    A man who was chased by a police helicopter following the theft of three Rolex watches from a shop in York has been arrested.

    The 27-year-old from Rochdale was tracked down following a chase along the A63 and A1 at the weekend.

    He's been charged with theft from a shop, failing to stop and driving a motor vehicle dangerously.

    He is due to appear at York Magistrates’ Court on Monday 25 February.

    A teenager with a fire "obsession" has been detained for starting a blaze that engulfed a four-storey mill causing £500,000 worth of damage.

    Eighty firefighters tackled the fire on Rebecca Street, Bradford, in December 2017, the city's crown court heard.

    Hamza Nadeem, then aged 18, told a hostel worker he was annoyed with lawyers who had an office there.

    Nadeem was sentenced to four years in a young offenders institution and four years on extended licence.

    The hostel worker contacted the police when he later saw media coverage of the huge blaze, and last June Nadeem, now aged 19, was found guilty of arson by a jury.

    The judge, Recorder Simon Eckersley, noted that Nadeem's mother had expressed concern about his "obsession with fire and fire-starting" as long ago as 2007 and the teenager himself had reported setting fires previously.

    York finds out later if it's to become a host of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

    The city's bid to host games at its new community stadium, currently under construction and due to be finished in summer this year.

    When the venue is complete it'll be the home of York City Knights and York City football club..

    The Rugby League World Cup takes place between October and November in 2021 and will include both the men's and women’s competition and the wheelchair rugby world cup.

    Officers investigating the disappearance of 16-year-old Pamela Horvathova from Sheffield have made a direct appeal to the teenager to make contact.

    Pamela was reported missing on Christmas Eve and was last seen on 19 December 2018 at iceSheffield.

    Appeals have been made on Slovakian TV and a Roma advisor is supporting the police investigation.

    Superintendent Paul McCurry made the appeal at a community event at Fir Vale School in Sheffield last night, where he also spoke to over 300 people from the Roma Slovak community.

    Supt McCurry said: “Today I want to make a direct appeal to Pamela, who we have now been searching for, for over a month.

    “Pamela, we are here to help you and support you. I know it may feel difficult to talk to someone at the moment, but my officers and I are here to listen.

    “I am asking you to let us know where you are, let us see you for ourselves and then all of this can stop."

    He also thanked the local community after a series of meetings and services in Fir Vale over the weekend, which hundreds of people attended.

    A Hull woman who has spent the last year in an Egyptian jail says she's looking forward to getting her life back to normal after being freed.

    Laura Plummer was released from prison and is expected to arrive back in the UK later.

    She was sentenced to three years in prison on 26 December 2017 for taking 290 Tramadol tablets into the country. She denied knowing the drug was banned.

    She's told the Sun Newspaper , externalshe just wanted to "get home, have a long bath and get into her own bed".

    Ms Plummer's local MP, Karl Turner, tweeted he was "delighted" Ms Plummer had been released alongside 6,929 other prisoners.

    A mystery lottery winner in North Yorkshire has little more than a week to come forward and claim a prize of almost £100,000.

    Someone in the district of Hambleton has a lucky ticket worth £96,827.80, after matching five numbers and a lucky star in the draw on 10 August.

    They have until Wednesday 6 February to come forward or the prize money, and all the interest it has generated, will go to help National Lottery-funded projects across the UK.

    A prisoner was taken to hospital after starting a fire in a cell at HMP Hull earlier today, it's been confirmed.

    The inmate set a "small fire" in the cell, with Humberside Fire and Rescue Service called to the scene.

    Staff managed to extinguish it before the fire service arrived and the prisoner was taken to hospital as a precaution.

    One of the main routes into a town in North Yorkshire is to be closed for three weeks.

    Work to replace the decking on a swing bridge which carries the A19 over the River Ouse at Selby is scheduled to begin on Sunday 3 February.

    The work on the structure, known locally as the "toll bridge", is scheduled to be complete within three weeks, but according to the county council is dependent on weather conditions and "any unforeseen defects below the timber deck boards".

    County Councillor Don Mackenzie said: "We will replace all the surface timber, waterproof the timber below the deck and carry out other essential maintenance."

    In September 1991, tolls were abolished after the bridge was purchased by Selby District Council and North Yorkshire County Council, putting an end to long queues of motorists lining up to pay the toll.

    In 2004, the Selby bypass opened, providing an alternative route over the River Ouse and easing congestion on the bridge.

    The manager of Morrisons, which is based in Bradford, is among a group of supermarket chiefs warning of the effects of a no-deal Brexit.

    In a statement, the supermarket bosses said: "We fear a significant disruption as a result if there is no Brexit deal."

    They gave examples of fruit and vegetables which would be hard to import at the end of March, when Brexit is scheduled to happen.

    Morrisons said 90% of lettuces, 80% tomatoes, 70% of soft fruits comes from the EU in Spring.

    The government has not responded to the letter which comes after a report from MPs on the Exiting the EU Committee said the government must rule out a no-deal Brexit.

    Firefighters in South Yorkshire have been learning sign language to help communicate with deaf people in an emergency.

    It's hope that teaching key phrases like "how many people are in the house" in British Sign Language means South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue can deal with a fire or emergency more effectively.

    More top athletes are expected to visit the city of Hull after a deal struck today with the Olympic team.

    It's been announced the University of Hull is to become an official partner of Team GB, the first in the country to become an official partner of the squad.

    The deal covers a six-year period and includes the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

    Dr David Richards, the University's Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, says: "We'll have Olympic athletes coming to the university, mentoring, coaching and career opportunities for students, as well as research projects and new courses."
