    A man suffered head injuries after fighting off burglars, one of whom hit him with a baseball bat.

    Police in Bradford would like to speak to anyone who has information about the attempted aggravated burglary at about 10:30 yesterday on Beesha Avenue in Low Moor, Bradford.

    Two men knocked on the door and attempted to force their way in as the door was opened.

    They hit the male householder with a baseball bat while demanding money.

    He forced them out of his home but was left with head injuries and needed hospital treatment.

    The leader of Barnsley Council says a Brexit deal must be reached to give councils greater certainty over their funding.

    A major review of the way councils are financed is due to be carried out next year, but Sir Steve Houghton says councils are getting very little information because of the question mark over what Brexit will look like.

    He says the council is having to put what it can into reserves "just in case".

    "Just as the uncertainty isn't helping businesses, it's not helping local authorities either," he said.

    "People still want their dustbins emptied.

    "They're wanting their old people looking after.

    "This means government needs to make sure the money is there. That means there needs to be some kind of Brexit deal."

    Police are investigating two shooting incidents in the space of two days on the streets of Huddersfield.

    In the first incident a gun was fired at a property on Scott Vale at about 20:45 on Saturday 29 December.

    The second incident happened on Birkby Hall Road at about 14:50 yesterday.

    A member of the public reported hearing a loud bang in the area close to a hairdressing salon and armed police attended.

    A short while later a 24-year-old man was treated at hospital for a non-life threatening injury to his back.

    Three males, aged 16, 17 and 19, have been arrested in connection with the incident on Birkby Hall Road.

    A 62-year-old woman was mauled and her pet dog fatally savaged earlier today by an Akita in Castleford.

    Police are now trying to find the owner of the Akita which was running loose when the attack happened at 11:10 on Watling Road.

    The large, beige-coloured canine attacked one of the victim's two dogs and bit two of her fingers.

    Police attended and seized the Akita.

    The victim’s dog was taken to the vets but has since passed away.

    A man who died after an assault on Boxing Day in Leeds has been named as Maksym Polomka.

    Police have also revealed that a second person has been charged in connection with the death.

    Mr Polomka, 30, was a Polish national living in Beeston.

    He was pronounced dead in hospital after being seriously injured in a disturbance in Robb Street, Beeston, in the early hours of Wednesday 26 December.

    Pawel Stragowski, aged 27, of Coleshill Way, Bradford, is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates Court tomorrow charged with murder.

    A 31-year-old man, who was also arrested on Saturday, will face no charge.

    Tomasz Dybicz, aged 29, from Beeston, has already appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court charged with murder.

    A driver who wrote off a car they'd just bought was arrested for drink-driving, according to South Yorkshire Police.

    The bright yellow Seat collided with a wall in Chapeltown, Sheffield yesterday.

    Officers said the driver bought the car on Saturday and "tried showing off" before the crash.

    The driver provided a breath sample which was three times over the legal limit, the force added:

    An 18-year-old woman who died after she was hit by a car in Doncaster has been named as Shannon Lewis.

    Officers are still appealing for witnesses to the fatal accident which happened on Wood Street on Saturday 15 December around 16:30 near Yates' Bar.

    A black Volkswagen Scirocco was driving along Wood Street, from Cleveland Street, towards Waterdale, when it collided with the teenager who was believed to have been crossing the road at the time.

    She died the following day at Northern General Hospital.

    The project, which is based in Attercliffe, has helped more than 400 people since it started, according to the charity.
