  6. Memorial to last deep coal mine delayedpublished at 11:25 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

A memorial to all those who worked at Yorkshire's last deep coal mine has been delayed, but will go ahead.

    Miners

The general secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers has been talking on the third anniversary of the closure of Kellingley, near Pontefract.

The colliery's closure on 18 December 2015 marked the end of deep-pit coal mining in Britain.

Production began at Kellingley in April 1965 and, at its height, the pit employed more than 2,000 workers.

The NUM's Chris Kitchen says there are a number of reasons why there's no permanent reminder of the pit's closure.

He says: "We're trying to secure permission to place a memorial at the entrance to the colliery."

Mr Kitchen says if that's obtained then it's a case of "trying to fundraise for a more permanent structure to mark where the pit was."

Possible changes to a route used by thousands of walkers are due to be discussed by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority later.

    Three Peaks sign

The Yorkshire Three Peaks is a circular walking route which takes in Pen-y-Ghent at 2,277ft, Whernside (2,414ft) and Ingleborough (2,372ft).

About 100,000 walkers use the 24-mile route every year and it's become so popular that some of the paths are being badly eroded.

Some people living on the route have complained about problems with noise and traffic congestion, but many in the tourism industry say walkers are welcome.

The proposed changes include alternative start points and routes, and a scheme to help people plan their visit will also be considered.

  16. Decision day for Barnsley's Penny Pie Parkpublished at 09:06 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

A decision is due to be made later over plans to build a new road through a park in Barnsley.

    Penny Pie ParkImage source, Google

Thousands of people signed a petition to save Penny Pie Park, but councillors are being recommended to approve the plans for Dodworth Road, between junction 37 of the M1 and Barnsley town centre.

Barnsley Council's plans have been criticised by campaigners after about £174,000 was allocated to improve the area after it won two awards.

Some of the work, which had been funded by the awards, was stopped before being finished when the new gyratory system was announced.

Campaigners say the new road will turn the park into a roundabout, but council officers say the multi-lane one-way system, will relieve congestion.

Members of the town's planning committee will visit the site again this morning before making a decision later this afternoon.

  19. Staff shortages affect council planning servicespublished at 08:24 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Sheffield's planning enforcement team is under "extreme pressure" as it struggles to cope with fewer and less experienced officers.

    Houses being built

The city council failed to hit its targets on planning enforcement from April to September because of staff shortages.

The number of notices served and prosecutions carried out has also dropped, but the service says it's still responding effectively to the most serious breaches of planning control.

Officers take action if developers breach planning permission, if buildings or structures are put up without consent or if there are untidy sites.

They can investigate, issue stop notices and ultimately prosecute.

  20. Humberside police officer asked to be sectionedpublished at 08:06 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2018

A Humberside police officer begged mental health workers to treat her for depression just before she died, a coroner's inquest has heard.

Prince Charles and PC Sharon Houfe

PC Sharon Houfe had told mental health teams: "I'm going to end my life, I need to be put away." She was found dead at her home in Hull just a few days later.

The hearing, at Hull Coroner's Court, was told how her family had phoned the crisis team begging for her to be sectioned and taken into care.

Dr Robert Kehoe told the inquest it wasn't unusual for people to say they wanted to take their own life, but added: "The fact she wanted to be put away should have raised alarm bells and the likelihood was that she would have accepted an admission to hospital."

The inquest was told Ms Houfe had been seen, or assessed at least four times in the days before her death by different mental health nurses.

On one occasion she had turned up for an appointment but the nurse did not carry out an assessment as she had undergone one a few days earlier. Instead, they had a conversation in a corridor.

Ms Houfe was recognised for her work tackling hate crime in the new year's honours list in 2014, being awarded a MBE.

    The inquest continues.
