-one was hurt in the incident.

    Anyone who knows the man pictured above, or who has any information about the incident, is asked to contact Humberside Police.

    Sheffield United fans have been urged to donate food to a local food bank to help feed families on the run-up to Christmas.

    From today until Friday, donations can be left at Bramall Lane's main reception or club shop.

    Food will then be donated to the S2 Foodbank, which is near to the ground.

    A man accused of murdering his mother's partner with the help of a friend acted in "self-defence", a court has heard.

    Rolandas Poskus, 52, was found dead on Dane Park Road, Hull, on 15 June.

    Giving evidence via an interpreter, Mantas Pundzius told Hull Crown Court he "lost self-control" after being struck on the head by Mr Poskus.

    Mr Pundzius, 24, and Stanislovas Bozys, 28, from Hull, both deny murder. Mr Pundzius's mother Janina Milieskiene denies assisting an offender.

    The court previously heard Mr Poskus had suffered 27 rib fractures, as well as severe injuries to his brain, body and organs.

    His semi-naked body was found in grassland by dog walkers.

    Prosecutors said Mr Poskus had been stamped on, kicked, thrown down stairs and hit by a blunt force weapon.

    The trial continues.

    A 15-year-old boy who's gone missing from his home in County Durham could be in North Yorkshire, police say.

    Jacques Malakai was last seen in Stockton on Saturday but officers say he could now be in York.

    The teenager was last seen wearing a light grey tracksuit.

    Anyone who sees him is being urged to contact the police.
