    A photographer taking snaps of large waves in Hornsea from a "dangerous position" sparked a emergency response from the local coastguard.

    The photographer was spotted shooting "over topping waves" in the town and a member of the public alerted HM Coastguard Hornsea.

    A team were scrambled to the scene but the photographer had left by the time they arrived last night.

    They conducted a search and remained at the seafront "until any possible dangers had subsided".

    Doncaster Council will hand over a six-figure sum to Sports Direct billionaire owner Mike Ashley over fears a prominent town centre unit would be left empty.

    High-end clothing retailer Flannels, part of Mr Ashley's empire, will be handed £125,000 in business rates "help" by council bosses amid concerns the former pub and nightclub unit would be left derelict.

    Doncaster Council agreed the funding to Flannels over the "derelict" site at Priory Walk, formerly the Walkabout bar, despite the fashion chain turning over £62m last year making a £5m in profit.

    Council bosses said if Doncaster is to survive as a "vibrant town centre" it has to find "innovative ways to attract business".

    A Hull MP is demanding a meeting with a travel company over the "embarrassing" number of trains which have been cancelled.

    Diana Johnson wants to meet with Hull Trains' parent company First Group, after several passengers' travel plans were disrupted over the weekend.

    She said: "This is not the way a modern train operator should be providing a service to the people of Hull."

    Hull Trains have posted on Twitter apologising to passengers for the inconvenience caused by cancellations over the past few days.

    A woman driving a Peugeot was hit from behind at about 02:00 on the M18 near junction one with Bramley.

    The white Mercedes E220 then ended up off the road with the driver reportedly leaving the crash.

    The Peugeot 207 driver was taken to hospital with head injuries.

    South Yorkshire Police is appealing for information.

    The comic, known by locals as George, says he comes up with gags while driving to Hull from the parcel depot in Doncaster.

    The next step of a £112m flood scheme for Leeds is moving a step closer today.

    Leeds City Council has submitted a planning application for the next phase of the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme, external, which was started in 2014 and covers three miles of riverbank from Leeds railway station to Kirkstall.

    The second stage would see £112m spent on more measures along the River Aire and extend the scheme to Calverley.

    This would be accompanied by flood defence walls and embankments as well as water storage areas in Calverley, including a moveable weir (pictured in the sketch below) to control water flow.

    It's hoped the work will protect the city from the type of floods caused by Storm Eva in 2015.

    During that time, more than 3,300 properties in Leeds were flooded at a cost of £36.8m.

    If approved, the work is expected to begin next summer.

    An 85-year-old woman has died after being involved in a collision with a police van in Doncaster.

    The crash happened at about 13:55 yesterday when a red Nissan Micra and a police van collided at the junction of Herten Way and Gliwice Way.

    Three police officers sustained minor injuries in the incident.

    South Yorkshire Police has referred the incident to the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

    Anyone who witnessed the collision is being asked to contact police.

    A man has suffered serious chest injuries after his car collided with a lamp post in Bradford.

    The crash happened on the A647 at about 05:30 yesterday morning when a silver Vauxhall Corsa struck a lamp post at the junction with Great Horton Road.

    A man in his thirties suffered serious chest injuries and was taken to hospital.

    Police want to speak to anyone with information about the incident.

    A review of courses on offer at Hull University could see students unable to study some foreign languages there, it's emerged.

    The university is in the process of examining its modern languages offering and says there is a possibility it will stop recruiting onto some courses next year.

    Current students will not be affected by the review which "is ongoing and no decision has been made as yet", the university says.

    Jeannette Strachan, university registrar and secretary, said: "We are absolutely committed to ensuring our students have the best student experience until they complete their studies. "

    A collection of festive toy favourites have gone on show at one of Leeds' most loved historic houses.

    The Christmas Past exhibition is an exploration of how festive celebrations have evolved over the past 500 years.

    Exhibits include Victorian games, bionic-based board games from the 1970s and iconic TV series interpretations from the past century.

    Leila Prescott, curator at Temple Newsam, said: "Each of these toys will have meant something special to their owner. Each has been collected or played with over different generations and they will all have happy memories attached to them."

    The event runs until 23 December.

    The Rugby League World Cup trophy is on display in Sheffield this week as part of the city's celebrations to back its bid to become a host venue for the tournament in 2021.

    Sheffield has been shortlisted to the final 24 cities and towns which could be selected to host the global event in three years time.

    The Paul Barriere Trophy, otherwise known as the Rugby League World Cup, will be on display at Sheffield Town Hall from today until Friday.

    A decision on which host cities have been chosen is expected in January 2019.

    From today, vehicles can no longer be driven through an ancient gateway to leave York.

    It's hoped the change to traffic going under Micklegate Bar, being trialled for 18 months, will help protect the historic gateway,

    Drivers can still go through the Bar to enter the city.

    The ancient gateway was the most important of York’s four main medieval forts - reigning monarchs stop at it to ask the Lord Mayor's permission to enter the city.

    The lower section of the bar dates from the 12th century, the top two storeys from the 14th.

    For centuries the severed heads of rebels and traitors were displayed above the gate.

    The last of the severed heads was removed in 1754.

    A man has admitted causing the deaths of four people, including that of a one-year-old boy, after a crash in Sheffield last month

    Elliott Bower, 18, has admitted causing death by dangerous driving after driving a VW Golf which crashed into a people carrier in Darnall last month.

    The VW Golf was being pursued by police at the time,

    Adnan Ashraf Jarral, 35, died along with his son Muhammed Usman Bin Adnan and a married couple - Vlasta Dunova, 41, and Miroslav Duna, 50.

    Mr Bower pleaded guilty to four counts of causing death by dangerous driving and other offences at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday.

    He appeared alongside his brother Declan Bower, 23, and a 17-year-old boy, who each pleaded guilty to offences including aggravated vehicle taking.

    All three defendants will be sentenced on 28 January.

    Ronnie O'Sullivan won a record breaking seventh UK Championship title at the Barbican last night.

    Ivan Hirschowitz from World Snooker says: " Even in the first few days this year, before the television coverage started, we had really good crowds.

    "Tickets for next year went on sale yesterday and already we've sold 5,000 tickets."
