    A man's due back in court later, charged with the murder of a 24-year-old woman at a block of flats in Leeds.

    Officers were called to the flats at Richmond Hill by an ambulance crew treating Poppy Devey-Waterhouse at about 08:35 on Friday, but she was declared dead at the scene.

    Joe Atkinson, 25, of The Avenue, Richmond Hill, appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court on Monday.

    He'll appear before Leeds Crown Court today.

    Transport systems in South Yorkshire are "not fit for purpose" and will be reviewed, according to the Labour mayor of Sheffield City Region.

    Dan Jarvis' 10 commitments for his transport strategy were signed off by council leaders from the county at a meeting yesterday.

    A review of the bus network across South Yorkshire will be carried out to see if services can be improved, Mr Jarvis has pledged.

    His other nine commitments include investing in the expansion of trams and the tram-train, improving accessibility for isolated residents, road investment, improving rail connections to places like Leeds and Manchester and putting pedestrians and cyclists "at the centre" of any plan.

    In documents presented to council leaders, Mr Jarvis said: "Most people think our current systems are not fit for purpose and what we've agreed is a plan that we can all rally around to improve them over the coming months and years."

    The driver was uninjured, according to police.

    Two men are due to appear in court later charged in connection with a North Yorkshire car crash earlier this year in which two teenagers died.

    Seven others, including two children, were taken to hospital after the three-vehicle crash on the A61 near Thirsk in March.

    A 23-year-old man from Sowerby faces two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and five of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

    The second man, an 18-year-old from Thirsk, is charged with one count of dangerous driving.

    The men are due before Northallerton magistrates this afternoon.

    A second hotel in Hull has stepped in to offer 28 homeless people rooms over Christmas after their previous booking by a homeless project was cancelled.

    The group had been due to stay at the Royal Hotel in Hull but were then told they could not, prompting an outcry.

    A hotel spokesperson later said staff had been told about damage to rooms by the group at an Ibis hotel last Christmas.

    Raise the Roof Hull Homeless Project says the allegations are "lies" and Ibis denies the claim.

    Reacting to the offer by the Doubletree Hilton, which also includes Christmas dinner, Carl Simpson, from the project, said: "Who says miracles don't happen?"

    He told the BBC the group had originally booked 14 twin rooms for 28 people for £1,092, hoping to build on the success of last year's event at the Ibis.

    Hull coastguard had their hands full when a cargo vessel got into trouble on Saturday evening.

    The 11-man-ship, Thea II, grounded off Spurn Point following Storm Deirdre.

    Rescue crews were ready to evacuate, but were later stood down.

    The ship is now safe in King George Docks.

    Three men armed with knives robbed cigarettes and cash from a shop in Leeds.

    The suspects targeted the Co-op store, Selby Road on Sunday at about 20:00.

    The men had their faces covered and were wearing gloves.

    Staff were threatened by the men, then they filled a bed sheet with cash and cigarettes.

    The men drove off in black Seat Altea car.

    Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or seen any suspicious behaviour to come forward.

    A group of men in fancy dress are asked to get in touch with police after a fight at Catterick Garrison which left a man seriously injured.

    North Yorkshire Police believe the group may have "important information" about the incident, outside Louis bar on Kitchener Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

    One man was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, for treatment while a 22-year-old who was arrested by police has been released under investigation.

    A DNA "tag and trace" scheme on bottles and cans of alcohol is to be extended.

    Recorded street offences have been cut by 60 percent in Wakefield city centre since the scheme started, police say.

    Officers tag cans of high-strength alcohol which can be tracked back to the particular store it was bought from.

    Police then speak to the retailer about how they can help.

    The Wakefield Business Improvement District has pledged to continue funding the initiative into 2019.

    Humberside Police say a man, aged 32, and a woman, aged 24, have been arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs with intent to supply.

    The speed limit on the Parkway link road between Sheffield and the M1 is expected to be slashed as part of a package of measures to improve air quality in the area.

    Officials have been set the task of reducing nitrogen dioxide levels by 8% along the dual carriageway, which straddles Sheffield and Rotherham.

    Both authorities were tasked with working together on a plan to improve air quality around the route and the answer they have found is to increase its capacity around the M1 junction but also to cut the speed limit from 70mph to 50mph.

    The plans have to go back to the government for approval, but would form part of a wider package of measures in Rotherham to improve several areas with poor air quality.

    It's been confirmed that a body found on the island of Tenerife earlier this month is that of the former University of Lincoln student Amy Gerard.

    The 28-year-old, originally from Cleethorpes, was reported missing last month after leaving an Irish bar in Puerto de la Cruz.

    She had been working at the island's Loro Parque marine zoo.

    The charity The Lucie Blackman Trust said it was "saddened to announce" DNA testing results had confirmed the body was Ms Gerard's.

    Her sister Chloe, from Sheffield, had flown out to the island to help find her earlier this month.

    Three men from Bradford who police believe handled and disposed of more than £1m of stolen cars have been jailed.

    Siyavash Omidifa, Pawel Wach and Marc Holton were found guilty of conspiracy to handle stolen goods.

    Police discovered vehicle parts belonging to 69 stolen cars in Chapel Green Works in 2016.

    The vehicles were taken to the unit, where they were then dismantled and sold or exchanged for cash.

    Most cars were stolen from the Bradford area.
