    A 4-year-old child was abandoned by a Bradford road after thieves stole the car she was sitting inside.

    The girl was in a car seat in a parked blue Vauxhall Zafira on Necropolis Road at about 12:55 on 6 January.

    The vehicle, with a registration starting BD56, was then stolen and stopped on Birks Avenue.

    The child was taken from the seat and left on the side of the road.

    A member of the public found her and returned her to her family.

    Det Con Ken Robinson said: “This was clearly a hugely distressing incident though for the child and her family and we are still working to trace the stolen vehicle and identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice."

    Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to get in touch.

    Three pensioners have died within 24 hours, following house fires in West Yorkshire over the weekend.

    Investigations into three separate deaths have been launched, but all are believed to be accidental, according to the fire service. , external

    The first fire happened at a two-storey building on Akroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge at 12:20 on 4 January.

    A 70-year-old man was found dead in the property.

    On the same day, crews were called to a bungalow on Deighton Road, Huddersfield at about 17:00.

    A woman in her 80s suffered burns and later died.

    In the third incident, a fire started in a bedroom in a house on Skipton Avenue, Huddersfield at about 11:45 on 5 January.

    A woman in her 80s died later in hospital.

    Det Ch Dave Walton said: “Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the people who have sadly lost their lives in what we believe to be three tragic accidents.

    “In each instance the attending firefighters did everything possible to tackle the fire and save the occupants."

    A naked man with a "beer belly" is wanted by police after exposing himself to a woman on Harrogate Stray.

    The woman was on her own at the time of the indecent exposure, in the Tewit Well area of The Stray, with police looking for the naked man with a black baseball cap.

    North Yorkshire Police are trying to identify the man, who is described as white, between 50 and 60 years old with a hairy chest and facial stubble.

    Officers say they are trying to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident at 20:00 on 2 January.

    The future of an East Yorkshire scouts group, which was threatened by closure, has been secured.

    Molescroft Scouts has met at Longcroft Lower School since the 1970s but the council is selling the site for housing.

    Following talks, East Riding Council has agreed to move both the scouts and Beverley Air Training Corps, into Longcroft Upper School.

    A lucky lottery ticket that was bought in North Yorkshire, remains unclaimed with just a month left for the winner to come forward.

    The EuroMillions ticket was bought in the Hambleton District, netting the winner almost £97,000.

    But since the draw on 10 August, nobody has come forward.

    The winning numbers were 18, 20, 36, 43, 44 and the Lucky Star numbers were 3 and 9, with the missing winner having matched the five main numbers and one Lucky Star number.

    If the ticket remains unclaimed by 6 February, the money plus interest will be given to local North Yorkshire causes.

    A mum has been awarded compensation after Sheffield City Council failed to arrange a secondary school place for her son.

    The unnamed parent - known as Mrs X - complained to the Local Government Ombudsman that the council had delayed finalising her son's education and healthcare plan and had delayed allocating a secondary school place for him.

    She also complained about poor communication and said the council hadn't handled her complaints effectively between September 2015 and October 2017.

    The Ombudsman agreed the council was at fault and ordered it to pay Mrs X £1,500 for the injustice caused.

    In a report,, external the council said it would apologise to Mrs X and will pay compensation.

    It has also made changes to its processes to prevent similar faults happening again.

    Officers have released a CCTV image of the man they want to identify in connection with incidents in the Anlaby area of the city.

    The picture was taken in the Morrisons store on Springfield Way at about 16:00 on January 1 when "a quantity" of spirits were taken.

  16. Laser pen shone at police chopper looking for missing girlpublished at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2019

    A police helicopter was "persistently" targeted with a laser pen while looking for a missing girl in East Yorkshire over the weekend.

    The crew of the helicopter were left "dazzled" while assisting with a search in Bridlington and the surrounding area on Saturday.

    The girl was eventually found safe and Humberside Police are now trying to find a suspect who fired the laser from the ground.

    The force are investigating the "very serious incident" and are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

    In a statement it said "luckily on this occasion there was no substantial impact on the helicopter," which had been dispatched from Carr Gate in Wakefield.

    The person responsible could be jailed for up to five years under the Laser Misuse (Vehicles) Bill which was passed in December 2017.

    Scarborough borough councillors are being called on to declare a "climate emergency."

    It's part of a motion proposed by two Green Party councillors.

    Dilys Cluer and Mark Vesey say all governments - national, regional and local - "have a duty to limit the impact of climate change."

    The two councillors say it "shouldn't just be down to individuals."

    They're calling on Scarborough Borough council "to do everything within its powers" to make the East Coast carbon neutral by 2030.

    A swan has been shot with an air rifle near a canal in Shipley, according to a rescue charity.

    Yorkshire Swan and Rescue found the injured swan off the Leeds & Liverpool Canal on 29 December.

    The swan is recovering following treatment.

    More than 2,000 emergency calls were made on New Year's Eve to West Yorkshire Police, an increase of 23% compared to last year.

    Police have praised colleagues at the contact centre, who dealt with 2,030 requests to the 999 number.

    All calls were handled, including 97 'pocket dials', according to the force.

    Tom Donohoe, West Yorkshire Police said: “Despite this demand for service our call handlers coped extremely well.

    "They are some of the ‘unsung heroes’ of the Force – they are usually the first person someone speaks to when they are facing a terrible time in their life.

    “I want to take this opportunity on behalf of the Senior Leadership Team to thank them for their work throughout 2018."
