  19. West Yorkshire has most cases of online grooming - NSPCCpublished at 10:05 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2019

West Yorkshire saw the highest number of online grooming cases reported in an 18 month period in England and Wales, according to a national children's charity.

A total of 147 offences were recorded by West Yorkshire Police in the 18 months to September 2018, according to the NSPCC.

The charity found more than 5,000 online grooming offences were recorded by police in England and Wales during that one-and-a-half-year period.

Police figures suggest Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat had been used in 70% of cases of sexual communication with a child since it became an offence in April 2017, the NSPCC said.

Helen Westerman, from the NSPCC in Leeds, says the firms children rely on are failing them.

"By the age of 12, over 70% of young people will be on social media. But it's worrying bigger platforms like Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, they do have more resources and advanced moderation systems to tackle grooming, so that obviously isn't being done on those sites," she says.

The NSPCC says it wants new laws to force social media firms to do more to protect children.

Facebook and Instagram said they "aggressively fight" such content.
