    A piece of silverwork has been created by a female Sheffield artist to celebrate 100 years since some women were able to vote for the first time.

    Some women were able to vote on 14 December 1918 in a general election.

    To mark this occasion, local artist Jessica Flinn unveiled the work and it will be displayed in the Silver Room of Sheffield Town Hall.

    Sheffield City Council invited women from across the region to see the new work and to celebrate early female politicians who stood as candidates across the city.

    A Normandy veteran from Leeds has been presented with the highest French medal of honour, 75 years after he served in the aftermath of D-Day.

    Eric Lawson, 93, served at Gold Beach with the 2nd Battalion of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps in 1944.

    Eric's son, Roger, said: "He would rarely talk about his experiences but after wading ashore they pushed on towards Caens and met significant German resistance, and he told me he could hear men screaming inside burning tanks."

    He was 18-years-old at the time.

    Eric was awarded the Légion d’honneur medal, but was unable to attend the ceremony at the time, so it was sent to him in a jiffy bag.

    A repairman for Royal British Legion, Paul Bird, got talking to the veteran and wanted to help.

    He contacted several organisations and another ceremony was arranged.

    Dep Lt of West Yorkshire, Maj Stanley Hardy presented the award.

    He said: “Our generation owes your generation a huge debt of gratitude – it’s a debt we can never, ever repay.

    "Thank you for who you are, thank you for what you did.”

    Eric is still a strong supporter of Leeds Football Club.

    A 74-year-old with breathing difficulties suffered burns after his oxygen bag was set on fire while he was delivering Christmas cards in Hull.

    The elderly victim was walking along Hurley Close when two teenagers rode past on bikes, allegedly flicking a cigarette at him.

    This reportedly caused his breathing apparatus to burst into flame, leaving him with burns to his face, inside his nose and mouth, and on his back.

    It is thought a man and woman stopped to help him after the incident, said to have happened between 16:00 and 18:00 on Sunday.

    Humberside Police are trying to identify them and are appealing with anyone with information to get in touch

    A "wanted man" is being hunted by police in Harrogate, after being recalled to prison for breaching the terms of his release.

    North Yorkshire Police say Thomas Graham Fallon, 25, failed to attend appointments with the probation service.

    Officers are looking for him in Harrogate, where Fallon is from, as well as Batley, where he also has links.

    Police officers in Barnsley are trying to find a motorbike rider who punched an officer and then drove a bike at them.

    On Friday police tried to speak to the rider in the town centre at about 14:00 but the rider punched an officer in the face and drove off.

    Another officer tried to stop the rider but he was driven at and injured.

    The rider was seen on Harborough Hills and then in Royston, where they also failed to stop for police.

    Pictures from the in-car camera have been released to try and find out who the motorbike rider is.

    A prisoner out on licence is being hunted by police in Harrogate after breaching the conditions of his release.

    Dean Brian Auton, 35, was sentenced at York Magistrates Court to 28 days in prison for theft and served about half of his sentence behind bars.

    Police say that after he was released on licence, from HMP Hull, he failed to attend appointments with his supervising probation officer, failed to reside at an approved address, and displayed poor behaviour.

    North Yorkshire Police say Auton has now been recalled to custody after having his licence revoke earlier this month.

    Officers are now searching for Auton who is said to have connections to Harrogate, as well as Harringay, London.

    The Lake District should become a destination of choice for high-tech businesses, Cumbria Chamber of Commerce has suggested.

    The chamber was contributing to a review of the future management of national parks, which is out for consultation ending today.

    In a 12-point submission, external, Rob Johnston, the chamber's chief executive, said parks should be given the duty to development the economy, with a streamlined planning system, but also with second-home ownership discouraged.

    He said much of the employment was currently in low-pay areas such as hospitality, but that could be changed by bringing in a wider selection of businesses.

    A driver was caught by police after trying to evade officers by hiding in a cul-de-sac in Bridlington.

    Humberside Police said the motorist was stopped on suspicion of driving while disqualified and without insurance.

    A businessman from Barnsley is keeping the dream alive to break the land speed record with a 1,000mph car.

    Ian Warhurst stepped in to buy the Bloodhound supersonic car business last week after seeing a news article about it going into administration.

    The mechanical engineer took his sons to see the project in Birmingham, before then finding out they were to stop the record attempt.

    Within a week of being told about the company going into administration he had bought the company.

    "Wherever we go next I'm sure to be quite excited because the project itself is so exciting," Mr Warhurst told the BBC.

    "I still can't believe that I'm going to be involved in it to be honest."

    The Bristol project has so far cost £30m.

    The trampolinist's home was broken into yesterday, with a special Olympic edition Samsung S7 being stolen.

    A fire in a Sheffield block of flats has been brought under control, according to the fire service.

    Emergency services were called to the Ponderosa flats on Martin Street this morning.

    Tram services were stopped to allow ambulances onto the premises.

    The line between Cathedral and Shalesmoor is still suspended.

    Humberside Police executed warrants at a business on Ropery Street and a property on Abbey Way, taking away drugs for further tests.

    Officers arrested one man who is being held on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs and money laundering.

    A storm in a teacup appears to be brewing over new 'eco-friendly' Yorkshire Tea teabags.

    Apparently they're splitting in hot water, an issue that's made a national newspaper today.

    Dom Dwight is Marketing Director at Taylors of Harrogate, which makes Yorkshire Tea.

    He's says the new biodegradable bags no longer rely on plastic to stay sealed, but the new plant-based substance being used instead, hasn't been able to withstand hot water.

    Mr Dwight said: "For anyone who has experienced a less than perfect brew I'd like to apologise.

    "We're aware of a problem and are investigating."

    People who want to have a say on how Cumbria's most attractive landscapes should be conserved in the coming years must send in their comments by today.

    An independent review into English National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, external, or AONBs, will look at whether they should change to be more effective in the 21st Century.

    Cumbria's got two national parks, the Lake District and, in spite of its name, a large part of the Yorkshire Dales.

    It also includes three AONBs, covering the North Pennine fells, the Solway Coast, and the landscape near Arnside in South Cumbria.

    Two live kittens were zipped inside a red bag, according to a man who found them in Sheffield.

    Neil Hawksworth says he found and then freed the animals in Bowden Woods near Handsworth.

    The dogwalker found the bag this morning zipped up, but the kittens ran away shortly after being freed.

    The health of the cats isn't known, but Mr Hawksworth said the bag had been "freshly dumped".

    A man was seriously injured when he was attacked with a hammer in Leeds last night.

    The 21-year-old victim was pulled out of his car on Latchmere Avenue by a number of suspects at about 22:50.

    He was attacked with a hammer numerous times and suffered head and leg injuries. He remains in a serious condition in hospital.

    Police are urging anyone who saw the incident, or has information, to get in touch immediately.

    Scientists at the University of Hull are trying to make a new biodegradable plastic as part of a £1.1m project.

    A team of more than 25 academics will work with businesses, supermarkets, local authorities and recycling companies to try and make plastics more sustainable.

    The money for the project has come through a new fund to reduce the environmental harm caused by plastics, which was announced by the science minister earlier this year.
