The incident happened at about 03:30 yesterday morning in the Beauchief area of the city.

The victim, who had been asleep upstairs, was woken by the sound of something being smashed at the back of the house.

Moments later, a man entered her bedroom, turned on the light and told the woman to get out of bed before taking two rings from her fingers and causing damage to the house.

Det Sgt Jim Dyson said: "Although the victim of this awful incident wasn't injured, she is, understandably, hugely distressed.

"She managed to call 999 to report what had happened after the man had left her home and is now being supported by her family and our specially trained officers."

A 28-year-old man's been arrested in connection with the incident.

The men were arrested after two girls came forward to say they'd been abused when they lived in a children's home.

The girls were aged 14 when the men first began to use drink, drugs and violence to groom and sexually exploit them.

The nine were convicted of 22 offences, including rape and inciting child prostitution.

Ansar Ali, from Bradford-based Together Against Grooming, says: "We hear of cases where children are being thrown out of moving cars, of children being threatened with baseball bats, of children being given alcohol and narcotics.

"Children should not be subjected to that in our society. It's not something we should tolerate."

  5. Developers and council clash over road names in Whitbypublished at 13:06 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2019

A row's broken out between a town council and builders over the naming of two streets on the North Yorkshire coast.

Scarborough borough councillors will have to decide on the names for two new roads in Whitby after the town council and the developer couldn't reach agreement.

Two new streets are being created to house 38 dwellings on a site to the south and west of Sneaton Castle Farm, Castle Road, Whitby.

S Harrison Developments has suggested Castlefields Drive for the road currently known as Road 1.

But Whitby Town Council wants a road by any other name (to misquote Shakespeare) and wants Road 1 to be called Claremont Drive, after the name of the lodge which was on the site prior to the building of Sneaton Castle.

For what's known as Road 2, the developer wants it to be named Howe Close, as an old map of the site from 1895 shows a road of that name nearby.

It's also said it would be happy with Smugglers Close, due to the town's historic links with the illicit trade.

But the town council prefers Turnpike Close, as the area was known by that name in the past.

The council's planning committee will be asked to adjudicate when it meets next week.

  14. Watch: Sheffield hospital highlights impact of 'no-shows'published at 10:53 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2019

Sheffield Children's Hospital has started a campaign to try to reduce the number of appointment no-shows.

Last year, more than 21,000 children didn't turn up for an appointment which had been booked for them - that's 12% of all appointments being a no-show.

Hundreds of brightly coloured paper planes were thrown through the main entrance of the hospital to highlight how many appointments are missed every week.

Staff at the hospital hope that by showing the impact of people missing appointments, it'll encourage patients to show up instead:

The authority paid out £114,000 since 2015 on the Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards and Chairman's Awards (Reyta) - more than seven times the national average - according to the TaxPayers' Alliance.

  18. Solution sought over disputed Leeds sex zonepublished at 09:43 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2019

Police, councillors, campaigners and local residents are due to meet later to try to find a way forward in a long dispute over a "managed" red-light zone in Leeds.

    Sex workers protest

The area, in Holbeck, aims to protect sex workers from abuse, with supporters claiming women using it have felt "safer".

But some people living in the area say they've been plagued by anti-social behaviour since the zone was set up.

The zone, where sex workers are allowed to operate without fear of arrest, has faced opposition, with a series of public meetings being dominated by the issue.

Tonight's meeting is aimed at moving the debate along, by taking a slightly different approach.

It won't be run as an open forum, instead people will be divided into smaller groups to decide on some of the key issues they want to see resolved by the council.

Leeds City Council has pledged to independently review the managed zone later this year.

  20. TV director says teen sex chat was 'role-playing'published at 09:04 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2019

A court's heard how a former TV director from North Yorkshire thought he was role-playing with an adult during sexual chats with an officer posing as a 13-year-old girl.

    Leeds courtImage source, Stanley Walker/Geograph

Prosecutors allege Tim Dowd, who's 66, believed he was speaking to a teen named Chantelle.

But he told jurors at Leeds Crown Court he believed she was an adult woman looking to enjoy "younger girl-older man role-play".

Mr Dowd, of Chatsworth Grove, Harrogate, denies child sex offences.

The court heard Mr Dowd, who worked as a director on Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Heartbeat, asked the undercover officer intimate questions about "phone sex" and requested images of her breasts.

Jurors were told he contacted the girl via a chat site and asked to clarify her age before remarking that being 13 was "not a problem".

He told the court he would have left the chat immediately if he had been sent an image of a child.

The defendant said he does not have a sexual interest in children, adding that he has never had any complaints about his conduct during his time as a freelance director.

He denies three counts of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity, and a count of attempting to engage in sexual conversations with a child for the purpose of sexual gratification.

    The trial continues.
