  4. Council that 'misled' residents about trees to apologisepublished at 12:56 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2019

Sheffield City Council will apologise to local residents for misleading them about why a much-loved tree was set to be felled.

    A treeImage source, PA

The council told two Totley residents inspections of an alder tree showed it needed to come down, when in fact reports showed the opposite.

The ombudsman, who's role is to investigate complaints made against councils, demanded the apology.

Sheffield City Council said it will "undertake the agreed actions" and "consider whether any lessons can be learnt as a result".

Thousands of trees have been felled in Sheffield since the start of a £2.2bn 25-year programme of works, having been assessed as either dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory.

They are being replaced with saplings.

However, many of the trees classed as damaging or discriminatory are healthy specimens which should not be cut down but saved, say campaigners.

They say amendments should be made to surrounding pavements and roads.

Meadow Foods, which makes chocolate crumb, says it's "disappointed" workers are going on strike.

In a statement, the company said: "Meadow Foods has no history of industrial action and for more than 10 years has paid increases well above inflation and competitors.
